Ruby's POV
Kate Karl stood in the doorway like she owned the world. Which, technically, she did. My ex-boyfriend's wife. Elias's sister. The woman who had everything I'd once dreamed of having.
Her cold eyes swept over me with obvious disdain. "Who are you supposed to be?"
"I'm Ruby. Ruby Ross," I managed to say, my voice barely steady.
She rolled her eyes impatiently. "I don't give a damn about your name. What are you doing in my house? Are you some new cleaning girl?"
Relief washed over me. She had no idea who I was. Stanley must have worked overtime to erase every trace of my existence from their perfect life.
Without warning, she tossed her expensive coat and designer purse directly at me like I was nothing more than a coat rack. The heavy fabric slammed into my chest hard enough to make me stumble backward.
"Something smells incredible in here. I'm absolutely starving!" she announced loudly, already marching toward the kitchen.
