The air was thick with the scent of scorched earth and ozone, the jungle trembling under the force of dragon fire. Three weeks of painstaking tracking had led us here, to the entrance of Herpo the Foul's tomb, and now we were facing a threat far beyond anything I had anticipated.
Salazar and I had just finished checking the wards when a jet of molten fire streaked toward us. Reflexively, we raised shields. The magical barriers flared and sizzled under the heat, distorting the air around them.
"By the Serpent's tongue, that's no ordinary guardian!" Salazar hissed, eyes narrowing as the massive black dragon roared, smoke curling from its nostrils. Its scales glistened like obsidian, eyes glowing with ancient intelligence.
"I know that!" I snapped back, heart hammering. "We're not dying here today!"
The dragon lunged with terrifying speed. I pressed my cat-like reflexes to their limit, flipping backward as its claws raked the ground where I had just stood. I barely had time to cast a protective ice wall, the cold searing the air and hissing as it collided with the dragon's fiery breath.
"Seraphina, on the left!" Salazar shouted, firing a volley of dark curses that hissed through the air. One exploded against the dragon's side, leaving a smoking crater.
"I see it!" I yelled, casting several barriers in quick succession, weaving them like a cage around my position. "I'll try the water sphere on its head—if I can submerge it, maybe we can gain control!"
Salazar's eyes widened. "That's risky! Its fire will incinerate the sphere if you hesitate!"
"I know!" I shot back, channeling my reserves. A massive orb of water surged into existence around the dragon's head, forcing it to rear back in a deafening hiss. Its thrashing claws tore through the canopy, snapping trees and sending debris flying.
"Move! Move! Don't give it a chance to strike you!" Salazar barked, charging forward to cast a cutting spell at its legs. A searing blade of magical energy sliced through the air, hitting the dragon's leg with a sickening crack. It roared, staggering but not defeated.
"I'm trying to hold it!" I shouted over the chaos, sending a barrage of rock bullets at the creature. Each impact left deep dents in its hide, but the dragon's fire still licked dangerously close.
"Seraphina!" Salazar shouted again. "Its tail is coming around! Don't let it hit you!"
I twisted midair, letting the reflexes granted by the cat-like enchantment guide me. The tail struck the ground where I had just been, shattering stones and sending dirt into the air. I rolled into another position, launching a modified Bubblehead charm, the orb of water expanding around its head.
"It's drowning it!" I yelled triumphantly. But my exhilaration was cut short as the dragon snapped its neck violently, breaking part of the orb. Water splashed everywhere, soaking me and Salazar.
"Damn it!" Salazar growled, firing multiple dark curses in rapid succession. "We need to finish this before it recovers!"
"Agreed!" I cast a powerful series of icicle spikes directly at its chest, channeling my magic to make them jagged and sharp enough to pierce the thick scales. "Keep it distracted!"
Salazar's eyes narrowed. "I'm not letting it touch you, Seraphina! Watch its head!"
The dragon twisted toward me, claws slashing as I ducked behind a sudden wall of rock. I could hear the crushing impact of its talons against the stone, feel the vibrations through the ground. My heart was racing, my mind processing a dozen spells and counters simultaneously.
"Seraphina, now!" Salazar yelled, shooting a concentrated curse at the dragon's throat. Smoke and sparks erupted as it howled, staggering backward.
I seized the moment, channeling more energy into the Bubblehead sphere, this time expanding it with precision around the head while sending icicles flying into its legs and wings. The dragon struggled, gasping, water spilling from its nostrils, and I could feel the immense magical energy radiating from it.
"We've got it weakening!" I shouted.
"Yes, but it's not done yet!" Salazar countered, his voice tense. "Keep it trapped, I'll hit it with everything I've got!"
"On it!" I sent a barrage of rock bullets, dark energy spikes, and magical chains that wrapped around its wings, pinning them as best I could. The dragon roared one final, deafening cry, struggling against the restraints, thrashing wildly.
Salazar drew a deep breath, his hands glowing with dark energy, and fired a devastating combination of curses straight into its chest. Sparks erupted, scales shattering, the sound deafening.
I focused, my cat reflexes guiding me as I moved between attacks, casting icicle shards, dark bursts, and rock projectiles. Slowly, the dragon's movements grew sluggish. Its wings flapped weakly, smoke billowing from its nostrils, and its massive body slumped.
Finally, with one last coordinated strike—Salazar channeling dark energy into its chest while I crushed it with a final barrage of ice and rock—the dragon collapsed, the ground shaking under its weight. The air was thick with heat, smoke, and the scent of scorched jungle.
We both stood panting, covered in dirt, sweat, and magical residue, our wands still raised in case the dragon had any last tricks. For a long moment, silence fell, broken only by the soft hiss of cooling fire and the distant calls of jungle creatures.
Salazar leaned against a tree, breathing heavily. "That… that could have gone horribly wrong."
I wiped sweat from my brow, feeling my heart still pounding. "You think? I nearly became dragon food a dozen times. But… damn, that was exhilarating."
Salazar scowled. "Exhilarating? You enjoy near-death experiences too much, Seraphina."
I smirked, adjusting my grip on the Elder Wand. "Maybe. But admit it… we make a pretty good team."
He groaned but nodded, scanning the fallen dragon. "Aye… but don't let this make you overconfident. Herpo's tomb is still ahead, and if this is the guardian, I shudder to think what's inside."
I took a deep breath, looking toward the shadowed entrance of the tomb. "Then we better be ready for anything. No more surprises, no more underestimating what's waiting for us."
Salazar's green eyes glinted. "Agreed. But first… let's make sure this dragon stays down."
As the heat of the battle cooled and the dust settled, I couldn't help but feel the thrill. This was exactly the kind of dangerous, magical chaos I lived for—and I knew Herpo's tomb would be nothing compared to the challenges ahead.
