Chapter 264: Mankey on the Verge of Evolution

Cybernetic Growth!!

Kenji looked at the effect description of the [Cybernetic Growth] Hex Core and was secretly astonished.

The trigger condition was having no unused equipped items in his inventory.

The effect was a 15% increase in growth rate for all his Pokémon.

And every single one of his Pokémon would benefit from it!!

This was somewhat terrifying.

His Pokémon already had monstrous growth rates. Adding another 15% on top of that...

As for the trigger condition, it was trivial for Kenji. He could just sell any spare items and buy new ones from the shop whenever needed.

Kenji wasn't short on gold anymore. While he couldn't afford to instantly create a 4-Star Arceus with Champion Duplicators yet, upgrading all his Pokémon's gear to Radiant Items was well within his means.

The only reason he hadn't done so was that his current equipment was sufficient.

However, before the Huaxia League Conference, Kenji planned to upgrade everyone's gear to maximize their power.

He was very satisfied with this new Gold Hex Core.

For the next few days, Kenji stayed in Green City.

He trained his Pokémon, enjoyed the city's scenery, and refreshed the Trade Sector's Egg Shop daily.

Unfortunately, after several days of rerolling, the highest potential he found was A-Rank.

Kenji wasn't in a hurry.

He currently had ten Pokémon in his possession.

Even excluding Tyranitar, who was temporarily away, he still had nine active team members.

Beedrill was improving steadily. The others had found their own training rhythms and didn't require much micromanagement.

So, Kenji focused most of his attention on Servine and Mankey.

Perhaps because they were both serpentine, Arbok was very friendly toward Servine. Also, Arbok seemed to miss having Tyranitar as a younger brother to boss around, so it took Servine under its wing, leading it in training every day.

Servine, having been ostracized by its clan since childhood, cherished its new friends deeply and trained exceptionally hard.

Kenji only needed to design a training plan, and Servine would follow it diligently. It was very low-maintenance.

Mankey, on the other hand, was a massive headache.

Kenji could command Mankey effectively in battle; the monkey respected him as the trainer who defeated it.

But outside of battle, Mankey was a true hooligan. It resisted structured training plans fiercely.

Training was repetitive and boring.

And Mankey couldn't sit still. It had zero patience for dull, repetitive drills.

However, despite its lack of enthusiasm for drills, Mankey's level rose quickly.

Through observation, Kenji realized Mankey was a combat pragmatist.

It hated drills but loved "battling"—or more accurately, brawling.

Training through combat was the path for Mankey.

After resting for two days, Kenji finalized his travel plans.

Saibei Province bordered the Western Regions (Xinjiang). Kenji planned to cross Saibei and challenge the Western Region Gym for his seventh badge.

Plus, the Western Region Gym Leader was Xie Mu's uncle.

But before leaving, Kenji headed to the Green City Gym (the municipal one, not the provincial Saibei Gym).

Green City had two gyms: the municipal Green City Gym and the provincial Saibei Gym.

Strictly speaking, every city that housed a Provincial Gym also had a municipal one.

Challenging a municipal gym and getting a city badge wasn't very useful for Kenji's main goal.

But he wasn't there for the badge. Mankey had just reached Level 28.

Kenji wanted to use a battle to push Mankey over the edge and evolve it into Primeape.

Kenji arrived at the Green City Gym wearing sunglasses and a black baseball cap, intending to keep a low profile.

The Gym Leader was Bartel (Ba-te-er), a Fighting-type specialist.

Compared to the Saibei Gym, the Green City Gym was much smaller.

But it was still the gym of a provincial capital, far stronger than the Lincheng Gym back home.

To increase the difficulty for Mankey, Kenji intentionally equipped it with only one item: Bloodthirster.

The process was the same as any gym challenge.

After confirming his appointment, Kenji was led to a waiting room.

There were more challengers here than at the Saibei Gym, mostly young trainers in their twenties.

After waiting for about an hour, it was finally Kenji's turn.

He stood up, pulled his cap lower, and walked into the arena.

On the other side of the field stood a burly man—Gym Leader Bartel.

Bartel didn't pay much attention to Kenji, clearly not recognizing him. He treated Kenji like any ordinary challenger.

Kenji took his place. The referee raised a green flag.

Both trainers threw their Poké Balls simultaneously.

"Go!! Mankey!!"

"Go!! Throh!!!"
