Chapter 243 - Chapter 244: Turning in the Test Early

As Director Verbinski put it, Luke's performance in this scene would definitely leave professional critics scratching their heads.

Acting without props is one of the most common yet incredibly vital ways to hone an actor's craft. It's all about mastering the art of bringing scenes to life through sheer skill and imagination.

Actors often practice everyday actions like opening a door, cleaning, cooking, driving, or eating. Nailing these daily-life scenarios requires a keen eye for detail, showcasing both expressiveness and creativity.

That kind of performance is undeniably a testament to acting talent.

Most actors can handle simple scenes, and pulling off something like eating an imaginary noodle is already considered impressive.

But Luke? He took it to a whole new level today by fighting an invisible sea monster.

And he did it so vividly, so convincingly, that it painted a crystal-clear picture in everyone's minds.

If you tried to say this scene didn't showcase acting chops, the audience would lose it. The technique was masterful, practically conjuring something out of nothing.

But calling it a god-tier, explosive performance? That feels a bit off too. After all, it's a fight scene, not the kind of deep, emotional character work traditionally seen as "acting."

The reason it's so hard to pin down is that Luke set a precedent. Nobody before him has pulled off a performance like this.

It's the result of his masterful spear skills combined with his "life-as-a-stage" approach—a one-of-a-kind achievement.

Back on set, after Turner (Luke's character) slashes through the Kraken's tentacle with a single shot, his face twists slightly as if dodging something. His eyes blink uncomfortably, like something's stuck in them, making it hard to see.

Director Verbinski immediately picks up on it. This is where they'll add a special effect of the tentacle's blood splashing onto Turner's face.

Luke perfectly captures the act of dodging the spraying blood and the sticky, uncomfortable feeling of it getting in his eyes.

"Cut!" the director calls out at just the right moment.

The crew steps in to smear fake blood on Luke's face. Not everything needs CGI—sometimes, physically applying blood for that stained effect is just easier.

"Action!" Filming resumes.

Turner lunges forward, hitting the ground in a roll to dodge a tentacle's swipe.

What's worth noting is how Luke, as he lands, subtly makes it look like his body is jolted upward, as if a massive tentacle really slammed the ground beside him.

With two consecutive rolls, Turner narrowly escapes the tentacle's attacks, looking utterly desperate and disheveled.

"Are you guys ready? I can't hold on much longer!" Turner roars.

"Almost there! Give us two more minutes!" Elizabeth shouts anxiously from the ship's cabin, urging the crew to hurry.

The camera zooms in for a close-up of Turner's face.

He grits his teeth, slings his spear across his back, and bolts toward the Black Pearl's mast.

"I hope playing hide-and-seek up high keeps that thing busy for a bit," Turner yells as he runs.

He grabs a rope, climbing it with lightning speed, reaching the top of the mainmast in just a few moves.

"I'm up here, you ugly freak!" Turner taunts, shouting down.

From his perch, he draws even more tentacles, all converging on him.

Tentacles surge from every direction, ready to crush him.

The top of the mast might be a death trap for anyone else, but for Turner, it's second nature.

He grabs another rope and swings out like Tarzan in the jungle, soaring toward the ship's rear mast.

"That was awesome! What a move!" Bob , standing nearby, can't help but slap his thigh in excitement.

But mid-swing, Turner suddenly lurches downward.

The enraged Kraken slams into the Black Pearl, tilting the ship a full 40 degrees.

Turner loses his balance, the rope swinging wildly through the air.

A massive tentacle coils toward him, and with no other choice, Turner lets go of the rope and leaps forward.

Thud!

He crashes onto the Black Pearl's massive sail, the sturdy fabric absorbing the impact of his jump.

Clinging to the sail, Turner slides down quickly, landing on the crossbar of the rear mast.

At 17 meters above the deck, it's not exactly high, but with the ship rocking back and forth from the tentacle's assault, it's a precarious spot.

Yet Turner miraculously keeps his balance, sprinting along the swaying mast, dodging one tentacle attack after another.

"We're ready! Get clear!" Elizabeth's voice finally rings out.

A massive net filled with barrels of gunpowder is hoisted into the air by the crew's desperate efforts.

Turner's spirits lift, and he picks up his pace.

Elizabeth raises her musket and fires.

Bang!

The ship lurches violently at that exact moment, and the shot misses.

The Kraken, in its fury, drags the Black Pearl back and forth, causing the gunpowder net to swing wildly in the air.

With the deck rocking nonstop, Elizabeth fires several more shots, all missing the mark.

Then a violent jolt sends Elizabeth flying, her gun skittering across the deck.

"Damn it!" she curses.

Turner's reached the end of the mast with nowhere left to run.

Suddenly, a hand picks up the fallen musket.

"It's Captain Jack! He's back!" the crew shouts in excitement.

"This is my ship, and I'm not giving it up!" Captain Jack declares, raising the musket and taking aim.

Bang!

A bullet flies, striking the swinging gunpowder barrels dead-on.

BOOM!

A massive explosion erupts, flames and shockwaves tearing through the Kraken's tentacles, setting them ablaze.

Wail!

A pained cry echoes from beneath the sea, the deep-sea beast overwhelmed by the searing pain.

The burning tentacles retreat back into the ocean.

"Cut!"

Director Verbinski wraps the scene, clearly thrilled.

"Luke, that was incredible. I thought your swordplay in action scenes was cool before, but seeing you with a spear? Now I get why you Chinese call it the king of weapons," Verbinski says.

"I like the spear too, but I won't be using it again in a movie anytime soon," Luke replies.

"I get it. You're trying to show off every weapon in the book," Bob chimes in.

Bob knows Luke's game plan: to cement himself in the audience's minds as a martial arts master by constantly reinventing his image.

Maybe next time, it'll be hand-to-hand combat?

With this scene in the can, Luke's indoor shots are done. It's like finishing a test early and turning it in ahead of schedule.

He gets to start his Christmas break early, while Depp, Anne, and the rest of the cast still have scenes left to shoot.
