…
The backyard was modest by any standard, flat packed earth, a weathered training post at the far edge, a low wooden fence bordering it on three sides.
No decoration, just enough space to move and enough resistance underfoot to matter.
Murakami and Aiko stood facing each other at its center.
Aiko had shed her outer layer, sleeves pushed to the elbow, her body weight settled into a quiet readiness that came from years of drilling the same fundamentals into muscle memory.
She looked comfortable and prepared.
She also looked, Murakami noted, like someone who was still thinking.
"Come," he said.
And she moved immediately with no hesitation or telegraphed wind-up as she closed the distance fast, weight low, leading with a straight entry that was textbook First Kata: clean launch, correct angle, efficient use of forward momentum.
The Straight Penetration Fist, executed exactly as drilled.
Murakami's torso shifted to the right as the strike passed his left shoulder close enough that she felt the displaced air against her knuckles.
And unknown as to when, his hand was already at her extended wrist, not grabbing, but redirecting as her momentum carried her a step further than she'd intended but she recovered quickly, planted her feet and turned.
'Good,' he noted internally. 'The recovery is better than it attack.'
She came again, this time varying the entry with a low feint toward his lead leg before converting upward into the Compression Short Fist, the technique designed for close quarters where a full extension had no room to develop.
Murakami let it get closer this time.
The compressed strike landed against his forearm as he raised it, meeting structure with structure rather than retreating from it and he felt the technique's intent clearly.
It was honest, correct and exactly what the beginners Tier One was supposed to produce.
"Again," he said, lowering his arm.
She came again.
And again.
The first ten exchanges followed the same shape: Aiko attacking with clean, correct techniques, each one a complete action, properly structured, arriving without wasted movement, and Murakami receiving them with the minimal response each required.
A shift to the side.
A check.
A subtle redirection.
Nothing that looked like effort, because it wasn't.
She wasn't losing because her techniques were wrong.
She was losing because she was still choosing them.
He saw it in the half-second pause before each transition, the faint reorganization behind her eyes as she assessed, selected, and then executed.
It was fast, fast enough that most opponents at her level wouldn't notice or be able to exploit it.
But it was there, and against an intermediate Tier Two opponent like himself, it would become a liability she couldn't afford.
He decided to show her what it looked like from the outside.
The next time she launched her entry, he didn't simply receive it.
He moved into it, not to strike, but to close the distance she'd calculated for, removing the space her technique had been designed to use.
Her Straight Penetration Fist arrived at a range it hadn't been built for, the structure collapsing under its own extension.
She adjusted, and to her credit, the adjustment was fast, converting into the Shock Transfer Palm at close range.
But he'd already moved sideways so that the palm landed on his shoulder rather than his sternum.
The force bleeding off at that angle rather than transferring cleanly.
He felt the shock, but not the way she'd intended.
"You chose the conversion before you finished reading," Murakami said as he stepped back to distance himself.
"You saw the first technique fail and went to the next option on your list. You didn't look at where I actually was."
Aiko exhaled through her nose. "I know."
"Show me that you know."
She reset her stance as something shifted in her expression. She lunged again.
This time the entry was the same with the Straight Penetration Fist, but when he moved to close the distance on her, something different happened.
She didn't convert to the next technique on the sequence.
She stopped, not in hesitation, but a genuine read, a half-beat where her body actually processed where he was before deciding what came next.
Her next attack, the Redirect Palm arrived late by half a second, imprecise in its angle, and it still didn't land cleanly.
But it had been a response rather than a selection.
Murakami stepped back.
"Better."
Aiko stood up out of her stance, breathing slightly elevated, one hand pressed to her knee. "That felt completely wrong."
"It always does at first. Choosing feels like control. Responding feels like losing control." He held her gaze evenly. "You haven't lost control. You've just stopped interrupting yourself."
She was quiet for a moment, working something over behind her eyes.
It was unknown whether she understood what Murakami said, but—
"Again," she said.
Murakami nodded once and went again.
The next several exchanges were messier than the first set.
Aiko's techniques arrived with less precision, her timing were occasionally off, the clean structure of her attacks were briefly disrupted by the effort of trying to not think between movements.
She made mistakes she hadn't made earlier.
A missed entry angle. A conversion that started before the read was finished, then visibly self-corrected midway through, which was worse than either committing or stopping.
But underneath the mess, something was changing.
By the eighth exchange in the second set, the pause was gone.
Not gone because she'd suppressed it, it was gone because she'd stopped needing it.
A Strike came in, he shifted, she followed the shift rather than the plan, and the Axis Turning Kick arrived from an angle that had no business being available to her from that position.
It clipped his thigh, making legitimate contact.
It was totally unplanned, unrepeatable, but entirely real.
She blinked.
He looked at her leg, then at her.
"That," he said simply.
Aiko stared at where the kick had landed, like she was trying to retrace how it had gotten there. "I didn't… I wasn't planning that."
"I know."
"I don't even know if I can do it again."
