The air in the mountain pass curdled beneath the pressure radiating from the three-meter-tall nightmare of bone and shadow. Its presence did not simply intimidate those around it; it seemed to distort the world itself. The pale light of dawn bent around its massive frame, staining the snow-covered cliffs and drifting mist in a bruised, sickly violet.
A wet crunch echoed through the pass as the last elemental mage disappeared between rows of black, razor-like teeth. The instant the mage died, the spell-chains wrapped around Rayn shattered one after another like brittle glass. Their glowing fragments dissolved into the freezing air, the magic binding him vanishing alongside the men who had cast it.
Rayn dropped heavily onto one knee, his boot sinking into steaming mud. Every breath stabbed through his fractured ribs, and dried blood covered half his face, yet his eyes remained frighteningly clear. White light burned inside his pupils as he slowly raised his head toward the creature standing over him.
The monster stared back with a single enormous violet eye. Its faceless skull held a grin so unnaturally wide that the obsidian tendons at the corners of its mouth tore apart before silently knitting themselves together again. For several long seconds, neither of them moved. Master and monster simply stared at one another as the battlefield settled into an eerie silence.
Then Rayn frowned.
"...Wait."
The creature tilted its head slightly.
Rayn rubbed the bruised skin around his throat and looked the monster up and down. "I thought you were a girl. At mountain, you appeared as an eight-year-old boy. During the Ashburg election, you looked like some crawling nightmare made entirely of teeth and darkness. Now you're..." He gestured vaguely toward its towering body. "Whatever the hell this is."
A cold voice suddenly reverberated through Rayn's consciousness. It did not enter through his ears. Instead, it seemed to emerge from somewhere deep inside his mind, ancient and hollow, like tombstones grinding beneath the earth.
I never claimed to be a girl, Rayn. Nor did I ever claim to be a boy. But because your mortal intellect appears desperate to categorize my existence, yes—the vessel you encountered at the mountain was male.
Rayn blinked once, momentarily more surprised by the voice than by the answer itself. "You can talk inside my head?"
Obviously.
That single word somehow irritated him more than it should have.
"How?"
The creature's enormous grin widened. Our meridians were forged from the same furnace. My core was birthed from your tribute and anchored within your Origin Core. Your dantian is my seat, and your spiritual network is my conduit. Why would I degrade myself by relying upon mortal vocal cords?
Rayn exhaled through his nose and forced himself back onto his feet. Bones cracked in his chest, sending another wave of pain through his body, but he ignored it. "Fair enough. But I've already seen several forms of yours. Back during the Ashburg election, you looked like a starving pile of teeth and darkness."
Because that was exactly what I was, the Gambler's Heart replied, sounding almost offended. A starving vestige. A spark without flesh. A parasite without an anchor. But five hundred corpses have fed me. Seventy gallons of warm vitality have strengthened my foundation. And you have granted me residence within an Origin Core worthy of my existence.
Black mist crawled lazily between its claws as Rayn studied the creature with renewed interest.
"So this is your true form?"
The Gambler's Heart became still.
No.
The single word made the mountain air feel noticeably colder.
This is merely one physical facet.
Rayn narrowed his eyes. Even while exhausted, wounded, and surrounded by enemies, his mind continued working. He catalogued every statement, every movement, every hint the creature unintentionally revealed. "Then what were you before this? An ancient cultivator? A fallen god? A demon? Or were you always some cosmic parasite that crawled out of whatever pit created you?"
For the first time, the Gambler's Heart seemed to hesitate. Its massive jaw began to open, but before it could answer, a violent whistle cut through the air.
Rayn's head snapped toward the mountainside.
A massive iron-tipped ballista bolt tore through the mist, flying directly toward the Gambler's Heart's temple. Rayn moved before thought could become conscious action. Conqueror Gnosis flooded through his arm as his hand blurred outward.
CLANG!
The bolt shattered in midair.
