It hated drills but loved "battling"—or more accurately, brawling.
Training through combat was the path for Mankey.
After resting for two days, Kenji finalized his travel plans.
Saibei Province bordered the Western Regions (Xinjiang). Kenji planned to cross Saibei and challenge the Western Region Gym for his seventh badge.
Plus, the Western Region Gym Leader was Xie Mu's uncle.
But before leaving, Kenji headed to the Green City Gym (the municipal one, not the provincial Saibei Gym).
Green City had two gyms: the municipal Green City Gym and the provincial Saibei Gym.
Strictly speaking, every city that housed a Provincial Gym also had a municipal one.
Challenging a municipal gym and getting a city badge wasn't very useful for Kenji's main goal.
But he wasn't there for the badge. Mankey had just reached Level 28.
Kenji wanted to use a battle to push Mankey over the edge and evolve it into Primeape.
Kenji arrived at the Green City Gym wearing sunglasses and a black baseball cap, intending to keep a low profile.
The Gym Leader was Bartel (Ba-te-er), a Fighting-type specialist.
Compared to the Saibei Gym, the Green City Gym was much smaller.
But it was still the gym of a provincial capital, far stronger than the Lincheng Gym back home.
To increase the difficulty for Mankey, Kenji intentionally equipped it with only one item: Bloodthirster.
The process was the same as any gym challenge.
After confirming his appointment, Kenji was led to a waiting room.
There were more challengers here than at the Saibei Gym, mostly young trainers in their twenties.
After waiting for about an hour, it was finally Kenji's turn.
He stood up, pulled his cap lower, and walked into the arena.
On the other side of the field stood a burly man—Gym Leader Bartel.
Bartel didn't pay much attention to Kenji, clearly not recognizing him. He treated Kenji like any ordinary challenger.
Kenji took his place. The referee raised a green flag.
Both trainers threw their Poké Balls simultaneously.
