🌷 Chapter Four: The Sanctuary of Light
The forest stretched endlessly, veiled in silver mist. Elara's breath came fast as she ran beside Kael, her hand still in his. Every step echoed with fear — and something else, something bright and trembling: the rhythm of two hearts moving as one.
They reached an ancient stone archway hidden deep in the woods. Vines curled around it, and strange runes glowed faintly across its surface. Kael raised his hand, whispering in a language she didn't know. The air shimmered, and the doorway opened to reveal a soft golden light.
"Go," he said gently. "It's safe inside."
Elara hesitated only for a moment before stepping through. The world shifted around her — and suddenly, she stood in a vast hall carved from crystal and moonstone. Pools of light shimmered along the walls, and the air felt calm, sacred.
"What is this place?" she whispered.
"A sanctuary," Kael replied as he joined her. "It was built by the guardians of light long ago — a place untouched by shadow."
Elara turned slowly, awed by the gentle glow that surrounded them. "It feels alive."
"It is," Kael said softly. "It listens to your heart."
She walked toward a glowing pool and knelt beside it. The water reflected her face — but behind her reflection, faint wings of light shimmered. She gasped. "Kael… what's happening to me?"
He moved closer, his expression full of quiet wonder. "You're remembering who you were meant to be."
Elara turned to him. "And who is that?"
"The one who can restore balance to both our worlds."
She wanted to believe him — but fear trembled beneath her hope. "What if I'm not strong enough?"
Kael reached out, brushing a stray curl from her face. "Strength isn't something you're born with, Elara. It's something you find — when you choose to protect what you love."
Their eyes held. The soft light reflected in his gaze made her heart ache in the most beautiful way.
"I don't understand why I trust you," she whispered.
Kael smiled faintly. "Perhaps you don't need to."
A silence fell between them — warm, full, and unspoken. The glow from the walls deepened, wrapping them in soft gold. The air itself seemed to sigh.
Then Kael took her hand again, gently. "Rest now. The shadows cannot reach us here."
Elara nodded, feeling the exhaustion of the night settle in. She leaned against him as they sat by the shimmering pool, her head resting on his shoulder. His heartbeat was steady, grounding her in the calm.
For the first time since the night by the lake, she felt safe.
As her eyes fluttered closed, Kael looked at her — the girl who carried the light of the old magic — and a quiet promise formed in his heart:
He would protect her, even if it cost him everything.
