Chapter 39 - 35) What is Magic to you?

...

{3rd POV}

After returning to the inn, Ember wasted no time settling into the comfort of his bed.

He leaned back against the wooden headboard and held the magic grimoire in both hands, staring at it with a mixture of anticipation, excitement, and a hint of nervousness.

This was something he had been preparing for mentally ever since he left Argon Town.

He exhaled slowly.

Even after awakening two magics of his own, there was still one empty slot waiting to be filled—a space he had deliberately reserved for something special.

Something that fit perfectly into the long-term plans he had been shaping for years.

There was no hesitation in his mind about what his third magic should be; he already knew the answer.

The only question was whether fate agreed with his choice.

Opening the grimoire carefully, he began reading the strange markings etched on the pages.

The letters glowed faintly as his eyes followed the lines, and before long, the world around him blurred.

His consciousness sank deeper and deeper until everything became weightless.

He found himself floating aimlessly in an endless white expanse, a place with no sky, no ground, no horizon—just infinite emptiness.

A calm yet resonant voice echoed in his mind, neither loud nor soft but impossible to ignore.

"It is up to you. The path you desire. What is your goal? What do you wish to achieve?"

The voice reverberated through the blank space.

In the next moment, the emptiness rippled like disturbed water.

A figure stepped forward from the shifting white mist—a perfect replica of Ember himself, mirroring his appearance down to the smallest detail.

Then the scenery shifted abruptly.

The white void dissolved, replaced by a vast open grassland stretching endlessly in every direction.

A gentle wind blew across the field, carrying the smell of earth and greenery.

The sky above was bright and clear.

His duplicate stood across from him with a contemplative expression.

"Alright," the other Ember said, folding his arms. "Let's start with something simple. What is magic to you?"

Ember blinked, then answered honestly.

"What is magic to me? It's… a miracle. A power that lets me bring the deepest parts of myself to the surface. A force that allows me to turn imagination into reality. To shape my desires into something tangible. A grimoire of infinite possibilities. A miracle book."

As soon as the words left his mouth, another figure walked into existence—another version of Ember.

This one looked slightly different, slightly older compared to his two selves.

Before he could question it, the scene changed again.

The grassland faded into a dense and overwhelming jungle of concrete—towering buildings, noisy roads, and chaotic street lights. A

cityscape identical to the one from his original world.

A lone figure sprinted past the three of them. He had black hair and brown eyes, identical to the Ember of his past life.

That Ember spoke, his voice tired yet grounded in truth.

"I achieved a lot—studied endlessly, became a so-called 'engineer,' earned a steady income, lived that typical routine… but none of it brought us what we truly wanted. There was no real happiness. No sense of fulfillment. No genuine love. Everything was measured by what others expected of us. A life planned by someone else, not by ourselves."

His expression softened slightly, a quiet frustration mixed with acceptance.

It was a reminder of everything Ember had left behind—and everything he refused to repeat in this new world.

"What I want is simple… an adventure," he finally admitted, and as those words left his mouth, the scenery around him shifted once again.

This time he found himself standing on top of a vast sandy hill, the wind blowing grains of sand across his feet.

All around him, countless weapons were embedded into the ground—spears, lances, swords, maces, and other armaments of every shape and style imaginable.

Each weapon seemed to radiate a faint aura, as if they carried the weight of forgotten battles and the memories of warriors long gone.

"I want this magic—" he began to declare, but he wasn't even close to being finished.

The scene abruptly changed again.

Now he stood on the highest point of a stone castle tower.

Down below, he could see a man gripping a staff, and the man slammed the staff against the ground, causing a massive burst of holy magic to erupt outward.

The explosion swept across the dead, barren land, purifying the filth and transforming the lifeless ground into thriving greenery right before his eyes.

The world came alive in seconds.

Ember pointed toward the scene without hesitation.

"I want this magic," he repeated, making his desire clear.

