Kelly's POV
The morning after Reyes disappeared, the chaos and confusion had begun to settle, but I knew the day might not bode well for my peace. Councilor Reyes is an avid supporter of the Kael group; his stance among other regulators had been common.
Even with Adrian's absence, he bore us no ill will, but rather aided in the dismantling of The Veil's operations. I don't need to think further to know that his involvement is part of our psychic war, and the strain has made him vulnerable to attack.
To give more is to risk more.
I got to the Kael building and everywhere felt different; it was no longer loud with murmurs or so quiet. Like a room full of people pretending not to watch you bleed. I walked the corridors with my head up, stride even, the way you do when you know any sign of fracture will be used as proof.
My assistant met me outside the office. "The board wants an emergency session," she said. "Closed with no media."
"They want control," I replied.
