I looked around, my eyes widening slightly in shock, but I composed myself immediately.
"Look… see what's at the hilltop."
"Look at this place… is this where we would be staying?"
"It is nothing like Wu Village… it looks so rundown and abandoned."
The villagers who had been resting slowly stood up and looked at the place before them. The hill was huge, and although it seemed to have once been part of the forest, there was a break in the land below that opened into a wide space.
The land was vast. Scattered across it were houses that looked old, many of them damaged, and some clearly burned down.
"Everyone, there is a good spot over there. You should all go there and rest. Do not wander around. We do not know what could be in a place like this."
Zhang Lei spoke as Chen Guo and Li Shan directed the villagers toward a safer area where they could settle for the moment.
I remained where I stood, looking at the cluster of broken houses ahead of me.
