Chapter 38 - chapter 38

Flashback

The coronation day

The world beyond the Inner Chamber felt like a dream I had forgotten how to dream.

For seven days, I had not seen the sky. I had not felt the gentle kiss of the mountain breeze, nor heard the warm, vibrant chatter of my people.

The only souls permitted inside were my father and the High Priest of the royal temple, who oversaw the solemn Rite of Succession.

The chamber itself lay deep beneath the bedrock of the palace—a sacred sanctuary carved from ancient jade, veined with veins of softly glowing gold. Countless runes covered the walls, pulsing with the residual mana of every sovereign who had come before me.

The air was thick, heavy, humming with raw power. It pressed against my skin, sinking into my lungs with every breath.

Seven days.

Seven days of absolute silence.

Seven days of reaching deep into my chest, cultivating every stray fragment of mana until my core burned in perfect, flawless harmony.

Seven days of preparing to carry the weight of an empire.

I could feel it resting inside me now—the Great Mana. Vast, ancient, and terrifying, it slept beneath my ribs like an endless, silent ocean. It held the courage of every king in our bloodline, the collective hopes of generations, and the unborn future of my people.

My father stood before me , neither of us spoke for a long time. Words felt too small for the quiet vastness of the room.

He raised his hands—his dark scales gleaming softly along his wrists—and placed them on either side of my face. His golden eyes searched mine, filled with an intensity that made my throat tighten.

"You have done well, Kael," he said softly. His voice, usually so commanding, was thick with pride. "You have borne the weight of our ancestors with honor."

"I only hope..." I swallowed hard, my voice trembling slightly. "I only hope I prove worthy of it."

"You already are." His thumbs gently brushed my cheekbones before his hands fell away. "The Great Mana would have rejected you otherwise."

I offered a weak, nervous smile. "I still feel as though my knees might give out before I reach the throne."

He let out a low, warm chuckle. "So did I."

I blinked, taken aback. "You?"

"I nearly fainted before my own coronation," he confessed, a rare, playful glint in his golden eyes.

"You are lying."

"I assure you, I am not. I was absolutely terrified."

A startled laugh escaped my chest, breaking the crushing tension that had gripped me for days. The great King of the Naga Realm... terrified. Somehow, knowing that the titan standing before me had once felt just as small made the air in my lungs feel a little lighter.

He placed a heavy, reassuring hand on my shoulder. "It is good to fear responsibility, my son. It means your heart understands its weight."

A heavy knock echoed against the massive stone doors. The High Priest bowed low in the threshold.

"Your Majesty. The people await."

My father held my gaze for one last second, squeezing my shoulder before stepping back. "They shall not wait much longer."

The attendants dressed me in absolute, reverent silence.

Layer after heavy layer of ceremonial silk settled over my shoulders—rich crimson and deep, gleaming gold, the colors of our royal lineage. Dragons woven in shimmering thread coiled down the broad sleeves, while tiny, dark blue-black scales flickered beneath the fabric like starlight on water.

The robes were heavier than anything I had ever worn, a physical reminder that crowns are never light.

An attendant carefully adjusted the golden sash across my chest, right over my thrumming core. Another knelt to fasten the polished arm guards around my wrists. When they finished, the High Priest stepped forward, bearing the Crown of the Crown Prince.

It was a delicate circlet of beaten gold, adorned with fine chains of jade beads that hung down like a shimmering curtain before my eyes, swaying with my every breath. At today's ceremony, this crown would be stripped away. In its place, the heavy Crown of Kings would settle upon my brow.

My hands were clammy. I quietly wiped my sweating palms against the rich fabric of my robes, praying no one would notice.

My father did. He caught my eye and offered a subtle, knowing smirk without saying a word, then he walked out to greet tye crowd.

*Of course he saw *I thought, suppressing a nervous smile.

The attendants bowed and retreated, leaving me alone in the small preparation chamber adjoining the grand courtyard.

From outside, the muffled roar of the celebration bled through the thick stone walls.

Music played. Thousands of voices cheered my name.

The sound should have filled me with pride, but instead, my stomach twisted into tight, agonizing knots.

*What if something goes wrong?

What if my core falters during the oath? What if I fail them all?

What if they look at me and realize I am not the king my father was?*

The terror spiraled, suffocating and fast, pulling the air right out of my chest—

A hand rested gently on the small of my back. Small. Warm.

I didn't need to look. The overwhelming knot in my chest unraveled instantly, replaced by a deep, aching relief.

A genuine smile touched my lips before I even turned around.

"Eryn."

I turned to face him, and for a fleeting moment, every trace of fear evaporated into nothingness.

He looked breathtaking.

A robe of pale gold silk draped elegantly over his frame, embroidered with delicate green vines that traced the hem and sleeves. Jade ornaments hung from his belt, catching the warm light with every subtle movement. His sandy brown hair was pinned back, leaving his face bare, and his dark, liquid eyes sparkled with a soft, captivating warmth.

He didn't look like a simple priest in training. He looked like something pure. Something divine.

