Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: Getting Hit by a Dump Truck is Main Character Treatment

Modern Day, Karakura Town, Tokyo——

"I'm dead?"

Kurosaki Ichigo watched as his own body was loaded onto an ambulance, leaving behind only a messy pool of blood staining the concrete path beneath the overpass. His pupils quaked, and he couldn't snap out of it for a long time.

None of the onlookers in the surrounding crowd gave him a second glance.

Because he was now a freshly-made "Whole"—more commonly known as a soul.

Ordinary people couldn't see him.

The only ones who could respond to him were other souls.

"Yeah. You died pretty miserably. Got sent flying dozens of meters by a dump truck and then run over. You were basically turned into a carpet."

The person speaking was sitting on the curb.

He wasn't old, maybe seventeen or eighteen. He had a slender, well-proportioned build—not too thin, not too heavy. He exuded an aura of calm.

If he were wearing a pair of black-rimmed glasses, he would have looked exactly like the harmless class bookworm. If he started lecturing with a serious expression, he'd be the type to make girls impatient.

However, that hellishly dark joke perfectly showcased his "sharp" side.

His eyes were exceptionally bright and piercing, giving off the strange impression that he understood a great deal, yet was somehow different from a typical scholar.

"Dammit, where the hell did that dump truck even come from? Also, please don't make me remember what I look like dead, I'm gonna be sick!"

The orange-haired teenager, who was about to start his first year of high school, had surprisingly good grades. But no matter how hard he racked his brain, he couldn't figure out how he'd gotten into a car accident right in front of a convenience store.

Even if it were premeditated murder, it would be difficult to get a dump truck into that position beforehand.

And it was even more impossible for it to crash into him without making a sound.

It was as if it had appeared out of thin air.

There wasn't even a driver in the truck.

It was a supernatural, paranormal event!

"Since you don't want to talk about how you died, let's change the subject... My name is Shigū. Shigū Takeru. I'm an incoming university student. Seeing as we're in the same boat, please look after me from now on."

Shigū Takeru stood up, casually brushing the dust off his clothes.

"Kurosaki Ichigo, an incoming high school student... You said 'in the same boat,' does that mean..."

Ichigo trailed off, hesitant.

"Ah, you weren't the only one hit."

Shigū Takeru admitted it frankly.

Transmigration methods are getting more and more high-tech these days, Takeru thought to himself. It used to be lightning strikes, now it's truck-kuns.

And he'd been hit twice.

The first time, he was eating hotpot and singing the birthday song when it seemed like a god in the heavens got a little too excited and sent him this "gift."

It had sent him to a version of Tokyo that was a bizarre mix of slice-of-life anime.

He'd become the young master of a rich conglomerate.

Relying on his status as a transmigrator, he had thrived since childhood, earning the admiration of everyone around him.

During summer vacation, he'd had a sudden whim to visit Chiba.

However, the gods seemed to have seen through his lustful intentions and dispatched another dump truck, forcibly changing his itinerary.

It had also changed Ichigo's fate at the same time.

All those overpowered bloodlines are useless in the face of a supernatural phenomenon from an upper-level narrator that doesn't play by the rules.

"Then again, if it weren't for this thing, I might have thought I wasn't dead. This feels completely different from the last time I died."

Shigū Takeru looked down at the lock and the half-broken Chain of Fate on his chest. He even flicked it with his hand, making a crisp sound.

The sound and texture were so bizarre that it gave him the uncontrollable urge to gouge the lock out.

"You keep saying things that don't make any sense. Isn't this the time when people are usually supposed to be sad?"

Ichigo took a deep breath.

"What's done is done, there's nothing to be sad about. Look at us, we're fine, aren't we? We just lost our physical bodies. It's not a big deal. Besides, this isn't necessarily a bad thing."

"Getting killed by a dump truck is main character treatment. Next, a goddess will probably show up to guide us to another world."

Shigū Takeru waved his hand dismissively. Just as he finished speaking, a strange, shoji-style door appeared out of thin air ten meters away, high above the sidewalk.

