Chapter 303: Dialogue Between Two Worlds
Facing this series of highly technical questions, Valerie maintained a smile but answered very skillfully: "Lieutenant Saavik, regarding the specific teleportation theory, this belongs to the 'Magos's' core technological domain. My clearance and knowledge reserve do not allow for in-depth elaboration.
"We, as an exploration squad, are primarily responsible for executive-level matters.
"However, what I can confirm is that its principle seems fundamentally different from the warp technology you mentioned; it focuses more on identifying and traversing the 'folds' of dimensions themselves."
This vague yet information-rich answer caused the light of contemplation to flash in the eyes of both Carol and Saavik.
Differences imply a completely new knowledge system, which further stimulated their desire to explore.
Carol took over the conversation, trying to cut in from another angle: "Then, these... augmentations of yours? And the energy source utilized by your weapons and equipment, what is it? It doesn't look like traditional nuclear fusion or antimatter."
She chose her words carefully, her gaze sweeping over Maine's powerful metallic cybernetic limbs and Dorio's heavy exoskeleton.
This time, Maine answered simply in his low voice: "For mission survival."
He said no more, clearly unwilling to discuss their technical details too much.
Jackie took the opportunity to utilize his specialty. Grinning, he tried to ease the atmosphere and fish for information: "Hey, relax, Doctor, Lieutenant. We really are just unexpected visitors.
"Speaking of which, what exactly does this 'Project Genesis' of yours research?
"And that genetically augmented human named Khan the Admiral mentioned earlier... sounds like big trouble? Maybe we can swap some intel? After all, an extra friend means an extra path."
He cleverly bypassed the core of their own technology and shifted the topic to the other party's world.
Carol and Saavik exchanged a glance.
Saavik shook her head slightly, indicating that the secrets of "Project Genesis" should not be revealed.
Carol understood, so she focused on Khan. This part of the information was relatively more public: "Khan Noonien Singh, a genetically augmented human from Earth's dark history.
"He and his similarly augmented followers were defeated and exiled by Admiral Kirk fifty years ago due to their extreme aggressiveness and desire to rule.
"Now he has escaped his confinement, hijacked a starship, and attacked Federation facilities. His actions already pose a severe threat to interstellar security, and Admiral Kirk is doing everything in his power to hunt him down."
Inside the cavern, a dialogue spanning dimensions began.
On one side were Carol and Saavik, representing the top scientific rationality of the United Federation of Planets; on the other side was Maine's squad from the Cyberpunk world, who had experienced the cruel survival laws of the streets.
Both sides were cautiously testing each other's bottom lines, exchanging non-core information, trying to build a fragile but crucial bridge of understanding between them.
Carol enthusiastically began introducing the unique features of this cavern. While avoiding core secrets, she explained the preliminary connection between the energy flowing on the rock walls and "Project Genesis," and invited Valerie and the others for a limited tour of the permitted areas within this massive underground facility.
Saavik, however, maintained her calm observation and recording. Her tricorder continuously captured the energy spectrums and physiological signals emitted by Maine's squad members, as well as the unique physical effects produced when their equipment operated.
She noticed the member named Pilar, whose neural reaction speed and cyberoptic scanning modes far exceeded ordinary humans; and the pilot named Falco, whose dynamic perception and predictive abilities regarding the surrounding environment also displayed highly neuromechanical characteristics.
Rebecca showed strong interest in the tricorder in Saavik's hand, whispering to Pilar: "Hey, do you think that thing can scan the energy level in my cannon?"
Pilar nervously adjusted his goggles, trying to analyze the energy type of the other party's weapons.
Maine maintained a captain's vigilance throughout. He commanded his team members to stand guard in shifts—some communicating with Carol, while others continuously monitored the surrounding environment, especially that Federation teleportation platform and the only exit.
He knew that despite temporarily defusing the conflict, they were still in a classified facility of a strange and potentially risky alien world. True safety would only arrive the moment the portal reopened.
This unexpected contact continued in a subtle and fragile balance, under Dr. Carol's immensely expectant mood and Lieutenant Saavik's meticulous surveillance.
Two vastly different civilizations completed their first cautious handshake in this magnificent and mysterious underground cavern.
A few days later, the familiar teleportation light illuminated the cavern platform once again.
As the light dispersed, the figure of Admiral James T. Kirk appeared alone.
He was still wearing that crisp uniform, but his brow was shrouded in an unresolvable heaviness and exhaustion. His past sharpness seemed eroded by some immense sorrow, and even his steps seemed much slower than when he left.
Carol and Saavik, who had already learned part of the news through the facility's internal communications, immediately went to meet him.
The members of Maine's squad also stopped their respective activities, watching the returning Admiral alertly and silently. A solemn atmosphere permeated the air.
Kirk's gaze first swept over the crowd, confirming Carol and David were safe and sound, then he nodded slightly to Saavik, and finally looked at Maine, Valerie, and the others. His voice carried a trace of imperceptible hoarseness: "Things... have come to a temporary end."
He didn't describe the tragic process of the pursuit and battle in detail, only summarizing the outcome in concise and heavy sentences: "Khan... has been defeated. The 'Genesis Device' he stole... was detonated on a lifeless planet codenamed 'Planet Genesis'."
Speaking of this, he paused. The scene that shook the galaxy and reversed life and death seemed to float before his eyes again—violent energy sweeping across the entire planet, the earth reshaping, oceans surging, the breath of life bursting forth in an instant. A dead planet, under unimaginable mighty power, transformed into a vibrant new world.
That was supposed to be a great scientific miracle, but at this moment, it formed a cruel contrast with the massive void in his heart.
His voice lowered, carrying unconcealable pain: "But we... also paid a heavy price."
He took a deep breath, seemingly needing immense strength to say the next words. "Spock... in order to repair the warp drive damaged by Khan and ensure the entire crew of the Enterprise could escape the blast radius of Planet Genesis's explosion... he voluntarily exposed himself to lethal radiation..."
He didn't continue, but the deep sorrow permeating his weather-beaten eyes explained everything.
The final farewell aboard the Enterprise with his Vulcan First Officer, who was both a friend and a brother, their hands touching across the transparent aluminum bulkhead... the proverb, "Logic is the minimum requirement for reaching a logical conclusion, but many times, it is not enough," and Spock's final words, "Remember me," all turned into heart-wrenching memories at this moment.
Kirk chose to bid farewell to his best friend in a manner most consistent with Spock's ideals and contributions.
In the orbit of the newborn Planet Genesis, under the solemn gaze of the entire Enterprise crew, he placed Spock's remains into a photon torpedo casing and launched it toward that brand new planet full of infinite possibilities.
"I sent his remains into Planet Genesis," Kirk finally said, his tone carrying a resolute mourning. "There... is perhaps his best resting place."
After doing all this, handling the most urgent military affairs, and comforting the personnel, he forced down his grief and ordered the Enterprise to return, coming to pick up Carol, David, and Saavik who were left here.
