Chapter 47 - Long Forgotten

The trail uncovered on Tatooine had led farther than any of the Jedi expected.

A forgotten set of coordinates...

A world absent from modern star charts...

And a darkness so profound that even the Force seemed to recoil from it.

Now...

Five Jedi walked where few, if any, had tread for generations.

Whatever waited within this ancient forest...

Might answer questions long buried by time.

Or awaken truths better left forgotten.

______________________________________________________________

The dense forest swallowed nearly all light.

Even during the day, only scattered rays pierced the thick canopy overhead, casting faint patches of pale light upon the ancient ground below.

Towering trees, their trunks wider than most buildings, stretched endlessly into the darkness above.

Massive vines wrapped around them like living chains.

The air was damp.

Heavy.

Every breath carried the scent of rain, moss, and ancient earth.

Yet beneath it all...

Something else lingered.

Something none of the Jedi could name.

Silence.

Not peaceful silence.

Dead silence.

No birds called from the branches.

No insects buzzed beneath the undergrowth.

Even the wind seemed unwilling to disturb the forest.

The only sounds were the quiet footsteps of the five Jedi as they carefully made their way toward the distant structure they had glimpsed during their descent.

The pressure surrounding them never truly faded.

Though Master Yarael Poof continuously centered himself within the Force, allowing his calm presence to spread naturally among the group, the darkness remained.

Like an unseen weight resting upon every shoulder.

Without him...

Even the strongest mind might eventually lose itself within this place.

Kit quietly glanced around.

"I've changed my mind again."

No one answered.

Even he wasn't trying to make a joke.

Aayla kept one hand resting near her lightsaber.

"I don't like how quiet it is."

Coleman Trebor nodded almost imperceptibly.

"Nor do I."

Khan walked near the front of the group, his eyes constantly scanning the forest around them.

Every instinct told him they were being watched.

Not through the Force.

By something...

Alive.

Minutes passed.

The forest never changed.

Ancient trees.

Endless shadows.

Silence.

Then...

Coleman abruptly stopped.

His hand rose.

A silent signal.

Everyone froze.

The Jedi immediately spread their awareness through the Force.

Nothing.

Kit slowly looked toward Coleman.

"What is—"

Coleman's expression sharpened.

"Above."

The warning came an instant before the attack.

A massive feline burst from the branches overhead.

Its body was lean yet heavily muscled, covered in dark green fur that blended almost perfectly with the surrounding vines. Long claws extended as it descended directly toward Coleman.

The Jedi Master was already moving.

His green lightsaber ignited in one smooth motion.

The beast never touched the ground.

One precise strike.

The creature fell lifeless among the roots.

No wasted movement.

No flourish.

Only mastery.

Before anyone could react—

Khan felt another ripple through the Force.

"Left!"

He thrust out his hand.

The Force exploded outward.

A second vine cat, hidden within the undergrowth, was hurled sideways before it could reach Aayla.

Its body slammed violently into the trunk of an enormous tree.

The impact stunned it.

Kit and Aayla moved without hesitation.

Blue and green blades crossed through the creature in perfect coordination.

The beast collapsed.

Silence returned.

Almost immediately.

Kit stared at the fallen predators.

"...Well."

"So much for wondering if anything lives here."

Aayla slowly deactivated her lightsaber.

"It seems life survived."

She looked toward the surrounding forest.

"It simply adapted."

Coleman knelt beside the first creature.

He carefully examined its claws.

"They weren't hunting for food."

He looked toward the dense canopy overhead.

"They were testing us."

His words lingered in the air.

No one argued.

Around them...

The forest remained silent.

Watching.

Waiting.

As though the two predators had merely been the first to greet those who dared enter.

The five Jedi exchanged silent glances.

Then continued deeper into the ancient woods.

The forest slowly began to thin.

For the first time since entering the ancient woods...

The towering trees gave way to weathered stone.

Roots as thick as a man's torso coiled around enormous blocks of black rock, splitting them apart after centuries of patient growth.

Vines hung from broken walls.

Fragments of carved pillars lay scattered across the forest floor.

Nature had claimed this place long ago.

Yet it had never truly erased it.

The five Jedi carefully moved through the ruins.

Coleman Trebor paused beside one of the fallen stones.

He brushed away centuries of moss.

Beneath it...

Ancient carvings emerged.

Symbols unlike any script he recognized.