The door slowly opened, and accompanied by a fluttering indigo butterfly, a petite figure stepped out.

It was a young girl.

She wore a black kimono, her hair was in an "onion" style, and her delicate features and large eyes were cute. But the long sword at her waist and the dignified aura she carried gave her an indescribable air of authority.

"?"

"..."

There was no way they could miss someone this conspicuous.

—And the same was true for her.

If Takeru and Ichigo were merely drawn in by her strange appearance and powerful presence, then Kuchiki Rukia was stunned by the "aura" these two were emitting.

Coming from the Soul Society to the human world, which was lacking in spirit particles, anyone with even a tiny fluctuation of Spiritual Pressure (Reiatsu) should have stood out like a rare animal.

But standing in front of these two...

For a moment, she had the illusion that she hadn't left the Soul Society at all.

"Their unconsciously emitted Spiritual Pressure is naturally merging with the spirit particles in the atmosphere, changing the very feel of this place..."

In a situation like this, even if a Hollow appeared, it would probably ignore them instinctively.

Rukia's expression grew more cautious.

She landed on the ground, her hand on the hilt of her sword, and stepped toward the two. She showed none of the boundaries one would expect from a first meeting, acting as coolly and decisively as a law enforcement officer on patrol.

"Hey! Who the hell are you?"

Ichigo tensed up, took a step back, and questioned her loudly.

He completely missed the "See? What did I tell you? The goddess is here," expression on Shigū Takeru's face.

Rukia explained in a practiced tone, "Don't be nervous. I am the Shinigami (Soul Reaper) stationed in Karakura Town. I am responsible for sending the souls of the deceased to the Soul Society—the resting place for souls."

"—That said, I never expected to run into two souls with high spiritual power on my first day. You two should be glad I arrived when I did. If I had been any later, you would have definitely attracted a powerful evil spirit. And then you would have faced something far more terrifying than death."

"Shinigami? Soul Society?"

Ichigo was completely bewildered. He had just run into two weirdos in a row, and his brain was struggling to keep up.

"Do Shinigami have territorial protection, too? And you use a katana instead of a scythe? You wear a kimono instead of a robe? Wouldn't a foreigner who's religious reject this kind of image?"

The moment Shigū Takeru spoke, the tense atmosphere immediately relaxed.

"Of course not. Because I would graciously use 'coercive measures' and make them scram before they had time to complain."

Rukia was momentarily surprised, then puffed out her chest with righteous indignation.

She clearly had a trace of nobility about her, yet she spoke with the smooth, shameless tone of a wily veteran. It was impossible to argue with her.

"Wait, when you say 'scram,' you don't mean 'go to hell,' do you?! We don't even know if you're telling the truth! And a Shinigami is an elementary schooler like you? That doesn't sound very reassuring."

Ichigo frowned, his face full of suspicion.

"Silence! I am ten times your age. A human brat like you has no right to question my abilities. However, seeing as you both have potential and might one day become colleagues, I will introduce myself."

"My name is Kuchiki Rukia. You will come to understand the greatness of this name in the Soul Society."

"Hey, I haven't even said goodbye to my family...!"

Before Ichigo could finish, Rukia stepped forward with a strained smile, drew her sword with a shing, and struck Ichigo on the forehead with the hilt. He fell backward, enveloped by a white light that surged from the ground.

Next, it was Shigū Takeru's turn.

He didn't resist at all, as indifferent as someone letting a flight attendant fasten his seatbelt before takeoff.

After sending the two off, Rukia let out a small sigh of relief. She leaped onto the overpass and gazed out at the modern cityscape of Karakura Town.

Although she was suspected of being here just to "gild her resume," she was determined to shatter everyone's doubts with an impeccable service record and complete her stationing assignment perfectly.

"Speaking of which, I forgot to ask their names... Oh well. If they can graduate from the Academy and join the Gotei 13, we'll meet again sooner or later. By then, I should be a Vice-Captain. Or, at the very least, a high-ranking seated officer."

"That'll be the perfect time to let that yellow-haired brat feel the dignity of his senior, hmph... How dare he call me an elementary schooler!"