"You are staring," he said, a quiet laugh escaping his lips.

"I can't help it," I murmured, my voice soft.

His cheeks flushed a delicate pink. "I spent an hour getting ready."

"It was worth every second."

"You look heavenly, my love."

"No, you do." I countered

His dark eyes slowly swept over my crimson and gold robes, taking in the grand silhouette of the naga prince. His smile widened, tender and full of admiration.

"No..." he whispered, taking a slow, deliberate step closer until the scent of crushed herbs and warm rain enveloped me. "You look... every bit the king."

Heat rushed to my face, my heart skipping a beat. "Careful."

"Why?"

"You're making me even more nervous."

"I thought I was supposed to be comforting you," he teased softly.

"You're failing spectacularly."

He laughed—that soft, melodic sound that had long become my favorite music in the entire world.

"I brought you something," he murmured, stepping back just enough to reveal a small porcelain cup resting on a wooden tray in his hands. Steam curled lazily from the amber liquid. "I asked the palace kitchens to prepare calming herbs. I know how much you love this blend."

My heart swelled with a sweetness so intense it almost ached. "You remembered."

"Of course I remembered," he said, his eyes searching mine with gentle devotion. He held the cup out to me. "I couldn't bear the thought of you facing today feeling overwhelmed. You shouldn't have to bear it alone."

A lump formed in my throat. The sheer weight of my love for him pressed heavily against my chest. "I don't deserve you, Eryn."

His smile softened, his gaze dropping for a fraction of a second before meeting mine again. "I could say the exact same thing."

Without a second thought, I took the cup from his hands. The warmth of the porcelain radiated into my cold, nervous fingers. The familiar, soothing scent of sweet chamomile and mountain tea drifted up, instantly comforting me.

I took a sip. Warm. Rich. Exactly as I remembered.

I took another long swallow, and then another, draining the cup until nothing remained.

Eryn watched me quietly, his eyes tracking every movement of my throat as I swallowed.

"Better?" he asked softly.

I let out a long breath, feeling the tension in my shoulders melt away. "Much better."

"I'm glad."

The quiet between us felt easy. Perfect. I set the empty cup back onto the tray and reached out, wrapping my fingers around his. I squeezed his hand tightly, unable to contain the hope burning inside me.

"When this ceremony is over..." I looked deep into his dark eyes, pouring every ounce of my soul into my words. "...I am going to stand before my people and introduce you. Not just as the man I love... but as the man I intend to rule beside for the rest of my life."

Eryn's expression softened.

For a tiny, fraction of a second... something flickered deep behind his eyes. A shadow. A cold, distant light that I had never seen before. It passed so quickly that I thought my mind was playing tricks on me.

"I know," Eryn whispered, his voice oddly flat. "I've been waiting for this day, too."

Suddenly, a strange, sickening wave of vertigo crashed over me.

My head throbbed. I blinked rapidly, but the room began to tilt.

I frowned, trying to pull back. *did i turn my head too fast? Is it the heat of the robes?*

I tried to plant my feet, but the polished marble floor felt as though it were melting beneath me. My limbs suddenly grew impossibly heavy, leaden and unresponsive.

"...That's... odd..." I slurred out, my own voice sounding muffled, as if underwater.

My vision blurred, dark spots blooming like ink across my field of sight.

Eryn didn't move. He didn't reach out to catch me. His gentle smile remained perfectly fixed, entirely unbothered by my sudden collapse.

"You look pale, Kael," he said softly.

"I..."

Another violent wave of paralysis slammed into my chest. My lungs seized. I gasped for air, but my chest refused to expand. The cup on the tray clattered as my trembling hand blindly reached for a nearby stone pillar, but my fingers slipped.

Panic. Cold, unadulterated terror flooded my bloodstream—not from the upcoming crown, but from primal, survival instinct.

"Eryn..." I gasped, sinking to one knee.

The porcelain cup slid off the tray, shattering violently against the cold stone floor into a hundred jagged pieces. The sharp sound echoed through the silent room like a death knell.

I forced my chin up, straining every muscle in my neck just to look at him.

Eryn stood over me.

The warmth in his dark eyes was completely gone. The soft, timid priest who had blushed at my compliments had vanished.

In his place stood a stranger—cold, calculating, and looking down at me as if I were nothing more than a beast caught in a snare.

My blood turned to pure ice. The betrayal hurt far worse than the poison burning through my veins.

"Eryn...?" I choked out, tears of confusion and pain burning my eyes. "Why...?"

Before he could answer, the heavy oak doors of the chamber exploded inward.

A dozen figures clad in high-ranking human priestly robes flooded into the sacred space. Blades were drawn, glittering in the dim light, and complex sealing spells were already flaring around their fingertips in bright, unnatural hues.

I stared at them, my heart shattering into a thousand pieces alongside the porcelain at my feet. Then, with the last of my strength, I looked back up at the man I had given my entire heart to.

And in that horrifying, quiet moment...

I realized my family had been right all along.

I had brought the monster right into the heart of my home.
