Chapter 121 - Kael's Decent(1)-The Whispers Begin

The room was dark.

Kael sat on the edge of the bed, his hands clasped between his knees, his back bowed. The gas lamp on the nightstand had burned out hours ago, but he hadn't noticed. He hadn't noticed much of anything in the past weeks—not the chill in the air, not the growling of his stomach, not the way his clothes hung loose on his frame.

He had stopped eating. Stopped sleeping. Stopped speaking to anyone who wasn't a voice in his head.

The equation is unbalanced.

The whisper came from nowhere and everywhere—from the walls, from the ceiling, from the space behind his eyes. Kael had heard it for the first time weeks ago, faint and distant, like wind through a crack in the window. He had ignored it. He had told himself it was exhaustion, stress, the strain of the Audit's endless demands.

But the whisper had grown louder.

Find the anomaly. Erase the error. Balance the equation.

Kael looked up. The room was the same as it had always been—cheap boarding house, peeling wallpaper, a single window looking out onto the foggy street. But something was different. The shadows seemed deeper. The silence seemed heavier. The air itself seemed to press against him, as if it were trying to tell him something.

The anomaly is still alive.

The anomaly is in the capital.

The anomaly must be erased.

Kael stood. His legs were unsteady, his head throbbing. He hadn't eaten in days. He couldn't remember the last time he had slept. But he knew one thing with certainty: Leximus Cross was not dead.

The whispers had told him so.

He had been tracking the anomaly since Scarred Hills.

The Audit had declared Leximus dead. The files had been closed, the case marked resolved, the resources reallocated to other priorities. But Kael had known better. He had seen the body—or rather, he had seen where the body should have been. The reports said Leximus had been killed by Valerius's Logic-Lance, his body recovered and buried in an unmarked grave.

And the characteristic—the physical remnant that should have been left behind—had not manifested.

No characteristic means no death, Kael thought. No death means he's still out there.

The whispers are right.

He had petitioned the Audit for permission to investigate. Denied. He had requested resources to continue the hunt. Denied. He had asked for access to the sealed files on the Cross case. Denied, denied, denied.

The whispers had grown louder.

They're afraid, the whispers said. They don't understand. But you do. Find him. End him. Balance the equation.

Kael had left the Audit office one night and never gone back.

The capital was a maze of fog and gaslight, of narrow streets and narrower minds.

Kael moved through it like a ghost, his footsteps silent, his eyes scanning. He had been searching for weeks, following rumors, tracking whispers, piecing together the fragments of information that the Audit had tried to bury.

The anomaly is in the slums.

The anomaly is hiding in the Drown.

The anomaly is planning something.

The whispers guided him, step by step, street by street, alley by alley. They told him where to go, who to ask, what to look for. They never lied. They never led him astray.

The anomaly's sister is at the palace.

The anomaly will try to save her.

The Public Showing is the opportunity.

Kael had found a room in the Drown, a boarding house near the tannery district, where the fog was thick and the walls were thin. He had spread his evidence across the floor—newspaper clippings, Audit reports, photographs of the Cross family. In the center, a picture of Leximus, his eyes dark, his face hollow.

The anomaly, the whispers said. The error. The flaw.

Erase him.

Kael knelt among the papers, his hands trembling, his breath shallow.

"I will," he said. "I will erase him."

The days blurred together.

Kael stopped keeping track of time. He slept when his body demanded it, ate when his stomach reminded him, but the whispers were constant, a background hum that never faded.

The anomaly is a variable that does not fit.

The anomaly is a contradiction that must be resolved.

The anomaly is a flaw in the equation.

Kael nodded. He understood. The whispers had shown him the truth.

He stood and walked to the window. The fog was thick, the gaslights struggling. Somewhere out there, in the darkness, the anomaly was waiting.

The Public Showing is in three days.

The anomaly will be there.

You must be ready.

Kael touched the glass. It was cold, colder than it should have been. The cold spread from his fingertips to his palm, from his palm to his wrist, from his wrist to his arm.

I will be ready, he thought. I will balance the equation.

The whispers approved.
