Peter was low on web fluid. Making a thicker line of web usually exhausted him faster. Despite his bones, the added weight of the wings made Angel weigh as much as any normal person. Spider-Man spun quickly, dodging gunfire. He launched Angel toward a rooftop, then fired two lines of web, launching himself into the adjacent building. Crawling and rolling along the wall, he tried to stay out of sight of the newcomer's lasers. Once on the roof, he took the time to eject his web cartridges and quickly inserted fresh ones.
Below him, George Stacy watched the leader of the military group. Will Stryker coordinated his men quickly and also quickly reprimanded the officers for using live ammunition. He told them to leave, and Stacy was inclined to agree. The only thing keeping him on edge was questionable jurisdiction. It was a common conflict between mutant response and local police departments. In George's own experience, police fell into three categories when one agency took over from another. Some were eager to be off the case, others were professional enough not to care, and there were those who wanted to keep the case. Sometimes it was pride, or the need to see a case through to the end, to know what the outcome would be. George was similar, which was why Stryker had to step up to his side.
"Move it, Captain, your men are in the way," Will said.
As the commander confronted the captain, the men following him braced themselves. More troops in advanced riot armor spilled out of the trucks. One of the men dropped several disc-shaped objects. The man in sunglasses and a cowboy hat lit up, with coordinates and video feeds appearing in his lenses. He grinned at the sight of Spider-Man, recovering from the police chase. Within seconds, layers of the man's body disintegrated: skin exposed muscle tissue and organs, organs gave way to bones, until nothing remained, not even an atom of the man.
Spider-Man's spider-sense kicked in. He looked around, trying to find the danger. Suddenly, something hit him in the back. The blow threw him off the roof, hitting his shoulder on the ledge. Peter looked toward the source of the attack. It was the man in the cowboy hat, a metal glove strapped to his hand. The knuckles of the glove flashed as he suddenly disappeared. Again, his spider-sense pinged. Spider-Man spun around, meeting the glove with his face. His vision blurred, unable to tell if the man had disappeared again or not.
"Intel confirms you're not a mutant child, but that doesn't mean you're not MRD or X- force's problem ," the man said, hitting Peter with a left hook for insult and then punching him in the chest with his gloved hand.
Peter felt like screaming in pain as his back hit the ledge. He quickly leaped off the roof, fired a web, and swung down to the roof where he had dropped Angel . There, the dark-haired man with the rifle was standing next to Angel , next to the man in the armor. Suddenly, the man in the cowboy hat appeared between them, nodding at Peter. The barrel of the young man's rifle flashed, before a bolt of electricity flew toward Peter. He spun in the air, barely dodging the bolt, feeling static on his shoulder. The man in the armor pulled a pair of tonfas from his belt and lunged at Peter as he fell. Spider-Man dodged the man's blows, then punched him in the face. But to his surprise, the man was still standing, resuming his attack. Peter punched him again, in his exposed jaw. Though he bled a little, the man didn't seem to process the blow. It wasn't the armor, because Peter had punched him twice in the jaw. The man hit Peter in the face with his club, forcing him to jump back.
"Well, electrical powers. That other guy either doesn't process pain or he's absorbing kinetic force," Peter summarized, his spider-sense kicking in as the man in the cowboy hat disappeared again. "But this guy, old-fashioned teleportation, right on cue!" he thought, taking another hit to the side.
He counted the time between the teleportation and his reappearance, interpreted the pattern of attacks. If he deviated even a second, his arm would literally end up impaling him through the head. The man disappeared, and relying on his spider-sense, Peter concentrated. When the man reappeared behind him, he grabbed the man's wrist, preventing him from hitting him. Suddenly, they both vanished, and Peter felt terrible agony. His skin peeled away, his organs disappeared, his bones dissolved into nothingness. An instant passed, and he could breathe again, could feel his body again. It felt like he'd run a marathon; before his powers, anyone would have fainted by now. Which, obviously, spoke volumes about the man in the cowboy hat's stamina.
"Well, you know what? It took me three minutes to do what New York's finest could never do," the man boasted.
Peter looked up at the man and saw he was standing with Stryker and Stacy. The MRD troops were surrounding him, their rifles pointed. Peter moved his hands quickly, spraying the tape on his neck and adjusting the mask over his shirt. The gloves didn't matter; he had no background checks for fingerprints, and he always bought the parts and chemicals for his web-shooters with cash. The tape on his neck bought him a few hours to live.
"Clever," the man said, before punching Peter in the face again.
"Well done, Wraith ," Stryker said , reaching for his earpiece. "Nord, is the winged one in custody?" he asked.
" Commander , with his wings and arms tied," said the man in armor. "I had to revive him, but Bradley's shot stopped his heart."
"It was an accident, sir," the black-haired man, Bradley, said quickly.
"No lethal force was authorized, just get him in the truck. Captain, get your men out of here right now," Stryker repeated to Stacy.
"I'll take Spider- Man into my custody," George quickly stepped over Spider- Man 's body , preventing the soldiers from grabbing him.