Twisted pieces of iron spun across the rocks and disappeared down the mountainside. The Gambler's Heart looked at the fragments for a moment before returning its attention to Rayn.
Curiosity is admirable, Conqueror, but questions yield no victory upon a slaughterhouse floor. Survive this mountain first. Once these dogs have been gutted, you may dissect my history to your heart's content.
Another distant ballista mechanism groaned somewhere below.
Rayn summoned his azure lightning blade. Electricity cracked along its sharpened edge, illuminating the blood staining his hands. "Then tell me something useful. What can you actually do in this form?"
The creature's violet eye gleamed with amusement. Do not probe too deeply into the house's secrets. Direct the table. Choose the prey. Raise the stakes. And when death finally places its hand upon your shoulder... call me.
Behind them, an emerald light suddenly chimed.
The protective barrier surrounding the frozen pine tree dissolved, scattering glowing particles into the air. Ten minutes had passed.
Vespera emerged first, her black hair damp with sweat and frost. Her porcelain armor had been hastily cleaned, though soot still blackened several sections near her shoulders. Magnus followed behind her, still maintaining Peter's appearance, while Victus and Freddy stepped out moments later.
Their injuries had not completely disappeared, but their meridians had stabilized. Broken bones had fused, bleeding had stopped, and each of them gripped their weapons with renewed strength.
Then Vespera saw the creature standing beside Rayn.
She froze.
Her spatial senses exploded outward as silver fractures opened around both of her hands. "Rayn! Move!"
A spatial blade formed beside her instantly.
"Is that another underworld construct?!"
"Stand down," Rayn said, raising one blood-covered hand.
Vespera stopped, though barely. Her golden eyes never left the monstrous figure looming beside him.
"He's with us."
Victus stepped forward, saw the creature clearly, and immediately stopped. The color drained from his battle-scarred face as his gaze locked onto the eye-covered shortsword embedded along the monster's side.
"...No."
Rayn glanced toward him.
Victus swallowed hard. "That thing... that nightmare was inside my chest?"
"It tried to be."
Victus slowly looked up at the Gambler's Heart.
The creature looked back.
Its enormous grin widened.
Victus instinctively took a step behind Magnus. "I don't like the way it's looking at me."
I remember your flavor.
Victus went completely pale.
Rayn rubbed his forehead. "Stop traumatizing my men."
The Gambler's Heart's massive shoulders moved in what looked suspiciously like a shrug. He asked.
Despite the situation, Freddy released a short laugh. Even Vespera's expression twitched slightly, and for one brief moment the suffocating atmosphere surrounding them loosened.
Then Rayn's expression changed.
The humor vanished.
"We have a problem."
Everyone focused on him immediately.
"Our scouts were wrong."
Rayn stepped toward the edge of the mountain pass and pointed into the valley below. The thinning clouds revealed a massive basin filled with movement. Campfires burned between rows of tents. Mercenary banners snapped in the wind. Siege engines stood among thousands of soldiers, cultivators, underworld troops, and armed auxiliaries.
The valley looked less like an army camp and more like an ocean of steel.
"There aren't six thousand soldiers down there," Rayn said. "There are more than ten thousand."
Silence followed.
Victus looked toward the army, then toward their own small group. Five wounded cultivators and one eldritch monstrosity stood against a force capable of swallowing entire villages.
"We can't fight that many head-on."
"We could kill thousands," Vespera said calmly, "but not without exhausting ourselves."
"And once our Gnosis reserves collapse," Magnus added, "their numerical advantage becomes absolute."
Freddy tightened his grip on his weapon. "They drown us in bodies."
Rayn nodded once. "Exactly."
The mountain wind howled through the pass while Victus studied him carefully. "So what's the play?"
Rayn stared into the valley.
Ten thousand soldiers.
Packed formations.
Narrow terrain.
Limited exits.
Siege weapons.
Gold.
