Faye's POV
The sharp sound of mocking laughter from one of Hillary's men cut through the tension, but the throbbing ache in my skull drowned out everything else. My trembling fingers worked their way beneath the wooden lid, fighting against every instinct that screamed at me to stop.
The box creaked open with an ominous scraping sound.
A crushing wave of energy erupted from within. The force slammed into me with such violence that my sight went completely blank. Nausea twisted through my gut while my knees threatened to give way. I gripped the edge of the cot desperately, refusing to let the box slip from my grasp. The very air around us seemed to vanish, as though the tent had been sealed in some invisible vacuum.
This time, the overwhelming sensation didn't affect me alone. Sharp gasps echoed through the cramped space from Hillary, her soldiers, and even Selena. The oppressive weight bore down on every person present. Someone let out a string of curses.
