After a brief conversation with Katori Sora, Chiyari Iba began to relentlessly pitch the advantages of the 3rd Division to Shinji Hirako and the others.
These students had all learned Shikai before graduation and were rare talents. She didn't want to miss the opportunity to recruit them.
"The 3rd Division is a support squad. We don't have many daily tasks, but whenever an emergency occurs, the support of the 3rd Division is indispensable."
"Joining the 3rd Division is the best choice for all of you. Here, you can get better training to help you grow faster."
"My apologies, but I will be going to the 6th Division after graduation," Sōjun Kuchiki declined.
"My path is also set. I have to go to the 2nd Division after graduation," Nozomishin Ōmaeda also refused.
Both of their families had been established in their respective divisions for many years; they wouldn't rashly switch squads.
Chiyari was well aware of their situations and was not surprised. She turned to Shinji and the others. "What about you four?"
"The 3rd Division doesn't have a captain yet. I, the vice-captain, am currently acting as the captain. You are all Professor Katori's prized students with extraordinary potential. As long as you gain some experience in the 3rd Division, your chances of being promoted to captain in the future will be very high."
Chiyari began to paint a rosy picture for the four of them.
"I'm going to the 11th Division. Captain Kenpachi Kuruyashiki already invited me during the live blade competition," Jin'emon Tsubaki said, scratching the back of his head.
Captain Kuruyashiki had been very sincere, personally inviting him after the competition, and Jin'emon had already accepted his invitation.
"Not many daily tasks in a support squad..." Kana Azashiro was a bit tempted.
Fewer daily tasks meant more opportunities to slack off, which meant more chances to go to her professor's place for meals!
"Sorry, my intention is the 9th Division," Kensei Muguruma said.
"I'll probably be going to the 5th Division. The vice-captain of the 5th has already invited me in advance," Shinji Hirako said.
Kensei and Shinji, full of ambition, both wanted to go to divisions that currently lacked a captain.
The 3rd Division was actually a good choice, but seeing that Kana was interested, they decided against it. There was a significant shortage of captains at the moment, with many divisions lacking one. There was no need for them to all crowd into the same squad and compete.
Chiyari also noticed that Kana was interested and pressed her advantage. "The 3rd Division doesn't have that many tedious daily tasks. We have the most vacation time in the entire Gotei 13."
"I'll join the 3rd Division!" Kana agreed. "Vice-Captain Iba, I'll be in your care from now on!"
"Welcome to the 3rd Division!" Chiyari's face lit up with joy. She turned to Sora. "Thankfully, the academy's exam mission was issued by the 3rd Division this time, allowing me to be the first to invite your disciples."
Sora smiled. "You're too kind, Vice-Captain. After Kana joins the 3rd Division, I'll have to ask you to look after her."
Sora approved of his disciples' thinking. Going to a captainless division was indeed an excellent choice.
When the group returned to the Spiritual Arts Academy, they found many captains and vice-captains there.
They had all received the news that the students had completed their exam and had rushed over to recruit them.
However, they soon heard that most of them had already made their decisions.
Hearing that Shinji and Kensei wanted to go to the 5th and 9th Divisions, the members of those squads were overjoyed.
Ginrei Kuchiki was also present today. He approached Katori Sora and said gratefully, "Professor Katori, thank you for looking after Sōjun. If not for your intervention this time, he would have been in grave danger."
Sora smiled. "Sōjun performed very well in this exam. You have taught your son well, Captain Kuchiki."
"Not a single one of them wants to come to the 8th Division!" Kyōraku Shunsui, having failed to recruit anyone, came over to complain to Sora. "I'm already so familiar with your disciples, yet not one of them is willing to come to my place."
Sora teased, "They're probably afraid that if they follow you, Captain Kyōraku, the division's paperwork will never get done."
Kyōraku scratched his face and sighed. "Oh my, how can you say that? I'm clearly a diligent and honest captain!"
His words made his vice-captain, who was standing beside him, roll his eyes.
The 8th Division vice-captain pushed up the glasses on his nose. "Heh. In that case, will the diligent and honest Captain Kyōraku please be sure to finish reading last week's documents today!"
"Ah, Lord Katori, I have something to discuss with you," Kyōraku said, pretending not to hear. He slung an arm around Sora's neck. "You've really stolen the show this time. Old man Yama wants me to bring you over."
Kyōraku whispered in Sora's ear, "Old man Yama wants to make you the captain of the 3rd Division."
Sora said with a sigh, "There's no rush to become a captain. I'm still teaching a class of students right now and don't wish to take on the role just yet."
Kyōraku gave him a surprised look. He was very surprised that Sora was unfazed by the prospect of becoming a captain.
The rank of captain was the pinnacle of power in the Gotei 13, granting access to resources that an ordinary Shinigami could not even compare to.
Yet, Katori Sora was now refusing such an opportunity.
Kyōraku chuckled lightly. "I feel like old man Yama won't agree so easily. He's had high expectations for you for a long time."
...
First Division, Sword Hall—
"This old man has heard that your strength has grown very quickly," Yamamoto Genryūsai Shigekuni said, taking off his captain's haori.
"I've improved a little, but I still need more time to polish my skills," Sora said pointedly.
After following Kyōraku to the 1st Division, he had been brought to the sword hall by this old man.
"Is that so... then let this old man see just how much you have grown!" Yamamoto took a wooden sword from a rack. His hand became a blur as he threw it fiercely at Sora.
In an instant, the wooden sword had reached him.
The wooden sword thrown by Yamamoto had actually surpassed the speed of sound.
Whoosh—
Sora steadily caught the wooden sword. Only then did the sound of it breaking the air reach his ears.
Sora's eye twitched. The old man's strength was too great. Just catching that had made the web of his hand go numb. If it had been a seated officer, their hand would probably have been broken!
"Very good!" Yamamoto showed a look of approval and took another wooden sword from the rack. "It seems you can let this old man stretch his bones a little."
Kyōraku Shunsui and Chōjirō Sasakibe also remained in the sword hall to watch.
Kyōraku touched one of the pillars and felt it was a bit rough. "Vice-Captain Sasakibe, I feel like your 1st Division's sword hall will need to be renovated again."
A rare smile appeared on Chōjirō's serious and stern face. "This sword hall is in disrepair. It has not been maintained for seventy-six years. If something were to happen to it, it would be a good opportunity to renovate it."
Katori Sora and Yamamoto walked to the center of the sword hall, poised to begin.