But the world didn't stay still.

It changed again—this time far more drastically.

Ember was standing on another tall tower, but the world around him was no longer normal.

It looked like reality had become a perfect mirror of itself, splitting straight down the middle.

Everything looked like a literal reflection, yet completely opposite.

Ember stared at the bizarre sight and said, "I want this magic as well—"

Before he could say more, his projection stepped in front of him.

"You're greedy," the first projection stated bluntly.

"You're wishing for something impossible," the second projection added, as if scolding him for even trying to reach so high.

"Do you really think you have even the slightest chance of acquiring magic of this scale?" the third projection asked, sounding more like a disappointed mentor than a copy of himself.

Ember simply smiled at them.

There was no hesitation or fear in his expression.

"As I said already, I want a grimoire of infinite possibilities—something not bound or restricted by any chains or limitations. That's what magic is to me. Magic is a miracle with no fixed ceiling, no predetermined boundaries. The only limit should be myself, nothing else."

The three projections exchanged glances before speaking in unison.

"I guess… that really is just who we are."

With those words, the three versions of him merged together, becoming a single unified presence before dissolving completely.

When Ember finally opened his eyes in the real world, the grimoire lay open in his hands—completely empty.

Every page was blank, as if waiting for him to carve out his future through his own effort.

He sighed deeply and exhaled, steadying himself.

He needed to update his status, but there was a problem: he was dozens of miles away from his goddess, far from Orario.

Thankfully, this was something he had already accounted for in advance.

He reached into the drawer beside his bed and pulled out a small vial filled with a shimmering golden liquid.

The contents gleamed faintly even in the dim lighting of the room.

He held it carefully, fully aware of its importance and the role it would play in his next step.

It was the very first magic item he had ever created, and to be completely honest with himself, he knew he had been unbelievably lucky with the results.

The entire thing worked far better than he expected, especially considering how improvised the idea originally was.

Back when he was still living in Shawn Village, the problem of updating his status had been one of the biggest and most annoying obstacles he faced.

He wasn't going to live anywhere near the Shawn Village after moving out to further nations, and seeing his goddess frequently simply wasn't realistic.

So he decided he would visit her once every six months for a proper status update.

It wasn't ideal, but it was the only option he had at the time.

The downside, of course, was that learning or acquiring new magic would be significantly slowed down because of these long gaps.

Driven by pure curiosity and frustration, he bought a Status Snitch.

After using it, he broke down and analyzed its internal principles, trying to understand how it functioned.

Once he grasped the basics, he attempted something borderline reckless: creating a status updater using a small amount of his goddess's blood as the core ingredient.

The attempt should not have succeeded—yet it did.

Or rather, he somehow lucked out hard enough that it worked.

After testing the prototype repeatedly, he identified several major limitations.

It was extremely restricted in its functionality, to the point where it only worked on him and absolutely no one else—not even other members of the same familia.

According to his goddess, the item counted as an unfinished product.

The only reason it could update his status at all was because her blood, combined with his own personal mystery, recorded the sequence of actions she performed whenever she updated his falna.

That was the sole reason the device functioned.

And that was it.

The item did not replicate her power, nor did it imitate her authority.

It simply replayed a recorded process—and because it was incomplete, it had brutal restrictions.

The most important limitation was that it worked exclusively on him.

In simple terms, the whole thing behaved like a computer program: the "hardware" being his personal mystery, and the "software" being the ritual used by his goddess to update a falna.

But to execute the process, the magic needed a specific receiver—him alone.

No one else's status could ever be affected by it.

However, there was another critical catch.

His status couldn't be locked.

If his goddess had locked it beforehand, the updater would fail completely.

The item didn't contain authority; it only recorded the act of updating, not the ability to bypass protections or change settings.

(A/N: Just a reminder—he was a software engineer in his previous life, which helped him understand some concepts. But he doesn't possess broader scientific knowledge, so don't expect him to suddenly build high-tech stuff. His software background only assists him in certain types of item creation, not in combat or general skills.)

