Annabelle
"Doctor, will my dad be okay?"
I remember that day like it was yesterday. He bent down to eye level, and I saw the answer in his eyes before he uttered a word, taking my hand into his.
"We've done all we can, Sweetie. I'm sorry but we can't help him no more."
I can still feel the way my heart shattered in on itself when I heard those words, for some reason it hurt worse than dad's passing two days later.
'Unreliable humans', I mutter as I dive back into the water swimming hard, trying to push the pain away.
Dana
"Come in. "
I glance up as she walks in unfriendly as ever. She says nothing to me and walks over to our usual place.
"That's a first!"
Ten minutes later I'm seated across from her, watching as she watches the river flow.
"What is it you love so much about this view?"
Just when I conclude she isn't going to answer, she says, "I once lived beside a river… it was more like a very big brook", she laughs to herself, "I'd spend hours there with my da- -"
And she goes silent again.
"With your dad?" I gently prompt because she surely is in a mood I haven't dealt with yet.
She just gives me a look and goes back to watching the view. And that is how two hours went by — Annabelle watching the view, and me watching it with her.