"...I've never seen writing like this."

Yarael Poof quietly studied the markings.

"Ancient..."

"...very ancient."

No one attempted to decipher them.

Time had worn too much away.

Khan slowly looked ahead.

Through the dense vegetation...

The silhouette they had seen from orbit finally revealed itself.

It was enormous.

Not a tower.

Not a fortress.

Great stone walls slanted inward as they climbed toward a summit long since collapsed beneath the weight of time.

Much of the structure had disappeared beneath the surrounding earth.

Entire sections had caved inward.

Massive trees now grew directly through what had once been walls.

It was as though the world itself had spent centuries trying to bury it.

Kit slowly whistled.

"...That's bigger than it looked."

Aayla's eyes remained fixed upon the ancient ruin.

"Whatever this place once was..."

"...it must have been important."

No one answered.

The Force offered only silence.

The five Jedi carefully circled the structure.

No doorway revealed itself.

No staircase remained intact.

Only collapsed stone and tangled roots.

Until...

Khan stopped.

"There."

Part of the outer wall had collapsed inward, leaving behind a jagged opening just large enough for someone to pass through.

It was not an entrance.

It had been torn open by time itself.

Coleman examined the broken stone.

"This wasn't designed to be entered this way."

"No," Khan agreed.

"But it will have to do."

Without another word...

The five Jedi stepped inside.

Darkness immediately swallowed them.

The air changed.

It felt colder.

Heavier.

The silence they had experienced within the forest deepened until even their own breathing sounded distant.

Blue light filtered faintly through cracks high above, illuminating only fragments of the ancient chamber.

Broken pillars stretched toward a ceiling hidden in darkness.

Dust covered every surface.

Nothing had disturbed this place...

For countless generations.

Then...

It came.

The pressure.

Far greater than anything they had felt upon the surface.

The darkness crashed against their minds like an endless tide.

Kit staggered.

His hand instinctively reached for the nearby wall.

Aayla's breathing became uneven.

Coleman lowered himself slightly, instinctively grounding himself within the Force.

Even Khan clenched his jaw.

It felt as though invisible hands pressed against his thoughts, searching for every fear he carried.

Master Yarael Poof immediately closed his eyes.

The Force flowed from him once more.

Calm.

Steady.

Like a beacon within a storm.

Yet even his presence struggled against whatever surrounded them.

Sweat formed along his brow.

For the first time since arriving...

The darkness did not retreat.

It resisted him.

It pushed back.

The crushing weight grew stronger.

Stronger still.

Until...

Without warning...

It vanished.

Every trace of it.

The suffocating pressure disappeared so completely that the silence left behind almost felt louder.

The five Jedi slowly caught their breath.

None of them moved.

None of them understood.

Kit finally broke the silence.

"...Did anyone else feel that?"

No one answered.

They all had.

Coleman slowly looked deeper into the darkness ahead.

"It almost felt..."

He stopped.

Unable to finish the thought.

Yarael Poof's calm expression had not returned.

His eyes remained fixed upon the corridor before them.

Quietly...

Almost to himself...

He whispered,

"...We were tested."

Khan looked toward the passage disappearing into the ancient ruin.

"No."

His voice was barely above a whisper.

"I think..."

"...we were permitted."

The five Jedi continued deeper into the ancient structure.

Every step carried them farther from the light filtering through the collapsed entrance.

The slanted floor beneath their boots made each step awkward.

Whatever purpose this structure had once served...

It had never been designed for comfort.

Broken stone shifted beneath their feet.

Centuries of decay had left entire sections partially collapsed, forcing the group to carefully navigate around fallen pillars and enormous blocks of black stone.

Roots pushed through fractured walls.

Water slowly dripped from cracks high above.

The sound echoed endlessly through the darkness.

No one spoke.

The deeper they ventured...

The more oppressive the silence became.

Coleman Trebor paused beside another section of carved stone.

His fingers brushed away layers of dust.

More symbols.

The same strange language covered nearly every intact surface.

"They repeat," he observed quietly.

"The same markings appear throughout these halls."

Yarael Poof studied them for several moments.

"A language forgotten..."

"...perhaps."

Aayla carefully traced one of the carvings with her eyes.

"It almost feels..."

She hesitated.

"...ceremonial."

Khan looked farther down the corridor.

"If this truly was a place of worship..."

"Someone invested an unimaginable amount of effort into building it."

