Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: The unexpected things

Arthur can't help but wonder what lies beneath that cold exterior. Is she just reserved, or is there something more? Will she ever warm up to him—or will she keep him at arm's length, as she seems to do with the rest of the world?

At lunch, Arthur's friends gather around him as they head toward the cafeteria. Richard nudges him with a grin. "So, what do you think of your new deskmate, Arthur? Quite the beauty, isn't she?"

Jane smirks. "Yeah, you two would make a great pair—Mr. Perfect and the Ice Queen." Arthur rolls his eyes, trying to ignore their teasing. "She's just a classmate," he says.

Henry, always the observer, chimes in, "Well, you were staring at her a lot. Maybe you're more interested than you think."

Arthur suddenly stops, he realizes Nora probably doesn't know where the cafeteria is. His friends are still talking, but their voices fade into the background as he turns and runs back toward the classroom.

As he enters the classroom, he finds Nora sitting alone, staring out the window. The sight tugs at something inside him—she looks so isolated, so alone. "Nora," he calls softly. She turns, her expression still as unreadable as before. "Yes?"

"Come with me," Arthur says, offering her a hand. "I'll show you where the cafeteria is. Nora hesitates for a moment before standing up and following him. They walk in silence, and Arthur can't help but feel the distance between them.

At the cafeteria, Arthur grabs two plates and hands one to Nora. They go through the line together, and then he leads her to the table where his friends are seated. Nora's presence at the table is met with curious glances.

Nora answers their questions with short, polite responses, her voice measured and calm. Arthur notices how she avoids eye contact with anyone but him.

After lunch, they return to the classroom. As Arthur settles into his seat, a small paper ball lands on his desk. He unfolds it, and inside, in neat, elegant handwriting, are two simple words: Thank you.

He glances at Nora, who's watching him from the corner of her eye. When their gazes meet, she quickly looks away. Arthur smiles to himself, tucking the note into his pocket. Maybe, just maybe, there's more to Nora than meets the eye.

Meanwhile, across town in a sleek, modern office, Max stands before a large window, his hands clasped behind his back. Behind him, an older man fidgets nervously. "I'm truly sorry, Mr. Max," the old man says, his voice trembling slightly. "I know I promised you the contract, but…" Max turns, his expression unreadable.

He's young—too young, some would say, to be the CEO of a company as influential as Innovators—but there's a hard edge to his gaze that commands respect. "It's fine," he says smoothly. "These things happen."

The old man shifts uncomfortably. "Aren't you interested in knowing who won the bid?"

Max smiles "There's only one company that could have taken it—Nexus, right?" The old man nods. "Yes, that's correct. Luna's firm." Max's smile widens slightly. "Of course. She's the only real competition I have."

The old man hesitates before speaking again. "Mr. Max… do you know anything about her? Luna, I mean. She's such a mystery…"

Max chuckles, a low, dark sound. "No one knows anything about her, except that she's brilliant and ruthless."

He turns back to the window. Luna might be a mystery, but she's also a worthy opponent.

As the day comes to a close, both Arthur and Max find themselves lost in thought—Arthur wondering about the beautiful, enigmatic girl who now sits beside him, and Max contemplating his mysterious rival. Little do they know, their paths are destined to cross in ways neither could have predicted.