"You won't be able to." He rolled his shoulder once, settling back into a neutral stance. "Not yet. But you've done it once, which means your body already knows the difference. Now it's just repetition until it stops being an accident."
She let out a long breath, somewhere between frustrated and something that wasn't quite satisfaction but was close to it.
"How long did it take you to stop choosing?"
Murakami considered the question honestly. "Longer than it should have."
She gave him a look. "That's not an answer."
He rolled his eyes at her. "It's the one you're getting."
She made a sound somewhere between a laugh and a groan, pushed her hair back from her face, and reset her stance.
"One more set," she said.
He nodded.
"Come," she said, and this time it was her giving the word.
He smiled and moved.
In a flash, he was already in front of her, causing her eyes to widen at the speed of his movement.
Just when she thought he was about to throw a straight punch, Murakami bent low and struck with a low kick aimed to sweep her feet off the ground.
Albeit late, Aiko was able to jump over the sweep but as soon as her feet touched ground again, Murakami was already there.
His palm shot forward in a Structure Disrupt Palm, aimed at her midsection.
Aiko twisted her torso at the last moment, the strike grazing her side instead of landing clean, but the force still pushed her back a step, numbing the muscles where it connected.
She countered immediately, launching a rising knee toward his chin.
Murakami leaned back just enough for the knee to whistle past his face and before she could retract her leg, he hooked his arm under her thigh and yanked forward, unbalancing her completely.
Aiko reacted on instinct and used the momentum to spin mid-air, driving an elbow toward the side of his head. Murakami released her leg and stepped inside the arc, turning what should have been a powerful strike into a glancing blow against his shoulder.
The impact still stung, but he absorbed it and countered with a short, sharp palm to her solar plexus.
The hit landed solidly this time. Aiko's breath exploded out of her in a sharp gasp.
She staggered backward, one hand instinctively pressing against her abdomen, but she didn't fall, instead, she used the backward momentum to create distance and reset her stance, breathing hard.
Murakami didn't press the advantage immediately.
He stood calmly, watching her recover. "You're getting slower on the recovery," he said quietly.
Aiko's eyes flashed with competitive fire. "Again."
She lunged forward, chaining a series of rapid punches.
Murakami deflected each one with minimal movements, redirecting her force rather than meeting it head-on.
On the final uppercut, he slipped to the side and delivered a sharp palm strike to her ribs, using just enough power to make her flinch without breaking anything.
Aiko hissed through her teeth but flowed into her next move.
She dropped low and executed a spinning leg sweep of her own, trying to mirror what he had done earlier. Murakami hopped over it effortlessly, then used the brief opening to close the distance once more.
His palm came down in a chopping motion toward her shoulder.
She blocked it with both arms crossed, but the force drove her down to one knee.
Before she could rise, Murakami's knee rose to meet her jaw in a controlled but firm strike.
Aiko's head snapped back. She rolled with the blow, tumbling across the training ground and coming up in a crouch several meters away, breathing heavily, a small trickle of blood at the corner of her mouth.
For a moment, neither moved.
Aiko wiped the blood away with the back of her hand and grinned, tired but fierce. "Again."
Murakami studied her for a second, then nodded once. "One more set."
She pushed herself up, resetting her stance with visible effort. Sweat plastered strands of hair to her forehead, and her breathing was ragged, but her eyes burned with determination.
Murakami remained composed, his own breathing steady, barely winded.
They clashed again.
This time Aiko came in aggressive, mixing feints with powerful strikes.
A heavy palm strike aimed at his chest.
Murakami parried and countered with a short elbow to her side.
She absorbed it and drove a knee toward his thigh.
He shifted his weight, turning the knee strike into a passing blow, then swept her supporting leg in one clean motion.
Aiko hit the ground hard but immediately rolled to her feet, refusing to stay down.
She charged once more, launching a flurry of kicks and punches.
Murakami simply moved like water, flowing around her attacks, redirecting force, and landing precise counters, a palm to the shoulder here, a low kick to disrupt balance there, a controlled strike to the ribs that made her grunt in pain.
The final exchange came fast.
Aiko overextended on a powerful straight punch. Murakami stepped inside her guard, trapped her arm, and used her own momentum against her.
He pivoted and threw her over his hip in a clean judo-style takedown.
Aiko hit the ground with a solid thud, the air leaving her lungs in a rush.
She lay there for a few seconds, chest heaving, staring up at the sky.
Murakami stood over her, offering a hand.
Aiko stared at it for a moment, then took it, letting him pull her to her feet.
She winced, pressing a hand to her bruised ribs, but there was no real anger in her expression, only exhausted satisfaction.
"You're still ridiculous," she muttered, brushing dirt from her clothes.
Murakami allowed the faintest hint of a smile. "You're getting stronger. Your reactions are improving."
Aiko rolled her eyes but couldn't hide the small grin that tugged at her lips. "One day I'll actually land a clean hit."
"One day," he agreed calmly.
They stood together in the training clearing as the sun continued its slow climb, breathing hard, bodies aching, but both satisfied with the session.
For now, the world outside their small training space could wait a little longer.
