Relief washed over me as my shift finally drew to a close. The entire day had been tainted from the moment I used my abilities on that mysterious patient, and all I craved was the sanctuary of my own bed and the oblivion of sleep.
My feet carried me past his room almost involuntarily. I couldn't resist stealing a glance through the small window, my curiosity mingling with dread.
Had he already exposed my secret? The question gnawed at my insides like acid. How had he even recognized what I truly was? The memory of his knowing gaze sent chills racing down my spine.
My pace slowed to a crawl when I spotted Ariya stationed outside his door, deep in conversation with another physician. Their hushed tones made my pulse quicken, though I couldn't decipher their words from this distance. Every fiber of my being screamed danger.
What if he had confessed everything? What if they were already plotting the most efficient way to apprehend me?
