Tonia's POV
The sound of Alpha Kermit's name made my stomach drop like a stone.
My chest tightened with a mixture of emotions I couldn't untangle. Worry battled with resentment as we rushed through the hospital corridors.
"What exactly happened to him?" I pressed the doctor as we approached the elevator bank.
"Knife wound. The blade was laced with poison."
My eyebrows shot up. Someone had tried to kill him? The thought sent an unexpected chill through me.
The elevator doors slid open and we stepped inside. The silence stretched between us as we waited.
"Couldn't one of the other physicians handle this?" The words came out sharper than I intended. I wasn't trying to avoid him necessarily, but surely there were other qualified doctors available. He was probably suffering while they waited for me.
"We offered," Chaim replied with a slight shrug. "He specifically requested you."
My pulse quickened. That made absolutely no sense.
