Chapter 1: Lost Focus

Ethan (voice-over):

You ever wondered who films the people saving the world? Yeah, that's me. Ethan. Cameraman. Zone-Inner certified. Class-C. My job is simple — I capture chosen ones. Heroes, lovers, legends — the interesting ones.

The city freezes mid-motion. A red streak rushes through the air, saving people from falling debris. Ethan stands calmly in the paused scene, holding a floating camera lens that glows faintly.

Ethan (voice-over):

This guy here — Speedstar. Chosen one, type: speedster. I follow him everywhere. Every rescue, every explosion, every dramatic pose. And before you ask — yeah, we're invisible to them. No one ever sees the crew.

Evan (over comms):

Ethan, your angle's off. Try not to miss this one. It's the third time this week.

Ethan:

Relax, Evan. I've got it.

(pauses)

Just checking exposure.

Evan:

Exposure doesn't take five seconds. You're zoning out again, man. Not another volcano situation.

Ethan:

That volcano was overrated.

A faint chuckle comes from the rest of the invisible crew. Ethan refocuses his lens. The speedster dashes again, carrying a family to safety.

Ethan (voice-over):

Truth is, I've done this a thousand times. Whole galaxies of heroes. And somehow, it still feels like I'm watching the same movie.

His lens sweeps across the street — capturing reactions, panic, awe. Then it stops. Inside a small café, behind the window, sits a girl. She's not watching the hero. She's reading a book, calm and distant from the chaos outside.

Ethan (quietly):

Wait… she's not even looking.

He adjusts the lens to zoom slightly on her. She turns a page, uninterested in the shouting crowd.

Evan (sharply):

Ethan, what are you doing? The shot's breaking up!

Ethan:

Yeah, yeah. Fixing it.

Evan:

Focus, man. You keep this up, the Author's gonna notice.

Ethan pulls the frame back toward the speedster, catching the tail end of the rescue. The shot wobbles slightly. The rest of the crew groans over comms.

Crew Member (background):

We missed the perfect close-up again. Great.

Ethan:

Sorry. My fault. Got distracted.

Evan:

By what?

Ethan:

Nothing important. Just… something I noticed.

Evan:

Well, notice less. You know the rule — we film, we don't interfere. We do what we were born to do.

Ethan glances at him through the thin blue light of the lens.

Ethan (softly):

Do what I was born to do… right.

The speedster waves goodbye to the frozen citizens, then disappears in a flash. The mission wraps. The crew prepares to head back.

Evan:

Alright, pack it up. Portal's open. Let's move, people.

Ethan turns off his lens. The paused city begins to fade. He takes one last look through the window — the girl is closing her book, standing up. She steps away, disappearing into the moving crowd.

Evan (calling out):

Ethan! You coming or what?

Ethan keeps his eyes on where the girl was. Then he turns and walks toward the glowing portal.

Ethan (voice-over):

Yeah. Coming.

He takes one last look back — the café window now empty — and steps through. The portal closes.