Another problem came along with the item: because of how the falna worked, anyone capable of reading hieroglyphics would be able to see his entire status if he ever exposed his back.

That meant staying extremely careful.

Altena wasn't some isolated village; in this land, there were plenty of people with knowledge of divine texts.

He needed to make sure he never allowed his back to be visible in vulnerable situations.

With all that in mind, Ember quickly lay down on his bed and took out the vial containing the golden liquid.

He exhaled once, steadying his nerves, then let a drop fall directly onto his back.

The hieroglyphics carved into his skin began to glow faintly the moment the liquid touched them.

Gradually, the brightness increased as the updating process began.

The sensation wasn't painful, but it was warm, precise, and impossible to ignore.

He waited patiently until the glow faded.

Once the process finished, he grabbed a clean sheet of paper, pressed it firmly against his back, and copied his updated status onto the page.

It was a simple but necessary step—one he had repeated multiple times already.

Magic Grimoire: A magic that allows the user to copy and store any spell he witnesses being cast, effectively giving him the ability to learn and reproduce it later.

His previously empty third magic slot had now been finally filled, and the new magic was none other than the Magic Grimoire.

As he carefully read through the description, his eyes lit up with anticipation.

This magic was exactly what he had hoped for—it wasn't like the standard magic system in this world that merely allowed three spells; instead acting as one huge magic spell, it actively recorded and allowed the user to replicate any magic he had seen.

The possibilities were enormous.

With this new ability, his potential to grow in magical power skyrocketed.

Ember couldn't help but feel a surge of excitement and determination.

Testing this magic would be the first step, but more importantly, it perfectly aligned with the plan he had carefully devised for Altena.

With the Magic Grimoire in his possession, enhancing his magical prowess and achieving the level of versatility he desired was finally within reach.

The moment he finished reading the description, he couldn't wait to experiment with the new magic.

A wide grin spread across his face as he thought of the countless spells he could acquire, practice, and master.

This was the next stage of his journey, and with the Magic Grimoire, Ember was certain that his adventures in Altena were about to reach a whole new level.

...

On the day after that, Ember went ahead and purchased a property for 2 million valis.

Finally, he had a place to call his own in Altena.

It wasn't extravagant or luxurious by any means, but it perfectly suited his needs.

The house was a three-story wooden structure, simple yet functional, with two rooms on each floor.

That was more than enough space for him to live comfortably, store his belongings, and even accommodate any future needs.

He spent the remainder of the day arranging furniture, tidying up, and setting the place to his liking, making it feel more like home than just a building.

The following day, it was finally time for Ember to begin adventuring seriously.

He had already spoken to the Guild receptionist about introducing him to a suitable adventuring party.

Thankfully, when he arrived at the Guild, she was waiting with a prepared party for him.

"Sir Tithonus, here is a party that has expressed interest in accepting you," she said, gesturing toward the group.

Ember turned to inspect the members, noting immediately that all of them were Elves, which he found interesting.

"Nice to meet you. I am Lance, from Wishe Forest," said an Elf woman with striking yellow hair and matching amber-yellow eyes.

She was dressed in a female Knight's armor that, while protective, exposed her thighs, though metal kneecaps were strapped over her joints for safety.

She extended her hand confidently for a handshake.

Ember met her gesture and grasped her hand firmly.

"I am Tithonus Ber, from Alf's Royal Forest. I am a Magic Swordsman," he replied, giving her a polite but strong handshake.

"What a coincidence! I am a Magic Swordsman as well," she said with a bright grin.

Ember raised a brow on that, 'Her name is Lance, she uses a Spear and calls herself a MagicSwordsman when she is a woman?' Of course he decided to keep his opinion to himself, not speaking about it aloud.

She then turned toward the rest of her party members, gesturing to each in turn.

