Chapter 55 - Chapter 55: Infernal Currents

As we stepped cautiously into the next chamber, the air immediately grew heavy with a strange, oppressive magic. Water pooled across the floor, reflecting the flickering light of our wands. I barely had time to take in the room before a loud crash echoed behind us—a massive iron gate slammed shut, trapping us inside.

Salazar growled under his breath. "A trap. Of course it is."

I nodded, scanning the room with my enhanced senses. Something was off—the magical energy here was… dampened. My fire spells flickered weakly, sputtering as I cast them.

"Fire spells are weak," I muttered, feeling the frustrating resistance as my first inferi lunged at us. Their decayed bodies moved with unnatural speed, a thousand tiny whispers of death hanging in the air.

Salazar's eyes narrowed. "Water, dampened magic… Inferi. This is a nightmare."

We moved into position, backs close, shields overlapping. The first wave surged forward, skeletal hands clawing, teeth snapping, their numbers overwhelming. I summoned all my magical energy into my wand, drawing upon the fragments of souls I carried. One was the spirit of a formidable adult from another world, the other an extraordinarily talented young witch. Their power coursed through me, bolstering my spells far beyond ordinary limits.

"Salazar," I hissed through the whispering wind charm, "these Inferi won't die with normal fire. I need to push everything I have."

He nodded sharply, understanding immediately. "Then burn them out. I'll cover your flank. Don't underestimate the sheer numbers."

I drew a deep breath and began casting, mixing a variety of fire spells—modified versions of existing charms, spells I'd invented, even early prototypes of Fiendfyre. My wand flared with energy as I poured soul power into it, the flames twisting unnaturally blue and crackling with feral intelligence.

"Protego Diabolica!" I shouted, the spell erupting from my wand in a massive blue fiery raven. Its wings spread across the chamber, sweeping over the Inferi like a tidal wave of searing flame. Skeletal limbs burst into ash, bodies disintegrating before they even reached us.

Salazar grinned, his dark curses and slicing hexes thinning the horde from another angle. "Finally, some fire I can appreciate!" he growled, blasting through a line of Inferi with Shadow Lance, shattering skulls in a spray of necrotic energy.

We moved as a synchronized pair—he with deadly precision, I with overwhelming magical output. Still, the Inferi kept coming. Water hissed where my flames hit the floor, creating steam that clouded the chamber and made aiming more difficult.

"I can't hold this forever!" I shouted, dodging a skeletal arm that shot out of the steam. My reflexes—enhanced by the cat-like agility I purchased from the system store—allowed me to twist out of its grasp mid-flight. "Salazar, focus on clearing the center! I'll collapse their outer ranks!"

He barked an order in response, sending a whirlwind of cutting dark bolts through the ranks of Inferi, scattering their formation. The room was chaos—a blur of fire, water, necrotic energy, and clashing magic. Steam rose, the Inferi shrieking as they burned or disintegrated, and still more surged from hidden recesses of the chamber.

I felt my energy pool running high—dangerously high—but I couldn't afford to stop. Concentrating, I expanded Protego Diabolica, feeding it all the souls I had access to. The blue fiery raven grew enormous, wingspan nearly filling the chamber, its eyes glowing with malicious intent. The Inferi screamed in unison, their forms evaporating into ash as the raven struck them one by one.

Salazar's voice cut through the noise, sharp with urgency. "Watch your back! More are coming from the left corridor!"

I twisted, sending the fiery raven spinning to intercept the new wave while conjuring a pillar of molten rock from the chamber floor to block them. Steam hissed and water sprayed into the air as magic collided with magic, creating a storm of heat and pressure that made the chamber feel alive.

"Too many!" I yelled, sweat dripping despite the chill from the water. "We need a plan or we get overwhelmed!"

Salazar gritted his teeth, firing a chain of shadow spears that detonated on contact with the Inferi. "Plan? The plan is survive! Keep firing, and don't let a single one touch you!"

I narrowed my eyes, calculating, my mind racing through spell combinations. With a final surge, I merged the blue fiery raven with a crushing gravity spell, creating a devastating column of flame and force that swept the remaining Inferi from the chamber. Bones splintered, ash flew, and water boiled violently around us.

When the last Inferi fell, the chamber was silent—save for the hissing steam and the sound of our heavy breathing. Salazar leaned against the wall, smirking tiredly. "You know, for once, I actually like your crazy ideas. That was… effective."

I wiped sweat from my forehead, my wand still humming with residual energy. "Effective, yes—but we need to move. This room is too dangerous to linger. More traps and guardians are bound to follow."

Salazar nodded, gathering his own energy. "After that onslaught, I agree. But… admit it. That was fun."

I shot him a side glance. "Fun? If by fun you mean nearly being drowned by water magic while fighting a literal army of the dead… sure. Fun."

We shared a tense laugh, both of us acutely aware that the tomb's dangers were far from over. But we also knew that together, our combined magical genius—and a little bit of reckless creativity—made us nearly unstoppable.

The next chamber awaited, and I could already sense it would test us even more…