Kit glanced toward the towering walls surrounding them.

"I'm beginning to think whoever built this liked making visitors feel very small."

No one disagreed.

The ceilings stretched so high into darkness that even the glow from their lightsabers failed to reveal where they ended.

Every hallway felt deliberately oversized.

Every doorway stood several meters taller than necessary.

It was architecture built not merely to inspire awe...

But submission.

The five Jedi pressed onward.

The corridors twisted through the ancient ruin like veins beneath stone.

Some had collapsed completely.

Others disappeared into darkness beyond the reach of their lightsabers.

More than once they reached intersections where entire passageways had been buried beneath centuries of fallen rock.

Each time...

They chose another path.

Each decision carried them deeper.

The weight surrounding the ruin slowly returned.

Not as violently as before.

But enough that every Jedi remained keenly aware of it.

Master Yarael Poof continued walking near the center of the group.

His calm presence remained like a quiet current flowing through the Force.

Without it...

Even simple thoughts felt strangely difficult to hold.

Time itself became difficult to judge.

Minutes blurred into hours.

Or perhaps...

Only moments had passed.

Eventually...

The corridor widened.

The floor beneath them gradually leveled before opening into an enormous circular chamber.

The five Jedi instinctively slowed.

Towering stone columns surrounded the room.

Many had collapsed long ago, leaving broken fragments scattered across the floor.

Above them...

The ceiling disappeared into darkness.

Ancient cracks allowed faint shafts of blue light to filter inside whenever lightning flashed across the storm above.

The chamber itself was empty.

Or so it first appeared.

Then they noticed the passageways.

One.

Two.

Five.

Ten.

More than a dozen corridors stretched away from the circular chamber in every direction.

Some remained intact.

Others leaned dangerously from centuries of shifting stone.

Every one disappeared into darkness.

Kit slowly turned in place.

"...Well."

"I was hoping our mysterious destination would make things simpler."

Aayla let out a quiet sigh.

"I don't think it wants to."

Coleman studied the surrounding corridors.

"Someone designed this place deliberately."

"This isn't random construction."

"No," Khan agreed.

His gaze slowly moved from one dark passage to the next.

"It feels..."

"...like every path was meant to lead somewhere."

The chamber remained silent.

Five Jedi stood surrounded by more than a dozen ancient corridors, each disappearing into darkness.

Coleman Trebor slowly surveyed each passage.

"There are too many."

"We split up, we risk losing one another."

Yarael Poof gave a small shake of his head.

"No."

"Together..."

"...we remain."

Mace Windu's teachings echoed in Khan's mind.

Never travel alone.

Perhaps...

Plo Koon had been right to send the two Masters.

Kit slowly turned in a circle.

"So..."

"Anyone have a brilliant idea?"

Silence answered him.

Then...

Khan heard it.

"...At last..."

His eyes narrowed.

The voice had been little more than a whisper.

So faint...

He almost believed he had imagined it.

"...worthy..."

It came again.

Not through his ears.

Through the Force.

Ancient.

Weathered.

Like words carried across an impossible distance.

"...come..."

Khan slowly turned his head.

"...to me..."

Every hair along the back of his neck stood on end.

"...I shall..."

The whisper faltered.

As though struggling to remember the language it once spoke.

"...guide..."

"...strength..."

"...power..."

Khan's breathing slowed.

The voice wasn't commanding him.

It was calling.

Patiently.

Almost...

Hopefully.

"Khan?"

Aayla's voice snapped him back.

He blinked.

The others were looking at him.

"You all heard that?"

Silence.

Kit frowned.

"...Heard what?"

"The voice."

Khan looked between them.

"It was speaking."

Coleman immediately stepped closer.

"What did it say?"

Khan hesitated.

"It was difficult to understand."

"But..."

He looked toward one of the corridors.

"It wants me to follow it."

The chamber fell completely still.

Yarael Poof's expression changed for the first time since entering the ruin.

"What you hear..."

"...none of us do."

Coleman slowly rested a hand upon his lightsaber.

"The Force can speak."

"But never like this."

Khan closed his eyes.

The whisper came once more.

Clearer.

Stronger.

Not louder.

Closer.

He slowly opened his eyes.

Then pointed toward one of the many corridors.

"...That way."

"I can still hear it."

Neither Master moved immediately.

Coleman and Yarael quietly exchanged glances.

Neither needed to speak.

