Chapter 18 - Under Duress

"Hand over the phone to him.

'I have something to tell him,' George begged. His voice was exceptionally low. Kelly struggled to hear what he was saying.

"Who owns the phone?

I apologize in advance, but I may have to decline. When I last handed him my phone, he nearly smashed it against the wall. I may not be fortunate this time," Kelly declined. He wasn't ready for another episode with Conor.

The only reason he hasn't retaliated against Conor is George's state of health. He doesn't want to be responsible should anything bad happen to George.

"Do this for me, Kelly… Are there any other options available? The doctor says he will throw me out," George pleads further. He refused to get off the phone until he convinced Kelly.

Kelly saw a different version of his friend. Otherwise, Kelly would have denied that George was speaking if it were not for the voice.

"All right, I will give him the phone.

If he does not respond to me, though, I will leave your house and never return." Kelly agreed, but nothing without a silly condition. He's done babysitting Conor.

He would rather not put George in that vulnerable situation.

"Conor, your dad's on the phone. He wants to speak with you," Kelly called Conor's attention.

Kelly was still not convinced to give his phone to Conor again. He continues to pull his hand away every second.

Since Kelly and Conor's last encounter with George, Kelly has been cautious about making the same mistake twice.

With his back to Kelly, Conor took another shot of vodka to calm himself.

He seemed unwilling to speak with George because he had not complied with this demand in their last phone call.

"Is there anyone interested in speaking with me? I would rather not speak to anyone. I just want to be left alone," Conor turned to face the bar again.

At the time, he was only concerned with the bottle of vodka in front of him and not with his father, George.

"Does that sound right, in your opinion? You ain't acting like your Father is in trouble," Kelly attacked Conor. At this point, he is prepared for whatever may come for him.

Kelly would not have followed George's plan if he had been given the freedom to choose, especially considering the stress Conor had recently caused him.

"Is the call really that important?" At last, Conor turned back to face Kelly.

"He should seek other sources of support. I had a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to make amends with your friend, my father, but what did he do?" Conor continued to express his frustration. Already he was preparing to slam his fist into Kelly.

Kelly became aware of Conor's hand motion.

In a panic, Kelly retreated rapidly, realizing that Conor would soon smash his head with the vodka bottle he was holding.

"Why don't we just get this resolved so I can leave this hospital?" George put the phone on.

Unbeknownst to Conor, his father had been listening in on their conversation.

Conor complained, "We all know that you have always put Tony before me, even though I am your first son." Conor's search for the perfect excuse to avoid his Father's invitation keeps getting messier. .

"Should we do this now? And I thought we had talked about this before. Like I have said many times, Tony is not my favourite son. And if she had been available, I would not have called you. Will you be that way all the time?" George told Conor what his true intentions were. He made Conor understand that Tony has always been the first option.

George attempted to be truthful with Conor, but he only made matters worse.

"Very interesting! Just waited for you to be able to recognize it later. Now you can see that I was not your first choice. Now give me every reason to care." Conor reprimanded his father.

As he recommended to George, Kelly was now forced to step in and act as a mediator. "Are you prepared to take charge of your company once more and be treated with the best care? Or would you rather remain in the hospital for a while longer?"

"Is this supposed to be a query? Perhaps all you are doing is pulling me along." George started to get angry.

"Kelly, which side do you favour? I thought you were the best friend I had. George let out a moan." He was still unable to understand Kelly's meaning.

"You know I will be by your side no matter what. All I am trying to understand is that arguing with your son will not improve things.

Despite my knowledge of your regulations, guess what? The time has come for you to submit to Conor's demands. Remember that nothing is more important than your health in this world." Kelly had the best advice.

Kelly had an idea so brilliant it left Conor dumbfounded. He never saw that coming.

"I am interested in learning how you ended up leading such a miserable life. You are so smart that you are this poor and unhappy." Conor mocked Kelly's predicament.

Kelly waved it.

He acts as if he is not hearing Conor. He was only concerned with finishing the task he had come for.

With a command akin to a puppet, Conor told his father, "Be a gentleman and grant my request, and I will be there in a bit." He assumed command and had total authority over his father.

George, who was once lively, suddenly becomes a puppet due to his ambitious nature.

He would not have the guts to talk to Conor like that, much less in such a low voice, if it were not for his health problems.

"I am still awaiting your reply. That would be the last time I spoke to you if you dare to hang up." Conor cautioned his father.

"Check your bank account. Your account has been rectified by me. You can access everything I took away from you," George revealed.

"Are you kidding? Is it not one of your ploys to get me to go to the hospital?" Conor argued.

He had not yet figured out how George had accomplished that so quickly while they were still on the phone.

While still unsure, Conor's bank texted him. The notification indicated that his transaction had recently been processed again.

"I will be in the hospital right now," Following his bank's confirmation text, Conor reassured his father and hung up.

Kelly stated, "I will be in the car waiting for you when you are finished."

Conor called him back just as he was ready to leave. "Relax. I do not remember requesting that you go. You will remain right here while I go upstairs to get dressed."

"Kid, I do not see that happening. You do not have me as your maid.," Kelly said.
