Chapter 1 - First Bell Of The Day!

The first bell of the new school year echoed through Maplewood High, bouncing off the lockers and the walls plastered with club posters. Students streamed through the hallways in a chaotic current of chatter, backpacks, and squeaky sneakers.

Among them, Lila Chen, a quick-witted junior with a knack for noticing the smallest details, navigated the crowd like a fish through water. She clutched her schedule, eyes scanning for Room 203. Next to her, Ravi Patel, her best friend since middle school, fumbled with his locker combination, muttering under his breath.

"Need a hand?" Lila asked, smirking.

"Only if you promise not to laugh," Ravi said, finally twisting the lock open with a victorious click.

Behind them, Jasper Morales, the star of the soccer team, leaned against a locker, tossing a football in one hand and scrolling through his phone with the other. He didn't notice Maya Thompson, the new student, standing awkwardly by the entrance. Her bright green backpack looked like it had been chosen in a panic the night before, and she scanned the hall nervously.

Lila spotted her first. "Hey, you look lost," she called. Maya's eyes widened, grateful for the lifeline.

"Uh… yeah, first day," Maya admitted, shifting from foot to foot.

Before Lila could answer, a shrill whistle cut through the noise. Principal Hawthorne stood on the steps of the main hallway, clipboard in hand.

"Attention, students!" he barked. "Welcome back to Maplewood High! New year, new opportunities—but remember, no running in the halls, and no food fights!"

Some students groaned. Others snickered. Lila rolled her eyes. Somewhere in the crowd, Ethan Kim, always ready with a sarcastic comment, whispered, "So much for my plans to start a hallway food fight."

The bell rang again, sharper this time. Lila glanced at her schedule, saw that her first class was Advanced Literature with Ms. Davenport, and groaned. At least she had Ravi to complain to. But even as she walked away, she couldn't shake the feeling that this year wasn't going to be ordinary. Something in the air felt… charged, like the school itself was waiting for something to happen.

And maybe it was.