Something was deeply wrong.

Yarael stepped toward Khan.

"Remain still."

Khan nodded.

Yarael gently placed two fingers against Khan's forehead.

Closing his eyes...

He reached into the Force.

Not searching for the voice.

Searching for Khan.

A calm current of light slowly wrapped itself around the young Jedi's mind.

Not to silence what called him.

But to strengthen the one listening.

Yarael withdrew his hand.

"It is the best I can do."

His voice remained calm.

"But whatever calls to you..."

"...do not answer it."

Khan nodded.

"I won't."

The whisper returned.

"...closer..."

"...come..."

"...worthy..."

This time...

Khan said nothing.

He simply tightened his grip around the hilt of his lightsaber.

The five Jedi slowly turned toward the corridor.

Together...

They descended deeper into the ancient darkness.

The whisper never left Khan's mind.

If anything...

It grew clearer.

The farther they walked down the corridor...

The stronger it became.

"...closer..."

"...worthy..."

"...free..."

The passage finally opened.

The five Jedi stepped into a vast circular chamber.

Every one of them stopped.

Unlike the rest of the ruin...

This room had survived almost untouched.

Towering stone pillars circled the chamber.

Ancient chains, each thicker than a man's arm, stretched between them.

At their center...

Suspended high above the ground...

Hung an enormous stone coffin.

Silence filled the room.

No decorations.

No statues.

No offerings.

Only chains.

Dozens of them.

Coleman Trebor slowly looked upward.

"This wasn't built to honor someone."

His voice echoed softly through the chamber.

"It was built..."

He stopped.

Yarael Poof finished the thought.

"...to keep something contained."

A chill passed through the room.

No one spoke.

Khan couldn't.

The whisper had become overwhelming.

"...finally..."

His breathing grew uneven.

"...so long..."

His hand trembled.

"...worthy..."

The Force surrounding him twisted.

Yarael immediately sensed it.

"Khan."

The young Jedi didn't answer.

His eyes had become distant.

"Khan!"

For the briefest instant...

Everything went silent.

Then—

His lightsaber ignited.

The blue blade flashed through the darkness.

Before anyone could react...

Khan's arm moved.

Not by his own will.

The lightsaber left his hand.

Spinning through the chamber.

"Coleman!"

Yarael shouted.

Too late.

The blade sliced cleanly through one ancient chain.

Then another.

Then another.

One after another...

The enormous chains snapped apart.

The sound echoed like thunder.

The final chain broke.

For one suspended heartbeat...

Nothing happened.

Then...

The coffin fell.

BOOM!

The impact shook the entire ruin.

Dust exploded outward.

The shockwave echoed through every corridor.

Far above...

The ancient forest stirred.

Birds that had remained silent for centuries burst into the sky.

The ground trembled beneath the Jedi's feet.

Only then...

Did Khan regain control.

He blinked.

His breathing became ragged.

His lightsaber returned to his waiting hand through the Force.

He stared at it.

Confused.

"...What..."

Kit looked at him in disbelief.

"Khan..."

"...why did you do that?"

Khan slowly looked toward him.

"What..."

"...do you mean?"

No one answered.

Instead...

Their eyes were fixed upon the fallen coffin.

A deep crack slowly spread across its surface.

Then another.

Stone shifted.

The ancient lid slid sideways.

Grinding against centuries of dust.

It struck the floor with a deafening crash.

Silence.

The cloud of dust slowly drifted through the chamber.

Nothing moved.

Then...

A sound.

A single...

Slow...

Mechanical breath.

The dust began to settle.

Two yellow eyes opened within the darkness.

Watching.

Ancient.

Unblinking.

The figure slowly rose from within the broken prison.

Its body was wrapped in tattered black robes that had somehow endured the passing of ages.

Fragments of ancient armor remained fused to its frame.

Metal and scarred flesh had long since become indistinguishable from one another.

Its face...

What little remained of it...

Bore countless old wounds.

A respirator-like apparatus covered much of its mouth and jaw, each slow breath accompanied by a harsh mechanical hiss.

It did not move aggressively.

It simply stood.

Looking at them.

Then...

Its eyes settled upon Khan.

The ancient being tilted its head ever so slightly.

As though recognizing something.

The chamber fell completely silent.

No one moved.

No one breathed.

The being's voice echoed through the chamber.

Not loud.

Not angry.

Merely...

Certain.

"...At last."