"Let me introduce you to the rest of the party. The Elf with purple hair is Jasmine, our healer. The grey-haired lad over there is Ash, our Archer. The black-haired Elf standing beside him is our Mage, Aurielle. And finally, the one covered entirely in armor is Jack, our Tank—and he's also a weretiger."

"It's a pleasure to meet all of you," Ember said respectfully, glancing at each member of the party.

He immediately noticed how well-organized and balanced their group was.

Indeed, a party of three adventurers was considered sufficient for most standard missions, though occasionally one could find a party of four.

Any group larger than four, however, was considered exceptionally rare.

"So," Lance asked, turning her gaze toward him, "you are looking for a party to team up with, right? That's why you're here at the Guild today?"

"Yes, I am new here in Altena, and I belong to another familia," Ember said politely, bowing his head slightly.

Lance smirked, patting him firmly on the back.

"Enough of this politeness. Come on, let's head outside and show me what you can do. If you pass my test, then we'll take you in," she said, her voice carrying a natural authority of a party leader.

Ember quickly thanked the receptionist and followed the group outside, anticipation building with each step.

Once they were out of the city, Lance turned toward the others.

"Jack, test him," she commanded.

Jack stepped forward, his imposing figure casting a long shadow on the ground.

He smirked, a glint of excitement in his eyes.

"Gladly, Boss," he said, drawing his massive sword from its sheath.

The weapon was intimidating, its edge reflecting the sunlight in a way that could unnerve even a confident adventurer.

"Since you are a Magic Swordsman, you should be able to handle Jack, right?" Lance said with a smirk, her words carrying a subtle warning.

Ember understood the implication—if he had lied about his abilities, Jack would make him regret it, and likely with more force than he expected.

Ember calmly drew his own sword, its polished blade glinting in the sunlight.

Lance whistled softly and said, "A nice sword, but remember, a powerful weapon doesn't automatically make you a strong adventurer."

Both Ember and Jack stepped back, creating distance between them, and assumed battle stances.

Lance glanced toward Jasmine and nodded.

"Jasmine, do the honor."

The healer Elf nodded seriously, then raised her voice clearly, "Three, two, one, go!"

At the moment she said "Go," Jack charged forward.

He swung his enormous sword with a wide, brutal arc that looked as if it were meant to cleave Ember clean in two.

However, the attack was deliberate, restrained just enough to gauge Ember's reaction rather than truly overwhelm him.

Ember responded by deflecting the attack with a precise movement of his own sword.

Jack did not appear surprised at all—the strength he had put into that swing was calculated to test a Level 2 adventurer like Ember.

The Weretiger followed immediately with another swing, faster this time, and Ember met it with a matching slash.

When their swords collided, a small shockwave erupted from the impact, blowing a gust of wind outward and rustling the nearby grass.

For a brief moment, Jack's eyes widened slightly, registering Ember's skill.

He was a Weretiger, a race renowned for their combination of immense Strength, impressive Endurance, and remarkable Agility.

Jack's raw strength may not have exceeded Lance's, but it was still formidable, and his Endurance was unmatched in this group.

Even his Agility was exceptional, allowing him to react quickly and adapt to Ember's moves.

Despite Jack's considerable strength behind each strike, Ember met him blow for blow, retaliating with equal force.

For an Elf, a race not particularly known for raw physical power, his ability to match a Weretiger in combat was impressive.

"Woah, his strength is certainly not bad," Aurielle remarked, her eyes narrowing slightly as she observed Ember's precision and control.

Jasmine, the party's healer, nodded in agreement and added, "His speed is also superior to Jack's. He reacts faster than I expected, even against someone with such raw power."

Ash, the grey-haired Archer, crossed his arms and commented thoughtfully, "Well, he is an Elf, after all. Our race tends to excel in agility, dexterity, and magical affinity, so this isn't entirely surprising. But still, his control is remarkable."

