"Mama! Mama, look what I can do!"
Arianna's excited voice pulled me from the reports I was reviewing. I looked up to see her floating three feet off the ground, suspended by her own shade.
"That's very impressive, sweetheart. But maybe practice that outside where you won't hit your head on the ceiling?"
"But inside is more fun! There's more things to bump into!"
"That's exactly why you should practice outside."
She floated down reluctantly, her shade dissipating as her feet touched the floor. At thirteen months old, she had more control over her curse than most adult bearers. It was impressive and also deeply concerning.
"Elena says I'm progressing faster than expected. Says I'm going to be very powerful when I grow up."
"Elena talks to you about your power too much. You're still a baby."
"I'm not a baby! I'm thirteen months! That's practically grown up!"
"You're definitely not grown up. You're still learning to use a spoon correctly."
"Spoons are hard. My shade is easy."