Artifacts.
Fear.
His crimson irises slowly brightened.
Then he smiled.
"We don't fight ten thousand people."
Magnus immediately recognized the expression on Rayn's face and narrowed his eyes.
Rayn turned back toward the others. "We make ten thousand people afraid of fighting six."
Vespera raised an eyebrow. "And how exactly are we doing that?"
Rayn's gaze moved from Vespera to Freddy, then Magnus, Victus, and finally the Gambler's Heart. Each possessed a different Dao. Each held authority over different aspects of reality. Separately, they were dangerous. Together, Rayn could already see the machinery taking shape.
"We turn their numbers against them," he said. "Listen carefully."
The plan took less than a minute to explain.
When Rayn finished speaking, nobody responded immediately. Freddy simply stared at him. Victus looked visibly disturbed by what he had just heard. Vespera's expression remained unreadable, while Magnus slowly adjusted his gloves as if preparing for routine business.
The Gambler's Heart, however, laughed inside Rayn's mind.
Now I understand why you were chosen.
Rayn walked toward the cliff edge.
"Positions."
Everyone moved without hesitation.
Rayn looked down once more at the enormous army beneath them. Thousands of soldiers moved through the valley without realizing that death was already standing above their heads.
"Execute."
Six figures stepped off the mountain.
They plunged through the cloud layer as wind screamed around them. Soldiers below began shouting when dark silhouettes suddenly appeared overhead, but the warning came far too late.
BOOOOOOM!
The earth exploded beneath their landing.
Mud, stone, snow, and broken weapons erupted through the basin as the front ranks of the mercenary army were thrown backward. Rayn rose from the center of the crater first, followed by Magnus, Vespera, Victus, and Freddy.
Then the Gambler's Heart unfolded from the dust.
Three meters of bone, shadow, teeth, and violet light towered over the battlefield.
The reaction was immediate.
"What is that?!"
"DEMON!"
"BACK!"
The front ranks collapsed into chaos. Soldiers shoved one another while trying to escape. Several stumbled beneath the boots of their own allies. Others dropped shields and weapons completely as the Gambler's Heart took a single step forward.
Hundreds moved backward.
Rayn calmly raised two fingers.
"Vespera."
She was already moving.
"The Cage."
Vespera slammed both palms into the earth as golden light ignited within her eyes. Every stabilized meridian in her body opened simultaneously, releasing a violent wave of spatial authority.
Spatial Dao: Sovereign's Quarantine.
A silver wall erupted from the ground.
It climbed fifty feet, then one hundred, continuing upward as it curved over a dense portion of the enemy formation. Soldiers immediately ran toward the edges, but the barrier expanded faster than they could move.
With a deafening boom, the spatial walls connected.
A dome formed around exactly two thousand enemy soldiers.
The remaining eight thousand stood outside.
Inside the barrier, panic spread instantly. Mercenaries smashed swords, axes, cultivation techniques, and even their own bodies against the silver walls, but nothing escaped. Steel cracked. Techniques dispersed. Men screamed.
Rayn calmly turned toward Freddy.
"The Mirror."
Freddy grinned despite the blood running down his temple and pulled a small bronze artifact from beneath his breastplate.
The Chandler Mirror.
He poured fire Gnosis into its frame until the artifact began glowing like molten bronze. Its polished surface reflected a rack of discarded steel blades lying nearby.
Freddy twisted his wrist.
Prismatic Refraction.
Light fractured across the battlefield. One sword became two. Two became four. Four became ten. Then twenty. Fifty.
Finally, one hundred razor-edged mirrored blades hovered above the trapped soldiers.
The Gambler's Heart stepped forward.
Its ribcage slowly separated, not like flesh tearing apart but like a doorway opening into something that should never have existed. Black miasma poured from within its body and divided into dozens of serpentine strands.
The darkness wrapped itself around each floating weapon. Purple veins crawled across their surfaces until every blade trembled with unnatural hunger.
