Startled, Elara turned from her worn-out candle-lit notebook. Her heart thumped as her gaze dropped to the floor beneath the door lay a rolled parchment sealed with a black wax emblem she didn't recognize.
With trembling fingers, she picked it up.
"To the Midnight Heir," it read in elegant script.
Her chest tightened. Midnight Heir? She wasn't royalty. She wasn't even from a noble family. Just an orphan raised by a kind herbalist on the edge of the city.
Curiosity overcame fear. She broke the seal and opened it.
