Chapter 7 - Policewoman Chief

Upon hearing Yang Chen say he would release the evidence he had received, the still-conscious bearded policeman immediately broke out in a cold sweat.

"You... you dare! Do you know who you've offended?! That's Boss Chen's son! Boss Chen's men will wipe out your entire family!" the bearded man roared, but the excruciating pain in his body made it impossible for him to stand!

Yang Chen's expression suddenly turned cold, "Boss Chen again... You guys are such losers! Don't you all know that I hate being threatened the most?" With that, he rushed forward and kicked the bearded man again. This kick instantly knocked him unconscious!

"Bang!"

Suddenly, the iron door of the interrogation room was flung open, and a figure rushed in at a swift speed!

"Stop!"

A crisp and stern voice reached his ears. Yang Chen turned around in confusion, but upon seeing the newcomer, his eyes lit up. This was a valiant policewoman with shoulder-length hair, almond-shaped eyes like autumnal lilies, a high nose bridge, and plump lips smeared with a light pink lipstick. At first glance, her face resembled some perfectly sculpted Japanese or Korean celebrity, but upon closer inspection, one could sense an inherent heroic spirit, several times more beautiful than those so-called celebrities. She was truly a stunning policewoman.

But Yang Chen then noticed that the policewoman's epaulettes were adorned with two four-pointed stars, the indicia of a second-level police inspector.

Instantly, Yang Chen realized that this young and beautiful policewoman, resembling a movie star, was actually the Chief of the West District Police Station, a bona fide Division-level cadre in China!

Cai Yan was in a terrible mood at the moment. She had just finished a meeting, fretting over the recent bank robbery in the West District, when she heard a report that a suspect had assaulted an officer in her own interrogation room. This was a blatant disrespect for her authority! "You! Hold your head with your hands behind your back and stand against the wall!" Cai Yan pointed at Yang Chen and shouted harshly.

Yang Chen looked him up and down for a moment, inwardly thinking that uniforms were indeed a good thing. No wonder so many people he used to be around would have their female partners wear various uniforms before doing things... Hearing the female chief's order, he smiled in disbelief, "Beautiful Chief, I think it would be best if you could take a look at this first." With that, he tossed the document in his hand to the female police officer.

Cai Yan wasn't a reckless person; otherwise, she wouldn't have taken the position of Chief of the West District Police Station at such a young age, no matter how strong her background was. So when she saw Yang Chen's calm expression, she felt something was amiss. Puzzled, she picked up the document and glanced at it briefly. Gradually, a layer of frost covered Cai Yan's handsome and charming face. After giving Yang Chen a fierce glance at the bearded and dark-faced police officer lying on the ground, she said to Yang Chen in an icy voice, "Sir, what's your name?"

"My last name is Yang, and my given name is Chen."

"I'm Cai Yan, the chief of the West District Police Station. I apologize to you for my subordinates' mistakes. However, you assaulted a law enforcement officer, so I must detain you. You have the right to remain silent and to hire a lawyer to defend you. If no one bails you out, you won't be released until at least forty-eight hours." Cai Yan finished speaking, and without waiting for Yang Chen to say anything, she immediately directed several police officers to carry the two unconscious people out of the room. Then, with a complicated look at Yang Chen, she slammed the iron door shut!

Yang Chen watched in disbelief as a group of people came and went, and he was still locked up. He couldn't help but smile bitterly. He couldn't even find a cell phone to call for a lawyer or bail. Who could he ask? It seemed he would have to stay in this small room for the full forty-eight hours. Outside the room, Cai Yan looked at Feng Biao, who had followed her, sweating profusely. She frowned and said, "Captain Feng, I will report your case truthfully during the monthly review. Just wish you the best!" With that, she left Feng Biao, his legs weak, behind and walked back to the office.

Cai Yan didn't stop to rest after returning to the office. Although she had only been a police officer for a few years, her keen sense of smell had always helped her solve many major cases. This time, she also smelled something different. She felt an inexplicable sense of oppression from this young man named Yang Chen. But he smiled so harmlessly, what was she afraid of?

Cai Yan was proud and liked the feeling of being in control, so she immediately began to mobilize the resources at her disposal, searching for files on Yang Chen. Cai Yan quickly retrieved Yang Chen's resume. Surprisingly, there was very little information about him. After just a quick glance, Cai Yan realized there were too many strange things about it...

"At the age of five, separated from his parents, he was taken abroad by human traffickers...adopted by a kindhearted couple...At the age of twenty-three, he graduated with a master's degree in marketing from Harvard University, returning to China the same year..."

At the end of this simplistic, seemingly crude resume, there was actually a photo of Yang Chen and Harvard University President Drew Faust on campus. Harvard's iconic red buildings and the eye-catching school emblem were visible. In the photo, Yang Chen exuded a scholarly air, smiling brightly alongside Faust.

Of course, the photo in the police database wasn't photoshopped, but Cai Yan still felt like she'd been tricked. A Harvard master's student be damned! Would a Harvard graduate actually be selling lamb skewers in a market?! And what about being adopted by a kindhearted couple? What happened after that? There were over a decade in between, so how could it jump straight to university graduation? But Cai Yan quickly calmed down. Naturally, no one would tamper with the police database without authorization. Every person's profile was added by the authorities themselves. Since Yang Chen's profile, which was clearly riddled with loopholes and ridiculous, existed, there had to be a reason for it. But why would the police brass include such a resume?

Cai Yan quickly thought of two possibilities: First, Yang Chen's identity was very special, a state secret, such as a security bureau agent; second, Yang Chen's identity was also very special, but he was a special individual that the state didn't want anyone to know about...

Cai Yan quickly ruled out the first possibility. If he was a security bureau agent, his profile would have been detailed and impeccable, so as not to arouse suspicion. Therefore, Yang Chen could only be a very special individual, so special that the brass wouldn't reveal him, nor would they specifically cover up for him, treating him as a mere facade.

It's undeniable that Cai Yan was not only a police officer and a beautiful woman, but even more so, a woman with a burning curiosity! Cai Yan naturally took notice of someone with this kind of status. Almost instantly, in Cai Yan's mind, Yang Chen became a bandit, an internationally wanted criminal, a drug lord in the Golden Triangle, a mad scientist, and so on. One thing was certain—Chief Cai was interested in Yang Chen!

Just as Cai Yan was pondering how to investigate this suspicious individual's background, there was a knock on the door.

"Come in."

A fair-faced young police officer entered with a flattering smile. In the minds of the officers, their chief was not only a stunning beauty, but also a figure reminiscent of Nun Miejue. They quietly reported, "Chief, Lawyer Zhang from the Chengdong Law Firm is here to bail out the prisoner named Yang Chen."
