I walked up behind Maggie and stopped there. My gaze settled on the two platforms she had for a rear, round like a pair of overgrown peaches.
Without turning, her voice rolled out.
"What are you doing?"
I shrugged, though she couldn't see it.
"Are you disturbed by my presence?"
She glanced sideways, only halfway, then faced forward again and said nothing for a couple of seconds. When she finally spoke, it came slowly.
"I vaguely remember the time before I met the Cardinal who brought me into the church. She was a generous woman. An epitome of love, the kind I looked forward to emulating. At some point I think I worshipped her more than I did the King of Kings himself."
She seemed to shudder.
"Time was not kind to her..."
I smiled.
"Time is not kind to anyone."
She glanced back at me and frowned.
