Chapter 18 - Chapter 18: The Slaughter

The coliseum didn't cheer when he walked in.

It held its breath.

Fifty thousand seats. Fifty thousand eyes. All of them had heard the story by now. Nexus. The man who broke Lord Marshal Bren Tal's neck in daylight. Real strength. Monster.

The sand was fresh. White. It would be red soon.

Varric stood in the high box, hand resting on the iron railing like it could hold him back. He didn't smile. He calculated.

Below, the gate groaned open.

Not one door. Three.

1. The Veterans

First: "Ironjaw" Korr. Twenty years in the pits. Jaw replaced with steel after a minotaur took the original. Lost count of kills at eighty. Carried a hammer that needed two men to lift.

Second: The Twin Blades. Brothers from the northern wastes. Born together, fought together, bled together. One died, the other did too. They moved like one body with four arms. Spears whirling.

Third: "The Wall" Varek. Seven feet tall. Scar tissue for skin. He didn't fight to win. He fought to make the sand remember you. Last man who faced him spent three months learning how to piss again.

Four men. Four legends. Sent in together because one Nexus had made three other bodies. Because real strength needed a real test.

The crowd finally breathed. Then roared.

"NEXUS! NEXUS! NEXUS!"

2. The Difficult Fight

Korr came first. Hammer down like a falling tower. The impact cracked the sand, sent a wave of white dust up. Sarea didn't dodge. He caught the hammerhead.

Real strength met real mass.

Stone under his feet turned to dust. His arm screamed. Bones that had Structural Integrity held. Muscles that had been rebuilt held. He bent his knees, took the blow, then shoved up.

Korr's arms snapped at the elbows. The hammer flew. Korr followed it, screaming, into the wall. He didn't get up.

One down.

The Twin Blades moved in. Spears flashing. No wasted motion. They aimed for joints. For eyes. For the places real strength didn't matter.

Sarea's real senses saw it all. Too slow. Too fast. He took a cut across the ribs. Not deep. The new skin held. He grabbed one spear mid-thrust. The brother holding it had the strength of ten men. Didn't matter. Sarea twisted. The spear shaft splintered. The brother came with it.

Sarea drove his fist into the man's chest. Not a punch. A press. Bones collapsed inward. The Twin Blades became one body with no breath.

Two down.

The Wall Varek didn't run. He walked. Each step made the sand shake. He grabbed Sarea by the throat with a hand like a shovel. Lifted him. Fifty thousand people saw Sarea's feet leave the ground.

"Real strength," Varek rumbled. Spit hit Sarea's face. "Let's see it."

Sarea smiled. Slightly more handsome. Slightly more monster.

He drove both thumbs into Varek's eyes. Not to blind. To find the sockets. Real senses meant he knew exactly where the bone was thin. Real strength meant his fingers went through.

Varek dropped him. Hands came up, clawing at his own face. Sarea didn't wait. He caught the giant's wrist, bent it backward until it cracked, then used it as a lever. Structural Integrity meant his back didn't break when he lifted seven hundred pounds of screaming meat.

He slammed Varek down. Once. Twice. Three times. Sand turned to mud. Blood. Bone.

On the fourth slam, the Wall stopped being a wall.

Four down.

3. The Brutal Victory

Silence.

Not crowd silence. Tomb silence.

Sarea stood in the center of the arena. Chest heaving. Tunic torn. Cut across his ribs bleeding slow. Not fast. Not dangerous. Real strength healed faster.

Around him: a hammer buried in a wall. A body with a caved chest. A giant with no face and broken spine.

The sand was red. Not from cuts. From ruin.

He raised his head. Looked at the high box. At Varric. At fifty thousand people who'd come for a fight and seen a slaughter.

He didn't raise his arms. Didn't cheer.

He just breathed. Click. Click. Turning the hawk ring with his bloody thumb.

Then the crowd remembered how to make sound.

Not a cheer. A roar. A prayer. A curse. All of it at once.

"MONSTER! MONSTER! MONSTER!"

But different now. Not fear. Worship.

4. The Legend

The gates opened. Not for him to leave. For scribes. For heralds. For men with ink and coin.

"Four veterans," one whispered, writing fast. "Four in one breath. Ironjaw. Twin Blades. The Wall. All dead. He didn't bleed. Not really."

Varric came down to the sand himself. No guards. For the first time, he looked at Sarea like he was looking at a storm, not inventory.

"Three silver, seven copper," Varric said quietly. "To this."

He gestured at the carnage. At the legend being written in blood.

"You're not worth two hundred silver anymore, Nexus. You're worth whatever I say you're worth. And today, that's the city."

He pressed a laurel into Sarea's bloody hand. Not gold. Iron. Twisted and black.

"The Slaughter of Four," Varric said loud enough for the crowd to hear. "Tell it. Sing it. Carve it in stone. The monster doesn't fight for coin anymore. He fights because nothing can stop him."

5. Ending Beat

Better room. Better food. A name. Two rings. A system. An owner. A knife. Seven bodies. Real strength. A legend.

Sarea walked out of the arena as the crowd chanted. He didn't look at the bodies. He didn't look at the blood.

In his head, the voices were quiet. Then the Scarred spoke, almost reverent:

"They'll tell this story when we're both dust, pup. Four veterans. One man. One slaughter."

Merek answered, satisfied: "Loud. Messy. Public. A statement. They'll never send four again."

Sarea flexed his hand. The iron laurel bent in his grip. He let it fall. It hit the stone and cracked.

Real strength.

The kind that made legends.

The kind that meant no one would ever look at him and see inventory again.

They'd see the monster.

And the monster was just getting started.
