Chapter 23 - Chapter 23 The Boy Who Was Taken from His Dead Mother’s Belly

Brat!

(Slap)

"But Aunt Astia!"

Astia: "Be quiet… we're not even blood-related. Because of you, my sister is dead. You damn brat.If you hadn't been born like some kind of monster… coming out of my sister's belly while she was already lying dead on the ground… because she protected you…We're not even related by blood. She… she was a prostitute! So deal with it, you little bastard!"

Astia: "She'd still be alive. I can't stand the sight of your face!"

"Don't be so mean to him,"said the other, younger aunt — her name was Teressa.

Teressa: "Stop it… you're scaring him."

Astia: "Hmph… I'll never forget what happened."

The woman lay on the ground, holding her stomach. Her belly wasn't injured — she had opened it herself to pull the baby out before it was too late. She dragged herself across the earth, her intestines trailing, crawling toward the village… where her two sisters eventually found her.She named the child Diego. Then she closed her eyes… and died.

That is how it happened.

Teressa: "It's okay… Aunt Astia loves you. She just gets angry sometimes."

She slept beside him, gently patting his stomach, when suddenly—

(Kaboom!)

Teressa: "Huh?!"

Astia: "Teressa! We need to go—now! A monster is attacking!"

She picked up Diego and ran.

Astia: "Go—come on!"

They ran, a huge mutated tree monster coming after them.

Astia: "Damn it… damn it… ugh… Teressa, watch out!"

She pushed her aside.A massive tree trunk came crashing down directly on top of Astia.

(CRASH)

Astia: "Aaaaaaaargh!"

Teressa: "Huh? No… Astia!"

Astia: "Run… run… please…Take care… of Diego… please…"

Diego: "…Aunt…"

She touched his cheek.

Astia: "I'm sorry… for being so harsh…The truth is… I always loved you…I… I was so happy when my sister named you Diego.Because… that's what I wanted to name my own child… but…I can't have children because of my illness…So I was happy…I love you…My little Diego…Now go!"

They fled.Behind them, the monster crushed Astia completely.

(Splatter)

Diego: "Ugh…"

Teressa: "Don't look… don't look, Diego… don't look."

She kept running until she reached a river.

Teressa: "I… I won't make it in time… it'll catch us…"

Tree roots crept closer.

She ran, desperately, until she found a cave.

Teressa: "There… hide there…"

She hid Diego inside.

Diego: "Aunt Teressa?"

Teressa: "It's okay… Aunt Teressa loves you.I'll come back.Wait here.Take this necklace.Promise me… you'll always keep it with you… no matter what."

She left.

She never returned.

Later…

Diego walked back to the village. There… he saw what happened.

Diego: "…huh…"

Aunt Teressa had come back for her sister. Her body lay on the ground, mouth open, a deep wound across her throat.Astia's corpse was barely recognizable.

Diego: "Aunt… Teressa… Aunt Astia…"

"Oh dear… it seems I was too late,"said an old man.

Diego: "Huh?"

"I was too late…Forgive me… Astia… and Teressa…"

He looked at Diego.

"…Hmm… ugh…"

Then he noticed the necklace.

"I see… so you're…my grandson!"

Diego: "Huh?"

That's how it truly was.

Kisa: "Oh… Diego… you poor thing…"

Nacht: "…hmm."

Kisa: "What about you, Nacht? That sword you carry on your back… is it important?"

Nacht: "Hmm… well… since you both told your stories…I guess it's time I tell you mine…"
