Chapter 4 - The Weight of Two Lives

The room was silent except for the soft hum of the air conditioner. Darkness lingered beyond the window, the city lights glimmering faintly. The glow of the bedside lamp cast warm reflections across the marble floor.

Arjun—or Aarav, as the world now knew him—sat on the edge of the bed, staring at his trembling hands.

The memories of his last moments replayed like shards of glass—his mother's wheelchair spinning, her terrified eyes, the truck's blinding headlights—and then, nothing but darkness.

He gritted his teeth, voice cracking."Mom… what happened to you…?"

The blue hologram shimmered faintly before him, as if it sensed his grief. Then, a soft, calm tone echoed inside his mind—J.A.D.E.'s voice.

"Your mother's soul has moved on peacefully, Arjun. Her suffering ended instantly. I know this truth is painful—but it is also mercy."

He froze, his breath catching. "She's… gone? Then what about me? My body?"

Tears began to fall, silent and uncontrollable.

"Destroyed beyond repair. That life, that form, no longer exists. You cannot return."

Aarav stayed like that for several minutes, unmoving, lost between disbelief and numbness. Even J.A.D.E. chose silence.

Finally, when he spoke again, his voice was raw, but steadier."Then what should I do now? Why am I actually here?"

"Because you asked for life, Arjun Rao," J.A.D.E. replied gently. "And the God of Justice heard you. You wished for one more chance—to live and deliver justice. This vessel was empty, abandoned by its former owner. The balance of karma allowed your soul to inhabit it."

He clenched his fists, his voice bitter."Then what am I supposed to do? Live like him? Party? Waste money? Or just kill the people who ruined my life?"

"No," J.A.D.E. said, her tone turning firmer. "You are to fulfill the mandate of the Ultimate Justice System. You will act where justice fails, defend those crushed by corruption, and punish those who mock the law. This system exists to balance karma through action."

A faint glow appeared again—the holographic window.

Aarav frowned. "What's that? Life span—one day? Meaning I'll die after one day?"

"Yes," J.A.D.E. said lightly. "If you don't earn Karma Points and exchange them for life… ha, ha."

Aarav stared at the floating text, his pulse quickening."So I die in 24 hours unless I earn Karma?"

"Affirmative," J.A.D.E. replied, voice soft but emotionless. "Think of Karma as both your moral currency and your fuel for existence. Fail to act justly… and this body will perish, as the previous one did."

He swallowed hard. "That's insane…"

"Reality often is," J.A.D.E. murmured.

His eyes scanned the glowing list, stopping at Divine Skills."What are those? What will they do?"

"They are the gifts bestowed upon you by the God of Justice. You may recall."

Another smaller window flickered to life.

Arjun read the glowing words slowly, almost reverently. His fingers passed through the projection, unable to touch it."These… powers? Why me?"

"Because your heart cried for justice even when the law failed you. The God of Justice rewards sincerity, not perfection. These abilities are extensions of your intent—to uncover truth and expose deceit."

He shook his head. "And what if I fail?"

"Then your body will expire when your life span reaches zero."

Arjun laughed bitterly. "So I'm a time bomb with a law degree. Great."

"Not a bomb," J.A.D.E. countered. "A chance."

He looked toward the window, where the night slowly faded into the first blush of dawn. The weight of two lives pressed down on him—his mother's loss, his failure, and this strange second chance.

He whispered, barely audible,"You wanted justice, Mom. You always told me to fight for truth… maybe this is how I'll do it."

"That," J.A.D.E. said softly, "is the correct beginning."

Arjun exhaled, his jaw set. "Fine. Then tell me what I have to do to earn Karma Points."

"Simple," J.A.D.E. replied, her voice calm and crystalline."Karma Sources:• Upholding truth and justice (+)• Exposing or preventing corruption (+)• Causing or ignoring injustice (–)• Family Legacy (+) — Aarav's final wish."

"To survive, and to fulfill your purpose—you must act. Every just deed restores balance… and every hesitation steals time."