The rest of the party continued to watch the duel intently.

Ember shifted his focus, dodging Jack's far more powerful swings and deflecting the others with precise strikes.

Gradually, he began forcing Jack backward, gaining control of the engagement without overextending himself.

Lance, standing nearby, grinned subtly.

She had already mentally half-approved Ember as a competent fighter.

After all, Jack's ability in frontal combat was second only to hers.

Only she could truly push Jack back in a one-on-one duel, and Ember's performance indicated that he was at least capable of holding his own.

Now, all that remained was to witness Ember's mastery of magic.

Normally, Lance would have ended the demonstration here, allowing him to show only his combat skill.

However, Ember had proudly stated that he was a Magic Swordsman, a title that required mastery of certain essential techniques.

Every Magic Swordsman knew that without one particular skill, they could not even claim the title.

That skill was Concurrent Chanting, the ability to simultaneously wield sword and spell in battle with precision.

Meanwhile, Ember remained fully focused on the fight, completely unaware of Lance's thoughts about his potential.

He analyzed Jack carefully, noting the raw strength in each swing.

He calculated in his mind, 'He is strong. His strength parameter must have been fairly high even before his last level-up.'

Then, comparing himself, he concluded, 'However, he is weaker than me.'

It was not an exaggeration.

If he wanted, he could go toe-to-toe against Jack despite the Weretiger wielding a massive greatsword.

Yet, Ember restrained himself.

He was not just an Elf; he was a newly minted Level 2 adventurer, and Jack was likely approaching the upper limit of his own strength parameters for his current level.

Jack was probably a mid- to late-Level 2, and being a Weretiger gave him natural boosts to strength, endurance, and agility.

It would make no sense to overcommit and try to overwhelm Jack completely.

Ember's goal was not to crush the party member but to demonstrate his competence.

He wanted to show that he could handle himself in combat, that he was capable and skilled, without appearing monstrous or beyond reason and exposing that something is wrong with him.

"End the fight!" Lance shouted, and both combatants immediately ceased their movements.

She clapped her hands once, her eyes glinting with amusement, and said, "You fought well, Jack, and you as well, Mr. Tithonus. Though… your name is quite a mouthful. How about we come up with a shorter pseudonym? Hmm… Tits. How about I call you Tits?"

Her smirk drew an immediate glare from Jasmine.

"Captain! Don't make fun of him!" the healer scolded, her voice filled with frustration and concern.

Lance merely shrugged, unfazed by the admonishment.

"What? It's just a nickname!" she replied, still smirking.

Ember's eyebrows twitched in irritation at the ridiculous nickname she had just tried to impose.

'Aurora's sake, she can't be serious… I'm not some—' he thought angrily, before quickly speaking up, cutting her off.

"Call me Tet. My friends use to call me that."

Aurielle, observing the exchange, nodded thoughtfully.

"Tet… yes, that suits him," she said calmly, her purple eyes softening slightly as she accepted the new name.

Lance, seemingly unfazed by Ember's correction, stepped forward with renewed energy.

"So now, Tet," she said, her tone playful yet serious, "you told me you are a Magic Swordsman, correct?"

"Yes," he replied simply, his expression neutral, yet his grip on his sword firm.

A grin spread across Lance's face, sharp and confident.

"Good. Then let's have a proper match between us. Don't misunderstand me—I need to verify your words. Knowing basic swordsmanship and magic doesn't automatically make you a Magic Swordsman. I need to test your abilities for myself."

With that, she reached behind her back and drew a long spear, the tip gleaming in the sunlight.

She leveled it at him, her stance radiating strength and precision.

She was clearly a far more formidable opponent than Jack, not just in skill, but in sheer aura and combat readiness.

Jack stepped aside, patting Ember lightly on the back.

"Good luck surviving her attacks," he said with a grin, clearly impressed by both Ember's potential and Lance's skill.

Ember took a moment to size her up, noting the fluidity of her movements and the calculated poise in her stance.

