Chapter 43 - Chapter 043: The Dream-Eating Beast Baku

"Captain, come and see! There's a barrier here!"

The patrolling Konoha ninja quickly noticed a strange gray barrier covering the woods and reported it to their leader, Anko Mitarashi.

Anko froze for half a breath. She stopped chatting in the [Itsuki Harem Group Chat] and hurried to the site with her squad.

After examining the shimmering wall, she muttered darkly:

"This is an isolation barrier. It hides what's happening inside… Something unspeakable is going on in there."

Her eyes hardened. "Gather everyone. We'll break this barrier."

Though she suspected it could be a diversion, Anko's gut screamed this was urgent. She immediately signaled for reinforcements.

Soon, more patrol units arrived.

A Hyuga activated his Byakugan, scanning carefully.

"Captain, this is the Four Violet Flames Formation. Its cores are in the east, south, west, and north. Unless all four are destroyed at the same time, the barrier will hold."

Anko didn't hesitate. "One of you return to the village—report directly to the Hokage. Everyone else, split into four teams, find the cores, and await my signal."

"Yes, ma'am!"

Minutes later, her radio crackled with reports:

[South Team: Captain, we found the formation core—but it's trapped. Estimated time to break: at least half an hour.]

[West Team: Same here.]

[East Team: Same.]

[North Team: Here also.]

Anko pressed her fingers to her temples. "Sending more people won't speed it up?"

[Negative. Each trap must be disarmed by one shinobi. Extra hands won't help.]

Anko exhaled sharply. "Then begin cracking immediately. Everyone else, stay sharp—don't let anyone approach unnoticed."

"Yes!"

Her brows knit as she whispered to herself:

"According to Tenten and Karin, Itsuki was returning from Sasaki Castle. Could it be him inside? Someone set an ambush…"

"Grass Village? No… They don't have the guts. Then what? A spy from another village… or worse, someone from Konoha itself? Damn. Please don't let it be what I think."

Though she'd only heard of Itsuki through the group chat, Anko's curiosity had grown.

She had planned to meet him after her mission. She hadn't expected their paths to cross like this—under siege.

Whatever the case, Itsuki was a Konoha ninja. And Konoha protected its own.

Inside the barrier.

Danzo scrambled like a rat beneath the shadow of the wooden dragon.

His climb had been for nothing—he was slammed back down to earth.

The dragon coiled protectively beside Itsuki, but he didn't press the attack. He simply stood there, watching Danzo simmer in humiliation.

Danzo's jaw locked. Being toyed with by a mere boy—it was unbearable.

Behind him, the Root operatives who had already failed once were visibly straining to hold back laughter beneath their masks.

Mock me, will you?

"Since you don't know what's good for you, don't blame me for being ruthless!" Danzo spat, his single eye flashing.

He snapped hand seals. "Summoning Jutsu!"

A thunderclap of smoke burst across the battlefield.

Out of it lumbered a grotesque beast: an elephant's trunk, a cow's tail, a lion's body, tiger's claws. The Dream-Eating Beast Baku, devourer of dreams.

Danzo jabbed a finger forward. "Baku! Suck hard!"

The beast's maw opened wide.

A monstrous suction force ripped through the clearing, uprooting trees and dragging soil, stone, and splintered wood into its belly.

From its trunk it vented the excess air as white smoke, preventing itself from bursting.

The wooden giant staggered under the pull, its titanic frame dragging across the ground. Even Itsuki, hovering high above, lost his footing.

In an instant, he was pulled from the sky—straight toward the Dream-Eating Beast Baku's gaping jaws.

With Itsuki's chakra flow disrupted, the wooden man and dragon collapsed like puppets with cut strings, crashing down uselessly.

The Baku refocused, its pull intensifying around Itsuki's body.

Itsuki gritted his teeth. "Tch. No wonder even Sasuke's Susanoo struggled against this thing… The suction's insane."

Still, panic never crossed his face. If Sasuke could fight inside this pull, so can I. I'm not weaker than him.

Danzo, locked in focus, poured his chakra into the beast, magnifying its power.

His guards stepped forward, ready to strike as soon as Itsuki was helpless.

From being pulled to closing the distance, the whole process took mere seconds.

Itsuki was already within a hundred meters of the creature's jaws.

But suddenly—he stabilized. His right hand stretched outward.

"Wood Release: Cutting Technique!"

From his palm, a storm of sharpened wooden spears erupted.

A rain of jagged thorns filled the air, impossible for the Baku's mouth to swallow all at once.

Danzo's heart sank. He can still use ninjutsu under this pull?!

He and his guards had no choice but to retreat, abandoning the beast.

The Baku howled as the spears tore into its hide.

Worse still, those sucked inside its body detonated, sprouting into thorny branches that burst outward.

The nightmare spirit shrieked. Blood sprayed. Within moments, it was nothing but a grotesque pincushion. It collapsed, lifeless.

Itsuki landed lightly, dust swirling around him. His lips curled.

"A so-called spiritual beast… nothing but a circus trick."

Powerful suction, sure. But a single ninjutsu shoved down its throat, and it explodes.

Useless except against weaklings. And if it's just for weaklings… why summon it at all?

Still, a thought flickered. Maybe I should get a summon myself. Something that can fly…

But his musings ended there.

"Secret Technique: Insect Jade!"

"Sword Style: Gale Slash!"

Danzo's guards, already burning with fury, lunged the moment Itsuki's feet touched down.

They unleashed their deadliest attacks in tandem.

This time, they weren't holding back.
