Chapter 214 - Chapter 213: Merry’s Farewell

"Eh!!" Chopper exclaimed in shock. "So the Going Merry really came here by itself?"

Franky explained, "At this point, that's the only explanation. A ship spirit was born. It's an old belief passed down among shipwrights."

"It's because you cherished her," Franky continued.

"When the crew loves a ship, the ship gives thanks in return. This ship wanted to carry you all to the other side no matter what—so it showed itself in human form. That means she was truly happy."

"Tch," Zoro muttered. "The more you talk, the more ridiculous it sounds."

"What was that, you moss-headed bastard!" Sanji snapped, immediately locking into a fight with Zoro.

Chopper jumped in too, while Sandy grabbed Zoro's face and said, "Seriously, man, stop walking around like someone owes you money! Smile a little—yeah, like that—be gentler…"

"That's enough!!" Zoro roared, shoving Sandy away.

A large ship slowly approached from the distance, and voices shouted from far away:

"It's the Straw Hat Pirates—they're alive!"

"Unbelievable, they actually came back from Enies Lobby!"

Sanji squinted. "It's a ship from the Galley-La Company."

Sandy rolled his eyes. "Yeah, we can read. The giant letters on the side kinda gave that away."

Luffy waved. "Iceburg!!"

Sandy suddenly froze and turned around sharply.

Sanji frowned. "What's wrong?"

Crack—BOOM!

The Going Merry split in half from the middle. The break point was exactly the spot where Sandy always slept.

Even though they were mentally prepared, seeing it happen crushed them.

Great things don't linger—they fear attachment.

And after experiencing so much together, how could anyone escape the pain of letting go?

"What just happened?!" Zoro yelled.

"Nothing sudden," Sanji replied quietly, cigarette trembling. "This was inevitable. The Going Merry has already been judged a ship that can't sail anymore."

"Merry!!" Nami, Usopp, and Chopper stared at the broken deck, stunned.

Luffy sprinted forward, kneeling desperately.

"Please, Iceburg! Do something! You're shipwrights—you can fix her! She's been with us through everything, she saved our lives—please help us!"

Silence fell. Iceburg looked at him quietly, then spoke softly.

"If that's the case… let her rest."

Tears slid down Sandy's face before he even realized. Saying goodbye forever was too damn hard.

Seeing Luffy's eyes still begging, Iceburg exhaled and said, "Everything that could be done… I've already done."

He explained: after Kaku threw the ship from Dock One, the waves carried her to Cocoyasi Village.

The Merry, in her human form, called out to Iceburg. He understood her feelings, so he repaired her—just enough for one final journey.

The final voyage.

Silence filled the air.

Iceburg looked at the burning ship. "This is a miracle. A miracle of a ship that far exceeded its limits. In all my years as a shipwright, I've never seen a ship like this. Its life was magnificent."

Luffy closed his eyes for a long moment, then said quietly, "Understood."

The Captain had spoken. The farewell began.

A moment later, Luffy stood by himself in a small wooden boat on one side of the Merry, the rest of the crew in another behind him.

"Are you ready?" he asked.

"Yeah," everyone answered.

Luffy lifted a torch.

"Going Merry, the sea below is dark and lonely… we will send you off."

He brought the flame to the broken deck.

The fire spread instantly, engulfing the ship.

"Thank you for carrying us all this time," Luffy said, voice trembling.

Snow began to fall.

"Snow?" Chopper whispered.

Softly, the song 'Dear Friend' began to play.

Sandy had set a speaker onto the railing to say goodbye properly.

Men shouldn't cry when saying goodbye—but watching the Merry burn, every memory replayed like a movie:

The railing where they fished.

The deck where they fought and laughed.

The storms they survived.

The panic.

The triumph.

From Syrup Village, to Baratie, to Skypiea, to 10,000 meters above the clouds…

Franky burst into tears first.

"Turn off that damn song! I'm not crying! I'm definitely not crying, you bastard—whoaahhhhh—"

The snow thickened, and tears flowed freely.

CRACK… CRACK…

The ship began breaking apart.

"I'm sorry!"

A gentle voice echoed over the flames. Everyone froze.

"I wanted to carry everyone farther… I'm sorry. I really wanted to sail with you forever."

The voice of the Going Merry.

Everyone broke down.

"Merry!!!" Chopper wailed.

Nami covered her mouth and sobbed uncontrollably.

Tears streamed down Luffy's face.

"We're the ones who should be saying sorry, Merry!!!"

Sandy looked up at the spiritual presence floating above the flames.

"Observation Haki… a spiritual body?"

Luffy shouted, voice cracking.

"I didn't know how to steer—I kept crashing you into icebergs. I ripped your sails. Zoro and Sanji are rough idiots too—"

Sandy whispered quickly in his mind:

[pheromone system, can I store a spiritual body?]

[As long as it's not a living creature, yes. Without a vessel it will dissipate.]

[Got it.]

"Space Field!!"

A massive transparent dome surrounded the spiritual form.

"Hey! Sandy! What are you—?" Nami gasped.

Without answering, Sandy leaped upward and slashed down with his sword.

CLANG!

The top mast of the Galley-La ship was severed cleanly.

"What the hell are you doing?!"

"Just because your ship is sinking you don't get to destroy ours!!"

"Did your brain melt from sadness?!"

Ignoring the shouting, Sandy roared.

"Space Swap! Merry—you want to say goodbye? No way! Get in there!!"

The Merry's voice vanished instantly.

Sandy landed back on the small boat and shoved the severed mast into the Space Backpack.

[pheromone system—is this okay? When we get a new ship, I'll connect her to it.]

[No problem.]

"Again!!"

Sandy backflipped—but his momentum sent everyone except Luffy, including Kokoro and Franky, flying into the ocean.

"AHHHHH!!!"

"SANDY!!! WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING!!"

Laughing proudly, Sandy leaped beside Luffy.

"Luffy! Merry isn't gone—she's in my Space Backpack!"

"Really?!" Luffy cried.

"Would I joke about that?"

"Again!!" Luffy shouted, doing dozens of backflips—

—and fell directly into the ocean.

"GLUB—GLUB—GLUB—!!"

The Galley-La workers watched in horror.

"…Are the Straw Hats insane?"

"Did they throw themselves into the sea over a ship?!"

Then—

WHOOSH!!

Everyone appeared back on the Galley-La ship.

"DON'T HIT MY FACE—I WAS WRONG—I'M SORRY—STOP—AAAHH!!"

And Sandy was immediately beaten into a pulp.
