Chapter 4
The walls of the laboratory were still trembling.
The echo of the explosion rippled through the steel beams, resonating against the darkened walls. Shadows coiled around Kai, slowly retreating as if he hadn't just survived a battle, but been born from one.
But this birth was anything but silent.
The system's voice no longer sounded mechanical it felt alive.
[Energy Level: 78% – Stabilization Initiated.]
[New Level: Shadow Sovereign.]
[Status: Entering Synchronization Phase.]
When Kai opened his eyes, the shadows no longer obeyed him they belonged to him.
With every breath, darkness rippled outward, the energy pulsing through his veins shaking the shattered glass around him.
But along with that power came an echo familiar, yet disturbingly intimate.
"You forgot me, Kai… but I was always here."
Kai turned his head.
A silhouette was forming out of the shadows.
It had no face, yet its shape mirrored him perfectly.
The same stance. The same tone. Only colder.
"You're… my dark reflection," Kai whispered.
The silhouette smiled.
"Wrong. I'm your essence. You're the shell. The system deceived you suppressed me. Now, balance must be restored."
Kai's shadow rose from the ground, taking shape.
Two Kais two different souls one human, one the echo of darkness stood face to face in the center of the lab.
Even the rain outside seemed to hold its breath, waiting for this confrontation.
Kai clenched his fists.
"If this power was born from me, then I will control it. Not you."
"Control? No, Kai. You're the one being controlled. The system is using you. That so-called 'mission' it's your chain."
The words echoed inside his mind.
For a moment, Kai hesitated the system's orders, warnings, rewards… were they truly his own will?
Or was this voice telling the truth?
At that instant, a hologram flickered back to life:

[Warning: Consciousness duplication unstable.]
The floor began to quake.
Lights burst, shadows spiraled upward.
Kai's eyes flashed blue the same as Nyreth's.
The shadow form spoke again:
"Now do you see? You and I… we are the two halves of Nyreth."
Kai's breath caught in his throat.
"What the hell are you talking about?! Nyreth is my enemy!"
"No. Nyreth is your missing half. By trying to destroy him, you destroyed yourself. Now the time has come to choose: will you be a child of the system… or of the darkness?"
The system's voice cut in, stronger now:
[Warning: Consciousness corruption detected.]
[User: Kai – Mission data conflict identified.]
[Emergency protection protocol activated!]
Kai's body filled with light but this time, the shadows didn't retreat.
Light and darkness clashed within him, waging war through every cell.
For a fleeting moment, Kai spoke with two voices:
"I am… not a prisoner of the system…"
"I am… born of the darkness…"
The ground split open beneath him.
Below, an immense network of cables and glowing blue cores pulsed feeding the system's heart.
Kai realized: Zenith Laboratory wasn't just a facility. It was the birthplace of the system itself.
And that heart… was now fueled by darkness.
Kai fell to his knees, black energy dripping with his sweat.
The system's voice distorted, now blending into two tones:

Kai remained silent.
His eyes were closed, but his mind was a storm.
Memories flooded through him his first encounter with Nyreth, the symbols in the tunnel, the echoes within the lab…
They all pointed to one truth.
"I won't choose either," he said finally.
"I'll be neither the system's slave nor the darkness's puppet. I'll carve my own path."
The shadow form growled.
"That path will destroy you!"
Kai opened his eyes.
The Pulse of Shadow beat once more within his chest.
But this time, the rhythm was different no longer synchronized with the system's voice, but entirely his own.
He took a step forward.
The distance between him and his shadow narrowed.
Raising his hands, Kai activated both the Shadow Pulse and the Shadow Echo simultaneously.
Light and darkness collided within a single body an explosion of energy shattered the lab and pierced the sky.
The shadow form screamed, its voice echoing through Kai's mind:
"This is only the beginning! I will be reborn with you!"
And then… everything fell silent.
Only the heartbeat of the shadow remained.

When Kai opened his eyes again, the laboratory was unrecognizable.
The floor was torn open, steel beams wrapped in living shadows, and everything around him had transformed.
Reality itself had bent this place was no longer Zenith… nor the city.

Kai rose to his feet and looked around.
Flickering neon lights shimmered in the dark; the city had become a reflection of itself, a mirror of shadows.
Buildings stretched like black mirrors, each reflecting fragments of forgotten memories.
In a shop window, he saw his reflection — but this time… Nyreth stood beside him.
Both of them stared in silence.
"So, we finally stand on the same ground," Nyreth's echo said.
"You can't escape merging with me now."
Kai clenched his fists.
"Maybe I don't need to escape. Maybe understanding you is the only way to defeat you."
Nyreth's silhouette glowed faintly.
"Then seal it in blood. When shadow and light unite, the system's chain will break."
Kai gathered the Shadow Pulse into his palms.
As the shadows spiraled and blue sparks danced around him, a quiet sense of peace washed over him.
For the first time… he wasn't afraid.

Kai closed his eyes.
Blue light filled his body, merging with the shadows.
The world around him began to dissolve again this time upward, toward the sky.
An energy storm erupted, tearing the lab's roof apart.
The sky was gray.
But instead of rain, shadows fell glowing embers raining down.
Each droplet etched a new symbol into the ground, rewriting the system's ancient code.
Kai lifted his head and whispered:
"If this city is to be reborn through darkness… then I'll be the one to define its meaning."
The system remained silent for a moment.
Then a new line appeared:
[New Mission: "Rewrite the Code of Darkness."]

[New Threat Detected: Codename – Seraphis.]
Kai drew a deep breath.
The shadows gathered behind him; before him, a new war was beginning.
But this time, he wasn't alone the darkness was no longer against him.
It spoke with him.
He looked up at the sky.
His eyes were no longer purely black or blue they were both.
And in that instant, he understood:
This was no longer a story of survival.
It was a story of rebirth.
