Sora arrived at the 4th Division.
Just as he walked into the courtyard, he ran into Rii Hoshino.
When Sora saw her, she was sweeping the courtyard.
"Rii, is it your turn on duty today?" Sora asked with a light chuckle.
"Professor!" Rii Hoshino was surprised and delighted by his appearance.
"Is Captain Unohana here?" Sora asked. "I have some business with her."
"Are you here to see the Captain, Professor?" Rii shook her head. "But the Captain isn't here. She received a mission and has already left."
"A mission?" Sora noted the word Rii used and asked, "Do you know what happened?"
There weren't many missions that would require Unohana's personal intervention.
If a Shinigami in the Seireitei needed treatment, they usually came to the 4th Division. It was rare for Unohana to go out.
"I'm not sure either. The Captain didn't take anyone else with her. After Vice-Captain Sasakibe came to visit, she left with him," Rii Hoshino shook her head.
"Then I'll wait for her here at the 4th Division. It'll be a good chance to test what you've learned recently," Sora said gently.
"Huh?" Rii didn't expect a surprise inspection and panicked slightly.
...
After retiring, the 7th Division's Captain Takezuna Jigyō moved out of the Seireitei and returned to his hometown to recuperate.
Takezuna enjoyed peace and quiet. After returning home, few people disturbed him. Usually, only former members of the 7th Division would occasionally visit.
But today was very different. Takezuna's residence was surrounded by Shinigami, both inside and out.
When Kyōraku Shunsui saw Chōjirō Sasakibe arriving with Retsu Unohana, he hurried to greet them.
"Captain Unohana, you're finally here!"
Unohana said, "Has your intelligence squad found anything?"
"Still no sign of Captain Takezuna's whereabouts," Kyōraku shook his head, his voice grave. "The situation is not optimistic. If Captain Takezuna were still able to move, he shouldn't be completely missing. He's either trapped in some unknown place, or he has already... perished."
Today, the vice-captain of the 7th Division had come to visit Takezuna, only to find him missing. Only a pool of blood was found in the house, clearly indicating an accident had occurred.
The disappearance of a former captain was no small matter, and the 7th Division vice-captain immediately reported it.
However, Kyōraku and the intelligence squad could find no trace of Takezuna and had to ask other divisions for help.
"There are bloodstains in the house. Please come and take a look," Kyōraku said, leading Unohana to the evidence.
The blood was found in the bedroom. The bed had been stained red.
"A large amount of blood loss, but no signs of a struggle..." Unohana frowned.
Although Takezuna's strength had severely declined, he was not completely defenseless.
From the extent of the bloodstains and the surrounding furnishings, it seemed Takezuna had not put up a fight.
Unohana noticed a teacup on a nearby table. The cup was empty, but there were still some faint water stains.
She picked it up and sniffed it. Her expression quickly changed. "There's a residue of some kind of drug in the tea..."
She identified it carefully and continued, "My preliminary judgment is that it's a powerful anesthetic."
Kyōraku speculated, "So... Captain Takezuna was drugged first, and then attacked?"
"That's highly likely," Unohana nodded. "That would also explain why the bloodstains and other traces look like this. It seems Captain Takezuna did not fight back."
"But not just anyone could have drugged Captain Takezuna. He isn't that careless a person," Kyōraku frowned. "Could it be someone he knew?"
"It seems we'll have to start the investigation with Captain Takezuna's acquaintances," Kyōraku said, glancing at the 7th Division Shinigami. He continued, "I've had someone notify Captain Hikifune. She'll be here later with her people to check the residual spiritual pressure."
"By the way, Captain Unohana, is this drug easy to obtain?"
Unohana thought for a moment and said, "It's not common. There should only be three places to get it—the 4th Division, the 12th Division, and the Central Apothecary."
"Is that so... that narrows down the investigation considerably," Kyōraku said, stroking his chin as he fell into deep thought.
Not long after, Kirio Hikifune arrived with two subordinates in white lab coats.
"Kirio, I found drug residue in the cup. It was likely an inside job. Please help check the residual spiritual pressure in the room," Unohana said.
Kirio nodded and said to her two subordinates, "Kisuke, Hiyosu, you brought the equipment, right? Scan the room thoroughly."
"Yes, ma'am!" replied Kisuke Urahara and a man with a somewhat frog-like appearance.
The two took out their equipment and began scanning for residual spiritual pressure.
Kirio asked Kyōraku, "Has the intelligence squad found any trace of Captain Takezuna elsewhere?"
Kyōraku shook his head. "We've searched the vicinity, but found nothing. I'm afraid this incident was premeditated for a long time."
Urahara and Hiyosu used their instruments to collect the faint traces of spiritual pressure left in the room. These traces were too weak to be perceived by spiritual sense and required specialized equipment to detect.
Once detected, the spiritual pressure would be compared against the records in the spiritual pressure database. If the Shinigami's spiritual pressure was on record, the owner could be identified.
Hiyosu was responsible for checking the residual spiritual pressure on the bed. Just as he was about to collect a sample from the blood, he paused.
"Hiyosu, did you find something?" Urahara came over.
"No... I was just thinking, with this much blood loss, could Captain Takezuna already be..." Hiyosu said.
"He's most likely dead. They probably even cut off his head," Urahara said, analyzing the direction of the blood flow on the pillow and bed.
"Huh?" Urahara noticed something unusual. Amidst the bloodstains, there seemed to be some black marks, but they were obscured by the blood.
Urahara took out a solution and poured it on the bloodstains. Upon contact, the color of the blood quickly faded, revealing the marks underneath.
"Captain, we've found writing in the blood! It might be a message left by Captain Takezuna!" Urahara reported.
The others gathered around and saw a string of characters carved into the bed with spiritual pressure. It read—Tetsuya Asada.
Kyōraku's eyes narrowed. He turned to stare at the nearby vice-captain of the 7th Division. "Vice-Captain Asada, are you hiding something?"
Everyone else in the room also stared at the 7th Division vice-captain.
Because this newly appointed vice-captain's name was Tetsuya Asada!
He had previously been the 3rd seat of the 7th Division. After his older brother, Kōya Asada, died in the World of the Living, he was appointed vice-captain.
Just then, Hiyosu also reported, "Captain, I've detected Vice-Captain Asada's residual spiritual pressure on the teacup."
"It wasn't me!" Tetsuya Asada took several steps back, his voice trembling. "How could I possibly harm Captain Takezuna!"
