Elena worked through the night trying to find a way to remove my curse without killing me.
"There has to be something," she muttered, surrounded by ancient texts and magical theory books. "Some precedent. Some technique nobody's tried."
"If there was, you'd have found it already. Accept that this is impossible."
"I don't accept impossible. Impossible is just difficult we haven't figured out yet."
"That's optimistic. Also probably wrong."
"Probably. But I'm trying anyway."
Kael sat with our children, explaining what might happen. Trying to prepare them for potentially losing their mother.
"Mama might have to go away for a while. Maybe forever. Because there's a problem only Mama can fix and fixing it might hurt her."
"Why does Mama always have to fix things?" Arianna asked, her young voice confused. "Why can't someone else fix them?"
"Because Mama is the one who created this particular problem. So Mama feels responsible for fixing it."
