Chapter 360: Gyaradosite
The ceremony officially concluded. Kenji stepped down from the podium, still happily clutching the massive gold trophy in his arms. It was heavy, both in literal weight and in the prestige it carried.
"Kenji."
He was about to head back to the lounge when a voice called out from behind. He turned to see Xun Zhurong walking toward him.
"Is there something you need?" Kenji asked, tilting his head.
Xun didn't say a word at first. Instead, he stopped directly in front of Kenji and performed a deep, formal ninety-degree bow.
Kenji was taken aback by the sudden display of humility. He took two quick steps back, blinking in surprise.
Xun straightened up, his expression serious. "I want to apologize. I was arrogant and hostile toward you for no reason. You are strong—Uncle Yun was right. I am truly no match for you."
Kenji realized Xun was here for a genuine reconciliation. He remembered feeling a similar way back in his old life—that annoying "perfect student" your mother always compared you to. He offered a shrug and a casual smile. "It's fine, really. No need to make a big deal out of it."
Xun let out a long breath. "For years, I lived in a bubble. Ever since I was chosen by Ho-Oh, my life was nothing but training, training, and more training. I was raised with a single goal: to replace my uncle as the Champion.
Actually, I have to thank you. Thank you for beating me. These last few days, I've had time to think. Once that singular goal was gone, my vision finally cleared. I've realized there's so much more to life than just a throne..."
Kenji watched as Xun started to get philosophical. Fearing his rival might decide to "retire" right then and there, Kenji coughed and cut in. "Hey, one win or loss doesn't define a career. I've always viewed you as my greatest rival."
He paused, then added with a smirk, "Don't you dare get knocked down once and then stay on the ground. I'm counting on you to take the seat from me in a few years so I can retire early."
Kenji was serious. He had no intention of being the Huaxia League Champion for decades. The responsibility was a heavy burden, and Kenji preferred a life of freedom and adventure over meetings and bureaucracy.
Xun blinked, then let out a light laugh. "You're something else. Don't worry, I'm not that fragile. I just meant I've learned to appreciate the journey. I'm not giving up on my goals."
Relieved, Kenji nodded. The two exchanged a few more words before parting on friendly terms.
Becoming the Huaxia League Grand Champion didn't just change Kenji's status—it granted him access to an astronomical level of resources.
First was the food. He now had a lifetime, unlimited supply of Special-Grade Pokéblocks. Every single one of his partners could now eat like royalty every day.
The happiest member of the team was undoubtedly Electivire. Its appetite was legendary, far exceeding its peers. Kenji sometimes wondered if it was a Snorlax in disguise. With a permanent buffet of Special-Grade food, the electric beast was in paradise.
Second, Kenji earned the right to visit the Imperial Breeding Center to select two S-Rank Potential Pokémon of his choice.
The value of an S-Rank Pokémon was immeasurable. Even the Elite Four were only granted two selections a year.
However, Kenji currently had eleven Pokémon, and with Serperior and Annihilape still growing, he didn't really want to add more members to his main roster just yet. He decided he would use the opportunity to pick out partners for Li Heng and Bai Bai later.
Finally, as the Champion, he was entitled to Special-Grade Treasures (Held Items) and a Mega Stone of his choice.
Among Kenji's team, besides Beedrill, both Gyarados and Tyranitar were capable of Mega Evolution.
Kenji had considered Tyranitar, but the Qi Clan held a near-monopoly on Tyranitarite. If he wanted one, he could likely get it from them through his connections. After some thought, he chose the stone for his sea serpent.
Gyarados had been with him since the beginning. It was his second partner, the one who had stayed by his side from the days he was a broke student struggling to afford basic medicine. Their bond was deep and unshakable.
The League worked fast. A small, velvet-lined box was delivered to his room that evening. Inside lay a gemstone with a swirling red-and-blue core: the Gyaradosite.
With this, Gyarados's power would reach a whole new level.
In professional battles, a trainer is typically limited to one Mega Evolution per match due to the immense mental strain and the "cooldown" required for the stones.
Normally, a trainer would always choose to Mega Evolve their strongest Ace. But for Kenji, Beedrill was already so strong it didn't need Mega Evolution for 99% of its matches. Against anyone but the absolute top-tier masters like Grandma Liu or Zhurong Yun, Kenji could now give the Mega slot to Gyarados, making his team even more versatile and terrifying.
