"Discipline is not about endurance. It is about remembering what breaks you — and choosing to stand anyway."

---

The training hall King had converted beneath the Hall of Justice was unlike any other.

No gravity chambers. No holograms. No gadgets.

Just stone, silence and an unspoken understanding that pain was the only teacher that never lied.

King stood in the center, his casual clothes somehow more intimidating than any armor.

Superboy faced him, his chest rising and falling with controlled tension.

An inhibitor collar gleamed faintly on his neck. It contained his Kryptonian power within him.

"You said you wanted to be more than his reflection." King said flatly. "Let's see if you can bleed for that idea."

Then he moved — too fast for even Wally's eye to follow.

A blow like a freight train struck Superboy square in the chest, sending him through three training dummies and into a reinforced wall. Dust clouded. The inhibitor collar hummed.

Superboy coughed, glaring up. "You said you'd train me — not kill me!"

"If you die from a slap," King said calmly, "you were never alive to begin with."

He gestured toward the collar. "That thing will suppress your natural advantage until your body learns to function at full potential without power. You want freedom? Earn it."

The Crucible of Growth

King didn't stop at Superboy.

His eyes turned toward Aqualad, who stood waist-deep in a conjured pool formed by his Water-Bearers. "You claim control," King said. "Prove it."

King snapped his fingers.

The pool expanded, swirling into a vortex.

The calm surface became an ocean in miniature, violent and thrashing.

"Guide it." King ordered. "Don't fight it — command it."

Sweat formed on Aqualad's brow as he struggled to keep his bearings. The water responded like a beast testing its leash, slamming into invisible walls of willpower.

King watched, silent, until finally the vortex slowed — reshaped — and then calmed into a spiraling sphere that floated in serene motion above Aqualad's hands.

"Good," King said. "Now hold that for the next two hours."

Aqualad nearly fell over. "Two hour?!"

King didn't blink. "Power is patience. Lose one and you lose both."

The Trial of Speed

Wally's turn.

He grinned nervously as King dropped a crate of weights beside him.

Each band was forged from Bismuth.

"Those look heavy," Wally said. "Be honest, are they—"

"They weigh as much as your ego." King replied.

Before Wally could protest, King strapped them to his wrists and ankles.

His arms and knees buckled instantly.

"Run." King said.

Wally gawked. "Run? In these? I can barely move!"

"Then crawl," King said. "And you're not eating until you circle this arena five times."

"Wait, what?!" Wally sputtered. "Five times?! On—on what calories?"

King tilted his head. "Efficiency begins where indulgence ends."

Aqualad couldn't help smirking despite his predicament. "Perhaps it is time the fast one learned patience."

"Not funny, water boy!" Wally yelled, trying to take his first step — and collapsing again.

The Mind of the Detective

Tim sat cross-legged before King, surrounded by dozens of holographic monitors — all flashing coded messages, riddles and simulations.

"Scenario seventy-four," King said. "You have thirty seconds."

The monitors displayed a city block under siege — civilians screaming, two bombs armed, a sniper unseen.

Tim's fingers flew across the virtual interface. "Sniper's thirty-two degrees northeast, rooftop access. Civilian evacuation in progress—bomb two disarmed—"

"Too slow," King interrupted. "You saved seven. You killed thirty."

Tim looked up, startled. "What?"

King rewound the simulation. "You focused on success. You didn't listen to failure. It was warning you."

Tim exhaled shakily. "Run it again."

King's expression barely shifted, but there was something almost — proud — behind his stillness. "Good. Learn to fail faster."

The Watching Shadows

Beneath the Earth, in the sterile halls of Project Cadmus, the remnants of another kind of intelligence stirred.

A lone scientist — thin, pale, and trembling — stood before a massive holographic projection.

The air shimmered with distortions — silhouettes formed of photogenic interference, shifting like light through static.

The Light.

"We've confirmed," the scientist said, his voice breaking. "King has taken direct interest in the young metahumans. He's… training them."

The distortion pulsed faintly, voices merging into one cold harmony.

"It does not matter."

"But—sir—his methods—he's making them stronger than predicted."

"That too," the Light replied, "is part of the equation."

A pause. Then a feminine tone, sharp as a blade:

"Children sharpen themselves. We only decide which way the edge points."

The scientist swallowed hard. "Then what do we do?"

"Wait," the Light whispered in unison.

"Even kings cast shadows."

---

Back in Washington, King watched his students from the edge of the training floor — expression unreadable.

Superboy lay exhausted on the mat, collar sparking faintly. Aqualad knelt, controlling the final swirl of water. Wally was crawling, half-starved, still defiant. Tim's eyes blazed with focus.

King's faintest smile surfaced.

"Let the world raise heroes." he murmured. "I'll raise survivors."