Rayn walked beneath the hovering armory.
His aura changed.
The pressure inside the dome increased so violently that several soldiers collapsed onto their knees.
Crimson Gnosis climbed from Rayn's body and flowed upward into the swords. It coated their edges, invaded their cores, and altered the very laws governing their movement.
Ninth Tier Conqueror's Dao.
A normal blade lost momentum when it struck armor. A normal blade slowed when it met bone. A normal weapon eventually stopped when resistance exceeded the force pushing it forward.
Rayn rejected that law.
His will imposed another.
Kinetic Continuity.
As long as the Conqueror commanded the weapons forward, the blades would not slow.
Magnus stepped beside him, still wearing Peter's face, still hidden behind another man's identity. Yet nothing about the aura surrounding him felt ordinary.
Phase Five.
Merchant's Dao.
Magnus calmly looked across the trapped soldiers. His attention moved over their armor, necklaces, coins, decorative plating, and every fragment of wealth they carried into battle.
"The mistake people make," Magnus said, slowly bringing his palms together, "is thinking gold is solid."
His fingers touched.
The earth trembled.
"Gold is capital."
Coins liquefied inside soldiers' pouches. Golden decorations melted from armor. Precious ornaments collapsed into glowing streams while mineral veins beneath the battlefield began to dissolve.
"And capital exists to be moved."
Magnus closed his hand.
Liquidation.
Molten gold erupted across the battlefield.
The trapped soldiers screamed as streams of white-hot metal wrapped around their boots and greaves. Before they could react, the gold flash-cooled and hardened.
Two thousand soldiers were anchored to the ground.
Some tried lifting their feet. Others hacked desperately at the gold binding them in place. Several attempted to raise their shields, but the packed formation left little room to maneuver.
They could not run.
They could not reposition.
They could barely defend themselves.
Exactly as Rayn intended.
He slowly lowered his hand.
"Reap."
The sky screamed.
One hundred blades vanished from sight.
A fraction of a second later, blood erupted across the dome.
The first line of soldiers collapsed before most of them even understood what had happened. The blades tore through steel breastplates, flesh, ribs, and spines without losing momentum.
Then they reached the second rank.
And the third.
And the fourth.
Every time the weapons should have slowed, Rayn's Dao forced them onward. Every wound they created fed the parasitic enchantment placed upon them by the Gambler's Heart. Blood disappeared from bodies almost as quickly as it was spilled, vitality consumed by the corrupted steel.
Outside the dome, eight thousand soldiers watched in stunned horror.
There was no glorious battle.
No exchange of techniques.
No heroic last stand.
Only execution.
The sound of steel filled the barrier for twenty heartbeats.
Then the blades stopped.
Silence swallowed the battlefield.
Vespera released her technique, and the enormous silver dome dissolved into drifting particles.
The surviving army finally saw what remained inside.
Two thousand bodies covered the ground.
One hundred blood-coated swords hovered above them.
Five cultivators stood among the dead.
And beside them stood one smiling monster.
Nobody moved.
A single sword slipped from someone's fingers.
CLANG.
The sound echoed across the valley.
Another soldier dropped his weapon.
Then another.
Fear spread through the army faster than any cultivation technique could have managed.
An officer shoved through the terrified ranks, his face completely drained of color. "RETREAT!"
Nobody reacted.
His voice rose into a scream.
"THEY'RE DEMONS! SPREAD OUT! RUN!"
The army broke.
Thousands abandoned formation simultaneously. Mercenary banners crashed into the mud. Soldiers shoved one another aside. Cultivators fled toward separate mountain paths while officers completely lost control of their units.
Within seconds, an organized army became a stampede.
Rayn watched them scatter.
Exactly according to plan.
He turned around.
"Victus."
Victus was already holding the artifact Peter(Magnus) had given him earlier.
