Kermit's POV
I couldn't ignore the way my Beta's jaw clenched, as if he was fighting to keep certain words locked behind his teeth.
My attention shifted to Maximus. "None of this adds up. We're sworn enemies. What made him believe she was under my protection?"
"Perhaps he was simply acting irrationally, sir," Maximus replied with a casual shrug.
I turned away from both of them, my forehead creasing with frustration. This was the worst kind of puzzle - knowing pieces were missing but having no clue what they might be.
I closed my eyes and forced myself to concentrate. To dig through whatever memories remained intact. But the harder I pushed, the more my skull felt like it might split open.
Tonia was nothing to me. The only history between us consisted of moments where she had caused me pain. She had never shown me an ounce of kindness.
Just as her image filled my thoughts, her actual voice drifted over to me, as if my mind had somehow summoned her into existence.
