I walked back into the house carrying the gift, my heart pounding as I heard Soren's voice drifting from the living room. He was telling the elderly couple about our marriage.
He had waited until now to inform them because he knew they would object. He didn't want to create enemies of the Uriah and Mathews families unnecessarily. Most importantly, I was the woman he had chosen to marry.
The room went dead silent. I could feel the disbelief radiating from everyone present.
After all, Soren was exceptional in every way. How could someone like him possibly choose a woman like me?
The Zaid family owed me nothing. I had spent six years with Cobb, only to watch them cast me aside for an adopted daughter. If I caused a scandal now, it would bring nothing but shame to their family name.
But did I even possess the strength to fight back?