An antique bronze scale rested between his hands. It was small, soot-covered, and ancient enough that even looking at it seemed to make the surrounding air feel heavier.
Victus stared at the thousands of fleeing soldiers before looking toward the mountain of corpses behind Rayn.
His hands trembled slightly.
"You're absolutely certain this will work?"
"No."
Victus stared at him.
Rayn smiled faintly. "That's why it's called gambling."
The Gambler's Heart laughed inside Rayn's mind.
Victus cursed quietly before slamming the bronze artifact onto the ground.
The scale expanded.
Ancient symbols ignited across its surface.
Victus was only a Phase Six cultivator. Under ordinary circumstances, he possessed no authority capable of manipulating an entire battlefield. However, the artifact did not function according to conventional spatial law.
It obeyed something older.
Something more dangerous.
The Esoteric Wager.
Every transaction required value. Every exchange demanded balance. Every gamble required collateral.
Victus bit down on his tongue until blood filled his mouth, then spat directly onto the bronze scale.
The artifact awakened.
CLICK.
One side of the scale lowered.
Victus pointed toward the corpses covering the battlefield. "I stake two thousand freshly harvested vessels! They possess equal battlefield origin!"
The scale trembled violently.
Victus immediately pointed toward the fleeing army.
"In exchange, the house demands one thousand living combatants beneath the Seventh Phase!"
Blood began running from his nose.
"Equivalent spiritual weight!"
The ancient symbols burned brighter.
The scale shifted.
For one horrible second, nothing happened.
Victus's expression changed.
"Rayn..."
Then—
CLICK.
The balance settled.
Rayn smiled.
The universe had accepted the wager.
SNAP.
Reality folded.
Two thousand corpses vanished from the battlefield. A fraction of a second later, they reappeared across the escape routes farther down the mountain.
Bodies crashed into the paths ahead of the retreating army.
Running soldiers tripped over the sudden wall of dead flesh. Dozens fell instantly. Those behind them slammed into the fallen. Within moments, hundreds were tumbling over one another as several escape routes became clogged with corpses.
But that was only half of the exchange.
Crimson spatial distortion erupted around Rayn.
Soldiers hundreds of meters away suddenly disappeared mid-stride.
One.
Ten.
Fifty.
Hundreds.
Space cracked repeatedly across the valley.
SNAP!
SNAP!
SNAP!
Men were violently dragged backward through the void. Exactly one thousand fleeing soldiers vanished from the retreating army and reappeared inside the blood-soaked clearing.
Some landed upright.
Others crashed into the mud.
Several dropped their weapons the instant they realized where they were.
All of them slowly looked around.
Five cultivators.
One hundred corrupted swords.
And behind them stood the Gambler's Heart.
Its enormous grin widened.
Victus suddenly collapsed onto one knee.
"GAH!"
Black blood poured from his mouth as metaphysical recoil tore through his meridians and rattled his organs. Magnus quickly caught his shoulder before he fell completely.
Victus struggled for several breaths before forcing out the words.
"The trade... is complete."
The one thousand soldiers finally understood where they had been brought.
One man began laughing uncontrollably—not because anything was funny, but because his mind had broken under the terror.
Another dropped his weapon and started praying.
Several backed away.
Others raised trembling swords and shields.
Then Rayn began walking toward them.
His azure lightning blade dragged across the blood-soaked ground, producing a harsh metallic scrape as electricity crawled along its edge.
His eyes burned white.
Behind him stood the Gambler's Heart.
Above him floated one hundred corrupted blades.
Beyond the battlefield, thousands of surviving soldiers continued fleeing down the mountain.
Rayn stopped in front of the trapped men and slowly raised his sword.
"Your wager has been accepted."
Nobody moved.
His expression turned completely cold.
"Your stakes have been called."
The Gambler's Heart laughed inside his consciousness.
Rayn pointed the blade toward the trembling army.
"Welcome to the table."
