Chapter 16 - (Chapter 16: The Trump Card)

The thick clouds almost completely blocked out the moonlight.

Several of the streetlights along the road were broken, and the trees on both sides stood like silent giants, their thick branches stretching wildly, clawing at the darkness.

A faint breeze rustled the leaves, adding to the eerie stillness, making the deserted street even more ominous.

A Dark night with rising wind — perfect for killing… and for feeding!

A man wearing a baseball cap, sunglasses, and a mask walked down the lonely street with his hands in his pockets. Suddenly, he stopped and turned to look toward the green belt on the right side of the road. Beyond it was a small park, with a grove of trees inside.

"Hiding in the grove, are you?"

Zhao Xuan stepped over the green belt and walked into the small forest.

"Such intense killing intent… and not just one of you!" His eyes sharpened. "Come out! We can all sense each other's presence — hiding is pointless!"

The moment he finished speaking, two figures emerged from the trees, one in front and one behind, trapping Zhao Xuan in between.

"I've heard that recently, some of our kind have been killed by their own. So you're the one who's been murdering your own kind, huh?"

"Don't waste your breath," the one behind sneered. "He's been following me for a long time — not even trying to hide his killing intent. It's definitely him!"

As soon as he spoke, the back one's head split open like petals, transforming into several powerful tentacles.

"How interesting," Zhao Xuan smiled faintly. "As I thought, this ability to sense each other is a double-edged sword. When you're tracking someone, you're also being sensed by them. So… you used some method to call for backup, didn't you? Hoping to ambush me with numbers?"

The one in front also split open, revealing bladed tentacles. "Still acting calm when you're about to die? We'll slice you into pieces right now, traitor!"

With that, both of them attacked simultaneously — tentacles whipping through the air toward Zhao Xuan.

Zhao Xuan's own head split open in response, several tentacles bursting out to clash midair, blocking their assault. At the same time, he darted sideways, trying to widen the distance and shift the fight into a triangular formation, so he wouldn't be attacked from behind.

"Pointless move!" sneered the parasite labeled 'A'. His tentacles whipped faster and faster.

Working together, the two parasites — A and B — unleashed seven or eight tentacles at once, weaving a deadly net of blades around Zhao Xuan.

Since he didn't know their names, Zhao Xuan simply referred to them as A and B.

He also understood what they meant: parasites, unlike humans, weren't limited to a 150-degree field of vision. Their bodies could transform freely — they could grow eyes and mouths anywhere. As long as they wanted, they could have 360-degree sight with no blind spots.

So to them, Zhao Xuan's maneuvering seemed unnecessary.

And indeed, their joint attack was overwhelming. Zhao Xuan's head tentacles alone couldn't block every strike; cuts began appearing all over his body. Fortunately, his speed was decent — most were just shallow wounds.

"Your strength is disappointing. How did you even manage to kill others of our kind?"

Parasite A sounded confused watching Zhao Xuan struggle.

Parasite B shouted, "Don't let your guard down! He's hiding something! Hey, kid, if you've got a trick up your sleeve, better use it now — or you're dead meat!"

He lunged, seizing an opening — slice! One of Zhao Xuan's tentacles was severed, a spray of red blood blooming like a flower in the dark.

"Damn it! Too careless!" Zhao Xuan gritted his teeth and turned to run.

"You're not getting away!"

Parasite A's tentacle shot out, impaling a nearby tree, and with a pull, he slingshotted himself forward like Spider-Man, landing directly in Zhao Xuan's path.

"This is your end!"

He lashed out again, and Parasite B attacked from behind at the same time.

Zhao Xuan swung his head tentacles desperately to block both, but missing two of them after being severed made defense even harder.

Moments later, another tentacle of his was cut off by B.

"Pathetic!"

"You've already lost two tentacles. Even if you regenerate them, you'll burn through massive amounts of energy and cells — your strength is already fading!"

Their combined assault intensified — front and back, relentless. Zhao Xuan's movements slowed; his breathing grew ragged.

"How boring," said A coldly. "Looks like we overestimated you. Those other parasites you killed must've been weaklings."

A's tentacles bound Zhao Xuan's remaining ones tightly. No matter how hard Zhao Xuan struggled, he couldn't break free.

"I'll finish this!" shouted B, raising his bladed tentacles for the killing blow.

But then, Zhao Xuan smirked. He suddenly raised his right hand, which split open into four powerful tentacles that shot straight toward B.

The surprise attack startled both enemies.

But only for a moment.

B reacted quickly, his head tentacles whipping up to block Zhao Xuan's attack, tangling with his right-hand tentacles.

"So that's your trump card, huh? I get it now — that's how you killed our kind before!"

"You must be really good at hiding your aura! We didn't even sense that another parasite was inside your body. That sneak attack might have worked on others…"

"But too bad for you — you met us! Tricks like that won't work here!"

The two of them sneered, clearly pleased with themselves.

Zhao Xuan looked at them calmly. "Sorry — that's not all I've got."

"Goodbye."

In the next instant, two fleshy lumps suddenly rose from behind Parasite A and Parasite B. In midair, they morphed into razor-sharp blades—

— and swung down.

"Huh?"

"What's happening?"

Both parasites' vision suddenly spun — and then they saw two headless bodies collapsing to the ground.

"We… were… beheaded…?"

"Damn… he… used… that… trick…"

In their fading sight, they saw the two fleshy lumps crawling quickly toward Zhao Xuan, leaping up, and merging back into his body.

"So… those were… the parts… he… cut off…"

Realization dawned too late. Their vision faded to black.

Zhao Xuan stood before their corpses and said coldly,

"You're wrong. They weren't cut off… I separated them on purpose."
