Month Eight Since Elena Woke
Patricia called me with news.
"One of Brighton's frozen accounts showed activity."
My heart jumped. "Where?"
"Montana. Small town called Whitefish. Someone tried to access the account electronically. The bank flagged it immediately."
"So he's in Montana?"
"Maybe. Or he's routing through Montana to cover his tracks. The FBI is looking into it."
"The same FBI that closed his case?"
"They reopened it. Just for this. If we can pinpoint his location"
"We can finally end this."
"Exactly."
I hung up and immediately called Margaret.
"Is Elena there?"
"She's in her room. Why?"
"I need to talk to her. It's about Brighton."
"She won't want to hear it, Damien."
"Just tell her it's important."
Five minutes later, my phone rang. Elena.
"What do you want?" Her voice was flat. Cold.
"Brighton tried to access one of his frozen accounts. In Montana. The FBI is investigating."
Silence.
"Elena?"
"Which account? Which bank?"
