Chapter 501: A Normal Marriage

The decision formed in Satsuki's mind and became impossible to put back.

She had been so consumed by the fear of being found out that laying everything bare felt like the only way to breathe again. Those pieces of evidence -- the ones she had been certain would stay hidden forever, that no one would ever find -- had become needles in her chest, and she could not sit still with them anymore.

The camera had already been discovered. But that was far from everything.

Naruto's old clothes, the ones she had quietly collected over the years, were still folded and kept somewhere only she knew about.

The faint traces of his presence that still clung to that fabric had gotten her through countless sleepless nights.

And then there were the photographs.

The ones she had taken in secret.

She had started from when they were still small -- from the first time she understood that her eyes could not leave that blond boy alone -- and she had never stopped. Naruto training. Naruto eating ramen. Naruto smiling while he talked to Iruka-sensei. Naruto taking a nap, completely unguarded.

Those photographs held a record of every age he had passed through. A document of his growth from an academy student into the person he was now -- someone who could hold an entire sky on his shoulders.

They were Satsuki's most treasured possessions. More precious to her than any ocular technique, any power she had ever cultivated.

And now all of it could become the evidence that cost her everything.

"If a husband needs to forgive his wife for liking him too much, then he's failing pretty significantly as a husband."

Naruto's words from a moment ago kept surfacing in her mind, one loop after another.

Naruto won't leave me.

That thought cut through the heaviness pressing down on her chest.

He had said those words. He was not the kind of person who turned and walked away because of something in his partner's past. He had never been that kind of person.

Everything she had done -- the secret collection of his old clothes, the covert photographs -- it all came from the same place. She loved him. She had loved him so completely, so far past the point of being manageable, that she could not bear the distance between them. She had needed to hold onto every piece of him she could reach.

Love had made her into this.

And Naruto would forgive her for it. She knew that now.

After the camera confession, Naruto had gone still. His gaze settled on the disassembled white cat on the desk.

That toy had kept him company for years. He had fallen asleep holding it. He had confided things to it. He had used it as a kind of comfort.

And now he knew. It had not only been a toy. It had been a surveillance device.

All those years he had believed he was alone -- there had been a pair of eyes watching him the entire time. Watching him sleep. Watching him drift. Watching him talk to a stuffed animal in an empty room.

Satsuki's eyes.

The kind of behavior he had only ever heard described in stories -- the fictional, unsettling kind -- was something that had actually happened. To him. In real life.

And the person responsible was the woman he loved.

"It's -- it's okay, I --" Naruto started.

His voice stumbled a little, but the meaning was perfectly clear. It's okay, I forgive you. Satsuki's eyes lit up instantly.

But she did not stop.

"No -- actually --" She cut across him before he could finish, the words already at her throat and moving on their own. "Even that wasn't enough for me."

"I..." Satsuki drew a slow breath, her voice not entirely steady. "I was secretly taking photographs of Naruto."

"I started a very long time ago."

"The way Naruto looked when he was training."

"The way he looked when he was eating."

"The way he looked smiling while he talked to someone."

"The way he looked when he fell asleep."

"And..." Her voice dropped lower, hotter. "The expression that came over his face when he thought no one was watching. That lonely look."

"Every one of those photographs -- I kept them."

"Every single one."

"And the old clothes." She pressed on, something close to fervent in her voice now. "The ones I told Naruto I would throw away -- I kept all of them. Every piece. I told him I had dealt with them, but I brought them all home with me."

"Because --"

She raised her head. Those black eyes looked straight at him, something burning in them without apology, without restraint -- a light made entirely of obsession.

"Because those clothes still had Naruto's presence on them."

"I wanted to feel his presence even when I was at home."

"I wanted to feel like he was nearby even when I couldn't see him."

"I wanted to fall asleep surrounded by the feeling of him."

"I wanted the first thing I felt when I woke up to be him."

"Those photographs, those clothes, that toy -- they were my treasures. The only things I could hold onto when he wasn't with me."

Her eyes had gone faintly red at the edges. "I know it was wrong. I know it's strange. I know anyone who heard this would think I was disturbed."

"But I couldn't stop."

"When Naruto wasn't there, I felt like something was missing."

"My breathing would go wrong."

"My heartbeat would go wrong."

"Everything would go wrong."

"Only when I looked at those photographs, when I breathed in that presence on those clothes -- only then could I make myself calm again."

She lowered her gaze. Her lashes cast thin shadows across her skin. "I'm sorry. I'm just... a person who is completely beyond saving."

"...Satsuki, I'm sorry."

Naruto spoke. And the words he said stopped her completely.

I'm sorry?

She looked at him, uncomprehending. She was the one who had done wrong -- those furtive, compulsive things, that consuming fixation, all that watching and collecting done in secret. Why was Naruto the one apologizing?

Naruto rubbed the back of his head. There was genuine embarrassment on his face. "Those things you did..." He chose his words with care. "You did them because you didn't feel safe. Did you."

Satsuki's lashes gave the faintest tremble.

"If I had noticed sooner that you were afraid." Naruto's voice carried the weight of someone turning something over on himself. "If I had held you more, stayed close more, made it clear sooner that you didn't need to use those things to feel certain of anything --"

"You wouldn't have had to do any of that."

"You... you don't think I'm frightening?" Satsuki's voice came out dry, not quite steady.

Naruto's words had exceeded even her most optimistic possibility.

He was blaming himself. He was telling her that what she had done was not monstrous -- it was the behavior of someone who had never been given enough security. That reframing made her legs feel unstable, like the thing holding her upright had been quietly removed.

Naruto smiled slightly. "Frightening?" he repeated softly. "You did all of that because you cared about me."

"I think it's adorable."

"The possessiveness and everything else -- none of that matters." Every word landed as though placed directly against her chest. "You are my wife. That is what matters most."

"I married you. All of you. Every part of you that you think of as a flaw -- I married that too."

"So --" Naruto raised his hand and let it rest gently on top of her head. "No more doing things in secret."

"I'm yours."

"Inside and out."

"Head to toe."

"All of it is yours."

His hand slipped from her hair and came up to cup her face, tilting it so that those eyes, bright with unshed tears, had nowhere to look but at him.

"Legitimately. And permanently."
