Chapter 8 - Chapter 8: This Should Work

Youyu realized that maybe it doesn't matter what he does, and what he says might not be incredibly important either.

Anyway, as long as he stands there, the maid's good impression seems to naturally increase...

No wonder, being too handsome does have its troubles.

But the maid hides it well, and you can't see any signs of her fondness increasing from her face, which led Youyu to think the system's module might be malfunctioning.

However, shortly after getting to know the maid, Youyu discovered he was overthinking. Because the maid didn't have intentions to hide anything; she's just a typical expressionless face.

After all the questions were asked, the maid closed her little notebook, unhurriedly.

"That's all I wanted to ask," she said.

That's it?

Youyu didn't mean anything else; he just found the questions a bit strange for an interview—none seemed related to the job he was applying for.

Youyu asked, "So... have I been accepted?"

"I don't know." The maid shook her head.

"Huh?"

"Because I'm not the manager, what I say doesn't count," she stated, calmly and matter-of-factly. "I'm still in high school; I'm just helping out during the holidays."

Youyu: "..."

Damn!

Were you playing with me just now?

But at times like these, you must maintain a smile.

"Oh, I see," Youyu asked. "Is the manager around?"

The girl shook her head like a rattle.

"Gone out," she said. "Out of town, not here temporarily. But I can call him to ask."

"...Then I'll trouble you for that."

The girl turned and went into the warehouse at the back. Youyu leaned against the glass counter, aimlessly scanning the card packs in the store.

Before crossing over, the cards in these stores were just decorations for players, like scene props. Only NPCs could use them; players couldn't read them even if they bought them.

But now it's different for Youyu. As an NPC, he can use the cards here. He's already decided to come back and open packs if he has money later.

Hmm... once I have money.

Since the manager isn't here, Youyu doesn't have much hope for the position either. He's already planning where to find work next.

Unexpectedly, the maid returned quickly, bringing good news: "The manager said you can stay."

"Huh?" Youyu was taken aback. "He didn't ask any questions?"

"Nope," the girl said. "He said to let you try it out and discuss once he's back. He told me to guide you for now, to get familiar with the work."

"And my job is..."

"Just help me," she pointed to the nearby bar. "Sometimes customers come for coffee; when there are many, I get too busy... You can make coffee, right?"

Youyu nodded: "A little."

Dad taught me in Hawaii...

... Oh, this is Yugi's world, never mind.

"Alright then."

The girl gestured for him to follow her, leading him through layers of shelves. Youyu found a red wooden door installed in the most inconspicuous corner of the store.

"Here, you have meals and lodging included, but the wage won't be high. There's no pay during the trial period, and you'll have to negotiate the formal salary with the boss when he's back."

"Okay." Youyu nodded while following behind.

He wasn't expecting much in terms of salary anyway. He came here mainly for meals and lodging...

... Okay, maybe also hoping for a discount on cards.

The girl opened the wooden door, revealing a long staircase that stretched into dark obscurity due to poor lighting and visibility.

"The room is up there," she said. "I live on the third floor—I like staying higher up. Both rooms on the second floor are vacant; you can choose any. I'll get you the key."

"Alright."

Walking along, Youyu suddenly thought of something: "By the way, I don't know your name yet."

"Chinai, Ito Chinai," she said without turning her head, "Just call me Chinai."

She led Youyu to the second floor. Youyu casually chose a room, opened the door, and was met with the stifling smell of mold, like opening a cellar sealed for years.

The room wasn't spacious, just a bedroom and a narrow bathroom. Morning light filtered through the single small window, where dust particles danced freely in the air.

Ito Chinai stepped back and pinched her small nose.

"The environment is a bit lousy because no one has been here for a long time."

She seemed genuinely sorry about the dorm's condition for the "junior."

"... If you don't mind, I can help you tidy up after the store closes tonight."

Youyu waved: "It's alright, I can handle it myself."

After pausing briefly, he asked, "More importantly... is it really okay for me to move in just like that? I mean, the manager hasn't even seen me... I mean, we haven't even spoken by phone."

While speaking, the two had already exited the room and started going downstairs.

"No worries." Ito Chinai said calmly, "Although he might hassle you a bit when he's back, he wouldn't directly kick you out. The manager is actually a decent person; if he has any flaw... it's the saying 'sharp tongue but soft heart.'

"Oh? So even though he speaks harshly, he treats people well?"

"No." Chinai shook her head, speaking calmly, "I mean, he acts harsh, but his mind is all focused on eating tofu."

Youyu: "..."

Don't fool me; I haven't read many books, does 'sharp tongue but soft heart' mean that??

So, does it mean this manager is a per... um... gentleman?

But hearing such words from an expressionless pretty girl... it does sound odd.

"By the way, if you're working, you also need to change into work attire." Chinai paused, suddenly remembering something, and turned her head to look at Youyu.

"There's some spare clothing in the warehouse; not sure if the size suits you..."

Youyu instantly became wary.

Work attire? What kind of work attire?

Could it be that he has to wear a maid outfit too?

This is different from what was agreed upon; he just came for the food and lodging, not to sell out his dignity.

Fortunately, moments later, Chinai returned with a men's dress suit.

White shirt, black waistcoat, and bow tie. Wearing this outfit made Youyu feel like a bartender in a movie, only he was responsible for coffee instead of alcohol.

The maid stood before him, helping to pat down the creases on the clothes, skillfully tying the bow tie and tidying his collar.

Then she stepped back two steps, tilting her head and examining for a while, finally nodding like a satisfied artist before their completed masterpiece.

[Good impression +5]

Youyu was already numb to the notification popping above her head...

Chinai seemed quite pleased with the junior, nodding to herself, "Good, it should be usable."

Youyu: "?"

Hold up, little sis, clarify what you mean.

You say what's usable?
