Brighton wanted to take a trip.
He suggested it.
"Just the two of us," he said over breakfast. "Somewhere warm. Somewhere we can be completely alone."
I wasn't surprised because obviously, it seems this is the first time he's ever Inlove.
"Where were you thinking?" I asked.
"Caribbean. Private villa. No one around for miles. Just us."
I sipped my coffee. Calculated.
A trip meant complete immersion. No hotel room to retreat to. No excuses for space.
But it also meant seeing how he operated away from Montana. His patterns. His vulnerabilities when he felt safe.
"Okay," I said. "When?"
"Next month. I'll arrange everything."
He looked so pleased with himself. So sure of us. Of me.
He had no idea I was cataloging every detail. Every offshore account number I'd glimpsed on his laptop. He took every phone call in another room. Every moment, he thought I wasn't paying attention enough.
I was always paying attention.
