Chapter 9 - Very unfair

Ava shrunk back in her seat, trying to process the words of the doctor.

Charlotte on the other hand just stared at the doctor's face not saying a word.

The news of Aurora having terminal disease hit them both like a bomb.

She was very young to have terminal disease.

Different things rammed through Ava's heart, she didn't even say anything nor did she move.

Charlotte also didn't say a word, she knew exactly what was going on, she knew that it was Aurora's fate and destiny.

She was gonna die at a very young age. Which seemed very unfair.

"Doctor which disease to be precise?" Charlotte asked after moments of silence.

The doctor looked at Ava's weary face and heaved a dejected sigh.

"Leukemia, stage 4, I'm really sorry there's nothing we can do about it, diagnosis were late". The doctor explained.

Ava's face remained pale, she didn't say anything nor did she cry, she just stared ahead.

"I advise you to use this time to be close to her and spend your last moments with her well, you can bring her to the hospital so we can put her on medications that'll make her last for some weeks" The doctor said trying to encourage them.

Ava stood up from where she sat and headed out without saying a word.

"Thanks doctor we'll be on our way" Charlotte said standing up and shaking hands with the doctor.

"Anytime, please make sure you bring her here on time so we can help her manage it for some weeks" the doctor reminded her again.

"We sure will" Charlotte said and went out of the doctor's office, following Ava slowly from behind.

She didn't want to talk to Ava for that moment fearing that she might break down in the hospital.

They walked like that till they reached the car, Charlotte thanked the security guard for watching over Aurora who was quietly seated in the car waiting for them.

Charlotte got into the drivers seat, with Ava's current state of mind, she definitely wouldn't allow her to drive.

Immediately they both got into the car, Aurora began with her questions.

"What took you guys so long?? And where's my surprise?" She asked pouting her lips.

"I'm sorry baby we were talking with the doctor, don't worry you'll have your gift as soon as we get home" Charlotte said to Aurora.

"Mummy why aren't saying anything?" Aurora asked while peeping at Ava from the back seat.

"Your mummy is really tired, why don't you leave her to rest for a bit?" Charlotte said to Aurora again hoping to distract her from asking Ava too many questions.

"Okayy" Aurora said and sat down in the backseat, her eyes transfixed to the front.

Charlotte drove the car out of the hospital's parking lot, straight to the road.

On their way back home, Ava was lost in deep thoughts, so was Charlotte.

Ava was really heartbroken, she couldn't still believe that Aurora was gonna be no more.

The more it sounded like a joke, the more it dawned on her that it was the reality of life.

Charlotte on the other hand was wondering why Aurora would have to die all of a sudden.

The more it sounded real, the more it sounded strange.

Charlotte peeped through the mirror to look at Aurora and found out she was fast sleep on the chair.

She secretly heaved a sigh of relief, at least she was going to stop being inquisitive.

They got down from the car after Charlotte parked the car in Ava's parking lot.

Ava got down from the passenger seat in front and opened the back door to gently bring Aurora out of the car.

Ava took Aurora upstairs to her room while Charlotte locked the car doors before joining them inside.

After Ava made sure Aurora was sleeping soundly, she closed the door to Aurora's room and went downstairs to meet Charlotte.

"What are we going to do?, because I'm not going to let my daughter die like that"

Ava said speaking for the first time they left the hospital.

Charlotte was deeply troubled as she saw Ava's worried face.

She knew that something could be done but she didn't want to share it with Ava because she knew that Ava could do anything at all.

In as much as she loved Aurora, she couldn't watch Ava do anything rash.

The only way that Aurora was going to live was for Ava to share her life into half, thereby giving Aurora part of her health and retaining the other half.

Now Charlotte knew that Ava was a white wolf and she needed her full health to survive, if it was a normal wolf, the effect would have been lesser.

"There's nothing we can do, it's her fate" Charlotte said.

Ava yanked Charlotte by the tip of her blouse and said to her face.

" Don't you dare tell me there's nothing that can be done, you know how much she means to me, I can't let her go just like that".

Charlotte looked at Ava's eyes, she could see pain, despair and anguish, she was really sad.

Charlotte felt moved to tell Ava that there was a way, but she decided against it because she knew that it was not her fate to die young but Aurora's.

"You can't change fate Ava, no matter how hard we try, that's her fate."

Charlotte said patting Ava by the hands she used to hold Charlotte's clothes tightly.

"But why her?, she's too young to go through all this" Ava asked Charlotte finally breaking down in tears.

"The only thing we can do is to help her manage it and also spend as much time as we can with her" Charlotte said to Ava trying to console her.

Charlotte bent down to hug Ava who was sobbing heavily. She tapped her on her back reassuring her that everything was going to be okay.

The news of Aurora's illness didn't go down well with Charlotte, after all Aurora was her goddaughter too, but there was nothing she could do.

"Ava we have to admit Aurora in the hospital, so they can manage her illness". Charlotte reminded Ava.

Ava smiled through her tears and said "Even in death she's still strong".

Charlotte just smiled and didn't say anything, instead she just continued rubbing Ava's back.

"We have to tell her about her illness tomorrow!" Ava suddenly said.
