OPEN — THE DAY HUMOR SHOULD NOT EXIST
EXT. FUNERAL GROUNDS – DUSK
Black cloth. White ash. Slow drums.
The body of the fallen Elder is wrapped in sun-thread and stone-leaf. The city is quiet in the way only grief can demand.
Everyone stands still.
Everyone except SEFU.
He squints at the ritual bowl.
Leans toward the person next to him.
SEFU (whispering):Be honest. If I trip into that, do I become sacred or just embarrassing?
The person moves away.
SEFU nods.
SEFU:Fair.
SCENE — FIRST STRIKE (GAMIWE)
GAMIWE stands at the front. Stone-still. Ancient. Unforgiving.
She doesn't turn.
She knows.
GAMIWE:If one more sound comes out of your mouth that is not grief,I will personally teach your shadow how to behave.
The crowd stiffens.
SEFU raises his hands.
SEFU:Noted.Shadow etiquette class. Long overdue.
Gamiwe finally turns.
Her eyes could end civilizations.
GAMIWE:You laugh because you are afraid to sit with silence.
SEFU opens his mouth—
GAMIWE:Do not.
He closes it.
Three seconds pass.
He opens it again.
SEFU:Okay but in my defense—
GAMIWE:You do not get a defense at a funeral.
She gestures.
Two guards step forward.
GAMIWE:Remove him.
The drums do not stop as Sefu is dragged away.
SEFU (being hauled):For the record, I am grieving.I just grieve… aggressively.
CUT — SECOND STRIKE (T'LARU)
INT. STONE CORRIDOR – CONTINUOUS
T'LARU waits. Arms crossed. Jaw tight.
The guards shove Sefu forward and leave like they don't want to be part of this.
T'Laru doesn't yell.
That's worse.
T'LARU:Do you have any idea what you did while I was gone?
SEFU:Statistically? No.
T'LARU:You mocked a mourning chant.
SEFU:I hummed. Respectfully.
T'LARU:You laughed during the silence.
SEFU:That one slipped.
T'LARU:You asked if the Elder's spirit "gets frequent traveler benefits."
Sefu winces.
SEFU:Okay. That one might've needed editing.
T'Laru steps closer.
T'LARU:People died.People chose to die.
Sefu's smile falters—just a crack.
He shrugs it back into place.
SEFU:Yeah.That's why I'm joking.
T'Laru grabs him by the collar and slams him against the wall.
Stone shakes.
T'LARU:You don't get to outrun pain with noise.
A beat.
Sefu doesn't joke.
Just once.
SEFU (quiet):Watch me try.
SCENE — THIRD STRIKE (THE ABSENT AUTHORITY)
EXT. FIRST FARM – NIGHT
An older man waits by a fire. Scarred. Stern. The Chief's brother. The one who stayed behind. The one who hears everything late and remembers it longer.
Sefu kneels. Forced this time.
CHIEF'S BROTHER:While I was away, you turned grief into spectacle.
SEFU:I prefer "interactive tragedy."
The man sighs.
Deep. Tired.
CHIEF'S BROTHER:You dishonor the dead.
Sefu looks up.
SEFU:No.
Silence sharpens.
SEFU:I dishonor the idea that silence is the only way to care.
The fire pops.
The elder stands.
CHIEF'S BROTHER:You will clean the funeral grounds. You will sleep outside the walls. And you will not speak in ceremony for seven cycles.
Sefu grins.
SEFU:Joke's on you.I'm terrible at listening quietly.
CUT — PUNISHMENT MONTAGE (COMEDY THROUGH CONSEQUENCE)
– Sefu scrubbing stone while elders stare– Sefu trying not to talk, failing immediately– Gamiwe correcting his posture with a staff– T'Laru giving him the Look™ repeatedly– A child laughing at Sefu getting yelled at, then getting yelled at too
FX:Muted drums. Snorts of laughter suppressed. One crow that absolutely has opinions.
SCENE — THE NEAR-BREAK
Late night.
Sefu sits alone outside the walls. No jokes now. Just stars.
Kura approaches quietly.
She doesn't scold.
She sits.
KURA:They're angry because they loved him.
Sefu nods.
SEFU:I know.
KURA:Then why—
SEFU:Because if I stop laughing,I start counting who's next.
That lands.
Kura doesn't answer.
She just stays.
FINAL MOMENT — THE TITLE EARNS ITSELF
Gamiwe watches from a distance.
She speaks—not to him, but to the night.
GAMIWE:Some bells ring to warn. Some ring to mourn. And some…ring because they are cracked.
Sefu looks up.
Smiles, soft this time.
SEFU:Guess which one I am.
The Moon slides behind cloud.
Only then—
TITLE CARD:"A BELL THAT WON'T STAY SILENT"
Now it makes sense.