Pulling the spear back slightly, she assumed a striking pose that combined both offense and defense perfectly.

'I guess a spear really suits her style, even if it isn't a full lance,' he mused quietly to himself, a hint of amusement in his mind.

With a calm breath, he assumed a defensive stance of his own, readying himself for the upcoming clash.

Jasmine's voice rang out sharply, "Three, two, one! Start!"

Immediately, Lance lunged forward, thrusting the spear with the intent to pierce through his defenses.

Ember reacted with speed and precision, deflecting the initial strike effortlessly.

Before he could even recover, she swung the spear in a wide arc, attempting to slash him from the side.

Ember responded instinctively, bringing his sword up and colliding with her attack head-on.

The force of their weapons meeting created a burst of sparks that danced through the air, accompanied by the sharp clang of metal against metal.

"Not bad, but it's about time I get serious," Lance said, her expression shifting from amused to focused.

Without wasting a second, she began chanting loudly and confidently, "O Apostle of Storm, Lance of Thunder! Respond to my call!"

The moment Ember heard her chant begin, he immediately started his own, all while deflecting her thrusts with precise movements.

"O Flames of Legends! Burn brighter than thy enemy! Reduce them to cinders!" he chanted, weaving through her rapid stabs with controlled footwork, dodging some and redirecting others with calm efficiency.

Lance continued, her voice rising with intensity, "I pray to the Great Father of Gods, Zeus—bestow your thunder upon this child! Let it pierce my foe like a divine Vajra—"

Ember did not slow down.

"Let their ashes be swallowed by your blue flames!" he countered, finishing his chant just as she reached the end of hers.

"Thunder Bolt!"

"Cremation!"

Thunder erupted around the tip of Lance's spear, crackling violently as a concentrated bolt manifested and shot forward.

Ember pulled out his short staff in one fluid motion, and brilliant blue flames surged from the tip like a blazing wave.

The two magical attacks launched simultaneously, streaking toward one another at frightening speed.

The collision created an explosion powerful enough to be compared to several TNT bundles detonating at once.

The shockwave blasted outward, forcing both Ember and Lance to be thrown back dozens of meters.

The rest of the party shielded their faces from the intense burst of heat and sound—everyone except Jack, who simply braced himself with crossed arms.

"The… what the hell—His magic was that strong?" Aurielle shouted, her eyes wide and her voice half-shocked, half-impressed.

Jasmine nodded stiffly, equally stunned.

"It's insane. That output… that wasn't normal at all."

Ash stared at the battlefield with disbelief plastered over his face.

The ground between Ember and Lance had been cratered, sunken several meters deep and completely scorched black as if a giant furnace had burned through it.

"Hahaha! That was freaking fantastic!" Lance roared with laughter, completely ignoring the soot on her armor and the burn marks on her gloves. "

Despite having such a short chant, your magic packs a ridiculous punch!"

Ember let out a small chuckle at her enthusiastic reaction.

If only she knew the truth.

The spell he unleashed was actually below his usual output—far below.

His normal full-power blasts were easily comparable to what a solid Level 3 could unleash, and his heavier spells were strong enough to injure Level 4s and potentially even threaten Level 5s if they were unprepared.

A real attack of his would have turned Lance into charcoal, and that was the last thing he wanted.

Killing his potential captain on day one would destroy his entire future here.

"Tet! Welcome to our Thunder Lance Party!" Lance declared boldly, puffing her chest out proudly as if she owned the place—because technically, she did.

She practically proclaimed the party name after herself without an ounce of shame or hesitation.

Ember grabbed her extended hand and shook it firmly.

The two shared a laugh, loud and hearty, while the others stared at them as if they were a pair of deranged monsters who found explosions fun.

Ember laughed even louder than Lance, but only because of the thought running through his mind: 'I have copied her magic.'

His grin widened just slightly at the secret victory.
