----------
The night wind moved through the canopy, cool and unhurried.
Noah nudged the leaf cup across the air between them. The makeshift vessel glowed faintly green under the moonlight, the amber wine inside it catching the light and releasing a rich, warm scent.
The man across from him stood without moving. He did not look at the cup. He simply let the breeze carry it until it drifted to a stop in front of him.
His dark blue hair stirred lightly in the wind. His brown skin looked rigid in the moonlight, and the eyes that moved to study Noah held no readable emotion, only a quiet, measured scrutiny.
Acnologia was not surprised that Noah had named him. He had sensed Irene's presence from the moment he arrived, and Irene's presence made his identity a short logical step. What did surprise him, slightly, was that knowing who he was had done nothing to change Noah's posture. Most people who understood what the name meant did not sit quietly on tree branches and pour wine.
"Are you not afraid of me?"
"Why would I be?"
Noah picked up his own cup and took a sip. "Stella produces excellent wine. A shame some people don't have the fortune to find that out for themselves."
Acnologia said nothing. He had lost his sense of taste when the last of his human self had given way to what he had become. He did not particularly miss it.
Noah's gaze drifted down toward the city below, the palace still lit against the dark. When he spoke again, his tone stayed light.
"The legends say that wherever the Black Dragon appears, destruction follows without exception. And yet you arrived here tonight and did nothing. You concealed your aura. You watched." He tilted his head. "Could it be that you saw the girl you failed to protect four hundred years ago, and whatever is left of your humanity pushed back against the rest of you?"
Something shifted in Acnologia's eyes at the mention of Sonya. It was small and brief, and then it was gone, swallowed by the same stillness that had been there before.
"Humanity," he said. "That fragile, useless thing. I let go of it a long time ago."
Noah swirled the wine in his cup, an unhurried smile on his face. "If that were true, you would have done what the legends describe. You would have sunk this island into the sea, Sonya along with it. The fact that you are sitting in a tree instead says something different."
Acnologia's voice dropped.
"Are you trying to provoke me?"
Each word came out with a deliberate weight, pressing down on the space between them. The killing intent that rose with it was not subtle. It was tangible, thick enough to feel against the skin, and it hit the surrounding canopy like a physical force. Branches splintered. Leaves turned to dust. The air itself let out a low, strained sound under the pressure.
It reached Noah and stopped.
Not deflected. Not resisted. Simply gone, as though it had dissolved the moment it touched his presence. Noah did not move. His clothes did not stir. He poured himself another cup at the same unhurried pace as before.
"Not really."
He set the bottle down and with a quiet flex of his hand, the shredded branches and scattered leaves reformed around them, the canopy reassembling itself back to what it had been. He looked up at Acnologia, and something in his expression had shifted from idle curiosity to something more pointed.
"I am simply wondering why I have not sensed the slightest trace of killing intent from you, the Dragon King himself, since you arrived."
A pause.
"And you are considerably weaker than I expected. If this is the extent of your current power, then Zeref and the Fire Dragon King have been far more cautious about you than the situation warrants."
Acnologia's pupils moved.
The killing intent receded slowly, like a tide pulling back. When he spoke again, his voice was not quite as hollow as it had been, and there was something underneath it that was more complicated than silence.
"You are right that I cannot conceal my own power at the moment."
A bitter smile crossed his face. He reached out and picked up the cup Noah had sent floating toward him, and drank it in one pull.
Noah stared at him.
He had pushed the conversation in that direction to test a suspicion, nothing more. He had not expected this. He had not expected something that looked, for a moment, almost human.
And what had he meant by at the moment?
Noah's expression sharpened. His hand moved before the thought finished forming. He closed the distance between them in an instant and pressed five fingers flat against the man's chest.
Acnologia had not expected it either. The calm that Noah had maintained since the start of their conversation had given no indication of this. He pulled Magic together in the half-second available to him, and azure light bloomed across his body.
It did not matter.
The Magic that rushed up to meet Noah's Magnetic Field Power was like paper held against a current. It came apart without resistance, and the force behind Noah's grip drove straight through it. A mouthful of blood came up, and Acnologia stumbled back several steps before steadying himself.
Noah released his hold and stepped back. He had no interest in continuing the attack. But the confusion on his face was real, and his eyes had not left the man across from him.
"You are not a Dragon Slayer."
He said it slowly, the way someone says something they are still working out as they speak.
He had known something was off since the beginning. Now he understood what it was. There was no Dragon Power anywhere in this man's body. Not suppressed, not dormant, not hiding. Simply absent. Dragon Power was the fundamental marker of a Dragon Slayer, the quality that separated someone who had genuinely been trained by a Dragon from someone who simply used magic that resembled it.
A man who had existed for over four hundred years as the most feared Dragon Slayer in the world should have been saturated with it.
What Noah felt instead was a vast reservoir of ordinary Magic Power and, of all things, traces of healing magic underneath everything else.
"Who are you?" Noah asked.
The man pressed one hand to his chest and exhaled slowly. When he finally spoke, the words came out with the weight of someone who had been carrying them for a very long time.
"My real name is Kuro. Acnologia is the name of the Dragon that destroyed my home."
He paused. "The Dragon I spent years trying to kill used the Dragon Soul Technique to enter my body while I was still young. It implanted Dragon Slayer Magic into my memory, the Dragon Slayer of Nothingness, and then it used my hatred, step by step, to shape me into what I became. I did not know it was there."
"Four hundred years ago, I infiltrated the Dragon King Festival. The Lightning Dragon King helped me access certain records the Dragon clan had kept hidden. That was when I finally understood that the creature I had been hunting my entire life had been living inside me the whole time."
He did not finish the sentence. He sat down on the branch and looked at nothing in particular.
He did not need to finish it. Noah already knew what had come next. Acnologia, once it had what it needed, had taken full control, driven Kuro's consciousness down into the dark, and begun the slaughter that nearly wiped the Dragon race from the world.
It was the same method the Crystal Dragon Animus had used to possess Sonya. The same cruelty, the same violation, only on a scale that made Animus look small.
"Could I have another drink?"
Kuro's voice was quiet.
Noah still had questions. Several of them. But he did not ask them yet. He shaped a wide bowl from the material around him using his Magnetic Field Power and filled it from the bottle.
The forest was still. The city lights burned in the distance below them.
The wine was good. It was not enough.
